annoying that the upright bass isn't synchronized with the studio recording; the 'clicks'. anyhow, phoenix did an outstanding job capturing this legend.
I think the oscars need a revamp, a re-think if they can pass this man by for an oscar for this performance. The oscars have gone from being a celebration of acting to a jealousy guarded trophy given out by "experts" who actually think artsy fartsy movies from sundance are more meaningful than genre defining movies like the good the bad and the ugly. I like how the common moviegoers are not taken into consideration. We are only good to make money out of but our opinions are unwanted.

I think the movie was just superb but it left many things out from Johnny's real life. Like his suicide attempt at the Nicajack cave in 1968, or the crazy things he did when on drugs. Did you know that Johnny and the tennesse three checked into a hotel once where they got separated rooms. Johnny wanted a door between the rooms, but since there was no door there Johnny took a fireaxe and "made" a door in the wall! Nonetheless, movie was great and so was Joaquin Phoenix!
Thank you for posting this... my day wasn't going so well, but I think that maybe you just turned that around for me. I'm definitely not one of those 8 people that the previous two commenters just mentioned.
@reptile1104 why the hell is that in ignorant thing to say? they've obviously heard both versions of the song and are making an informed opinion. people like you who just use words like 'ignorant' so flippantly really annoy me, as do the 3 idiots who liked the comment. i don't even understand where you were coming from with that comment and and i don't think you'd be able to tell me. for the record i completely agree with tessvock, very rarely does a cover excel the original but this is amazing.
@tessvock not really, it's your opinion. better in the context your using is opinionated. The legend Johnny Cash wrote this song and is the original man in black, give respect where it's due
@reptile1104 im just saying i think this song he nailed, respect is given to the original man in black from me. and how can you say its ignorant when i have heard both and actually grew up listening to johnny cash??
When Joaquin said "Hi I'm Johnny Cash" it didn't really sound too much like but his singin' ain't bad. It's hard to be Johnny Cash unless you're the man in black.
It's not a snare drum at all. Johnny Cash only had bass and electric guitar from Grant and Perkins so to get the sound of the snare drum, he used a piece of paper woven through his acoustic guitar strings to deaden them. Then picked up high on the neck to give the scratching sound.
Watch "Johnny Cash Live at Montreaux" And then watch "Walk the Line" where this song is played. you'll see it.
@kreggerya ....true to the original Tennessee Two....Johnny Cash, Marshall Grant and Luther Perkins...there is no snare drum....Fluke Holland didn't join Cash until 2 years later in 1958.
@bleckySD I couldn't agree more. Joaquin definitely deserved something from Walk The Line. It was so brilliant. Right after i watched it on rental, i got the VCD.
Yes, he sings worse than Cash in most of the film, but he still sings great and I think that he could be great singer with big succes, BUT he is also great actor. Absolutely amazing job heve done in this film, same as in Gladiator or Signs. I have so much respect for human being with so much talent.
The guitar looks a little big for Joaquin, as he's only 5'8 when the real Johnny Cash was 6'2! Truly a big man.. but Joaquin played Johnny so well no one notice! ;)
Whats funny with this whole scene is that everyone talk about Joaquin and Johnny, but no one have noticed that Dan John Miller is spot on like Luther Perkins. The same eye contact with Joaquin like Luther had with Johnny after the guitar solo!

To enigmaE5: I think they had Electric guitars ,,,The band began in the mid-1950s as The Tennessee Two, consisting of Luther Perkins used to use a an electric guitar and Marshall Grant on upright bass.
Yes, your right me and my son started taking guitar lessons and, i did a little outside research, the electric was invented in 1931, I guess learning either one (acoustic, or electric) is quite the same, Thanks For your input, because a lot of people really don't know.....just takes a a little research. Thanks a lot though....
Hi I am from India ...I never who was Johnny Cash but the day I saw "walk the line" some two years back I am a fan of his...I have purchased all the original tracks of Cash and not a single day passes when I don't hear him...and Jaqquen and Reisse were just mind blowing in the movie...I liked the way he introduced him self "Hello, I am johnny Cash" the most simplest and effective introduction ever I guess...Long live Cash!!!
is that an electic guitar in the solo, because I thought at that time their weren't Electric guitars, I thought he knew how to play higher or changed the strings????
To enigmaE5 Yes that is an electric guitar I am not sure but I believe it to be a Fender or a Stratacaster. Many of those early electrics are now collectors' items. Worth a ton of money.
The Esquire came a very shortly (a few months) before the Telecaster in 1950. The Esquire only had one pickup in the bridge but the Tele, which was then called the Broadcaster, came out and had a neck and bridge pickup. I think Luther played mostly the Esquire until the later part of the 50's when Tele's became more popular and easier to find.

It took JP a long time he said to get his voice that low, a lot of work from a voice coach, one day he said he just became Johnny Cash. Great actor, too bad he's gone crazy.
yea joaquin has a good low kinda low voice like johnny but its not as rough and sounds better the way its sung live here, and probably at least on power with the origional recording
Yes because me and my son couldn't stand country and it took joaquin too change that, he's a great singer , actor all that, LOVE him, now ... i already liked him from making me hate him so much in Gladiator but this, this is too much... he's amazing. I hate too say this but i his cover is better than Cash's itself. Reese as well she didn't want the part because she didn't know how too sing she's amazing as well.

They are just raised in a diffrent enviorment that isnt near as good as the ones we were raises in. Just saying thats a fact. People no matter the race or gender act the way they act from the way they are raised, the enviorment there raised in, and what people try and get them to beileve. 95% of the time.

To enigmaE5: I think they had Electric guitars ,,,The band began in the mid-1950s as The Tennessee Two, consisting of Luther Perkins used to use a an electric guitar and Marshall Grant on upright bass.
Jay78bhupats 2 years ago

To enigmaE5 Yes that is an electric guitar I am not sure but I believe it to be a Fender or a Stratacaster. Many of those early electrics are now collectors' items. Worth a ton of money.

is a white fender telecaster
borntokill30 2 years ago
@tomanderson92 johnny cash's guitarist, Luther Perkins played a Fender Esquire. it was like a telecaster but didn't have a neck pickup.

@tdcollector
+1
The Esquire came a very shortly (a few months) before the Telecaster in 1950. The Esquire only had one pickup in the bridge but the Tele, which was then called the Broadcaster, came out and had a neck and bridge pickup. I think Luther played mostly the Esquire until the later part of the 50's when Tele's became more popular and easier to find.

Do rytmu mi boty hadrem pucoval.
Když přestal, z čela stíral pot,
říkám mu: "Ty leštíš jako o závod."
A on prej, že to dělá rád,
