If you look closely before the girl gets hit you can see his friend is telling the guy who hits her she is coming. The guy who hits her also glances over his shoulder just before he smacks her and while this was happening the boxer had his eye on them both, he saw the whole thing transpire.which is why he reacted so quickly and violently.
