  • if resurrection was possible in 2012 i'd bring johnny cash back to life

  • I LOvE you

    JOAQUIN!!!!!!

  • One of my most favorite songs! Has such a great beat (rhythm)!!

  • The great Luther Perkins!

  • annoying that the upright bass isn't synchronized with the studio recording; the 'clicks'. anyhow, phoenix did an outstanding job capturing this legend.

  • I think the oscars need a revamp, a re-think if they can pass this man by for an oscar for this performance. The oscars have gone from being a celebration of acting to a jealousy guarded trophy given out by "experts" who actually think artsy fartsy movies from sundance are more meaningful than genre defining movies like the good the bad and the ugly. I like how the common moviegoers are not taken into consideration. We are only good to make money out of but our opinions are unwanted.

  • amazing <3

  • Hey,

    Awesome vid. Peace

    -MW

  • I'll never understand why JP didn't get the Oscar for this picture., You were aewsome. You got Fu@fed by not getting the Oscar. You should have had it my frriend. Best acting I have saw in years...

  • The guitarist at 2:14 looks bored!

  • @horsey05 not bored just in zone most guitarists back then were just mellow... it was the singer the frontman who was all nuts and over the place

  • Damn, why did i born in to a wrong timeline...

  • @Elaizz You'd probably still be considered illiterate back then.

  • @AlphaGinga Oh, so you're funny guy huh? :)

  • @Elaizz Thanks!

  • joaquin should have released a tribute album

  • @MrLennon1000 the movie had an album though

  • @MrLennon1000 He did. It's the movie soundtrack.

  • @MrLennon1000 Check out the Official Soundtrack to the movie.

  • Pheonix has Johnny's nervousness down to a tea

  • Hello, Im Johnny Cash. (CLAPS) LOL what a legend

  • rock 'n' roll old school in a movie? fuck this is great

  • song starts at 1:10 if anyone was wondering ;)

  • this scene is so cool. you can totally tell that this was recorded live at 3:00 when he starts playing the guitar again after he stopped playing

  • you feally cant help but catch your feet tapping in tune with this song. I SWEAR!!!!

  • Joaquin Phoenix is fucking awesome in this role. amazing

  • I think the movie was just superb but it left many things out from Johnny's real life. Like his suicide attempt at the Nicajack cave in 1968, or the crazy things he did when on drugs. Did you know that Johnny and the tennesse three checked into a hotel once where they got separated rooms. Johnny wanted a door between the rooms, but since there was no door there Johnny took a fireaxe and "made" a door in the wall! Nonetheless, movie was great and so was Joaquin Phoenix!

  • Such An AMAZING Actor And So Good Looking!!!

  • Thank you for posting this... my day wasn't going so well, but I think that maybe you just turned that around for me. I'm definitely not one of those 8 people that the previous two commenters just mentioned.

  • 8 people are deaf.

  • 8 people need to sort themselves out!!

  • ...WHAT THE HELL DID THEY PUT IN THE WATER AT NASHVILLE???-HOW THE HELL CAN YOU CALL IT "COUNTRY MUSIC" TODAY...AFTER LISTENING TO THIS??

  • That guy playing bass-viol looks a bit like payon manning :)))

  • He is amazing, this version is better than Cash originally. He also looks so sexy

  • @tessvock that's a very ignorant thing to say.

  • @reptile1104 but its the truth, sorry buddy

  • @reptile1104 why the hell is that in ignorant thing to say? they've obviously heard both versions of the song and are making an informed opinion. people like you who just use words like 'ignorant' so flippantly really annoy me, as do the 3 idiots who liked the comment. i don't even understand where you were coming from with that comment and and i don't think you'd be able to tell me. for the record i completely agree with tessvock, very rarely does a cover excel the original but this is amazing.

  • @tessvock not really, it's your opinion. better in the context your using is opinionated. The legend Johnny Cash wrote this song and is the original man in black, give respect where it's due

  • @reptile1104 im just saying i think this song he nailed, respect is given to the original man in black from me. and how can you say its ignorant when i have heard both and actually grew up listening to johnny cash??

  • He is HOT

  • I think this is the best number he does in the movie. Kudo's!!!

  • When Joaquin said "Hi I'm Johnny Cash" it didn't really sound too much like but his singin' ain't bad. It's hard to be Johnny Cash unless you're the man in black.

  • It's not a snare drum at all. Johnny Cash only had bass and electric guitar from Grant and Perkins so to get the sound of the snare drum, he used a piece of paper woven through his acoustic guitar strings to deaden them. Then picked up high on the neck to give the scratching sound.

Watch "Johnny Cash Live at Montreaux" And then watch "Walk the Line" where this song is played. you'll see it.

  • The guy who played the part of Luther Perkins looks almost exactly like Luther himself and is one HELL of a guitar picker!

  • Where the hell is the snare player in this shot?

  • @kreggerya

Good question. The wind took him?

  • @kreggerya ....true to the original Tennessee Two....Johnny Cash, Marshall Grant and Luther Perkins...there is no snare drum....Fluke Holland didn't join Cash until 2 years later in 1958.

  • @MultiBaldEagle Why do I hear one in this recording lol? Bass slaps aren't that intense.

  • HELLO...I'M JOHNNY CASH!!!

  • "see the difference purina makes" XD

  • Reese was good and got an oscar. BUT JOAQUIN WAS BRILLIANT and didn't get anything.... welcome to the "fair" world of judging in hollywood...

  • @bleckySD I couldn't agree more. Joaquin definitely deserved something from Walk The Line. It was so brilliant. Right after i watched it on rental, i got the VCD.

  • he did wonderful! as a cousin of the actual Johnny Cash he did a great job!

  • They Couldn't Have Picked A Better Person To Play Johnny Cash <3

    I Love Joaquin Phoenix :D

  • trop fort ce Joaquin ! J'adore !

  • Yes, he sings worse than Cash in most of the film, but he still sings great and I think that he could be great singer with big succes, BUT he is also great actor. Absolutely amazing job heve done in this film, same as in Gladiator or Signs. I have so much respect for human being with so much talent.

  • at 2:18 he looks. . .well. . . HA!

  • ha ha , this is nearly as good as johnny himself, get rythem

  • one of my fav movies

  • The guitar looks a little big for Joaquin, as he's only 5'8 when the real Johnny Cash was 6'2! Truly a big man.. but Joaquin played Johnny so well no one notice! ;)

  • @Spyflugan91 i thought joaquin was at least 6 feet tall lol

  • 3:09 look at the guitar??

  • Joaquin has more talent in his pinky finger than I could ever hope to have!

  • Joaquin is brilliant in this movie...Oscar performance!

  • Joaquin is brilliant in this movie...Oscar performance!

  • why is joaquin wearing white johnny never wore anyhting else than black for concert's

  • @CTFxcisforhaters1 in fact he wore white in the early days.

  • @CTFxcisforhaters1 later in his carer yes but in the origanal film of jhonny cash he had a white jacket on i think

  • is that picture at 0:54 joaquin or johnny

  • @CTFxcisforhaters1 its Joaquin

  • @yelloduckie05 what

  • theres some epic coolnes about the way he sings at 3:00

  • @SWalter123456789 that's what i was thinking

  • Catholics do it with rhythm.

  • Thank you, thank you. Great ♪ ♫ song ♫ ♪ ..

  • He does sing it better than Johnny.

  • "Thank you, thank you very much"

    Wasn't that Elvis's thing?

  • @paintballing489 he and Elvis were buddies.

  • Good lord! He wasn't dress in black at the time!!! :o ;)

  • *quietly* "hello, im johnny cash." I love that!

  • Joaquin should of won an oscar for this. Astounding the way he imitates the legend that is the Cash.

  • I grew up with Cash, and Joaquin did a fantastic job of portraying him!

  • @Jany1954 did you really!? lucky!!

  • LOVE this old song! And it really does work. ( :

  • i dont get why joaquin went crazy ... kinda sucks

  • @Skiingisdabom

probably went crazy cuz he got robbed of the oscar!

  • @Skiingisdabom not really crazy, apparently it was all an act for a film.

  • @LeafMonkey59 wasn't it suppose to be because he was making a movie about how rap music affected his life or something weird like that?

  • @Skiingisdabom yeah but he did the whole act so that people would believe the film when it was a mockumentary.

  • @Skiingisdabom he didn't. it was ALL an act.

  • @Skiingisdabom he didnt fool it was a role for amovie

  • johnny cash is the king . not elvis

  • how did he not win an oscar??

  • Great movie and he does a amazing job of recreating cash. if only J.R. could have lived long enough to see this. hed be proud.

  • Whats funny with this whole scene is that everyone talk about Joaquin and Johnny, but no one have noticed that Dan John Miller is spot on like Luther Perkins. The same eye contact with Joaquin like Luther had with Johnny after the guitar solo!

  • give the man an oscar!!

  • nice he played a martin

  • stunning

  • he sings it better than cash (thats hard to say) but every other song on the film hes worse than cash

  • @jordyboy321

how can he sing johnny cash's songs better than johnny cash? lol

    thumbs down on you sir

  • Funny,Iam from N.Y.C.grew up in the age of great (not polyester thank God)disco/funk/and R&B,but I like country too.I've been in N.C.now for 6 years and everytime I go to the local watering hole every guy in the place gives me money for the incredibly great jukebox after hearing such a wide variety of great songs I play for myself at first. They wan't to convert me to the Baptist faith even!(HAHA)Iam a Roman Catholic.I love it here and the music I was taught by mom was a huge variety.Taught well.

  • im getting "get rhythm, when you get the blues" tattooed on my wrist for my birthday in a few weeks... love jonny cash, and walk the line is an amazing movie!!

  • @emmyloulou100 and what will it look like when you are 80?

  • Great song, but it would have been nice if Joaquin could have gotten real low on that one verse, ya know?

  • @smsw1516

    Yes, that's true..

"I said you're a mighty little boy to be workin' that way."

    But it's very great indeed!

  • @QteeBlack.......nothing more to say

  • Did he do one HELL of a job portraying Luther Perkins or WHAT! The facial expression....NONE. Just like Luther! And not to mention he's one HELL of a picker

  • @MultiBaldEagle luther perkins?

  • @druglover200 .....Surely you know who I'm talking about. Luther Perkins was Johnny Cash's original guitar player in The Tennessee Two. He died in a house fire in 1968. And the guy in the movie who portrayed him could've passed for Luther. He looked so much like him it was scary.

  • WOO!

  • i rlly like this song but i rlly like the intro unlike the real song which is right to the verse. but no offense the original is always gonna be great. u kno?

  • one my faves of johnny cash! :D

  • adore this song.. (:

  • Joaquin Phoenix is HOT!!!

  • @antichrist12 youre hot

  • Would love to have that Esquire :)

  • @thinlinefan Did he do a hell of a job playing the part of Luther Perkins, or WHAT???? He just stood there expressionless, just like Luther

  • "hello, i'm johnny cash" i love that :)

  • Joaquin Phoenix plays Johnny REALLY REALLY well, thumbs up!

  • @anneforscrew you mean ex-actor. But i agree he was great

  • @anneforscrew 100

  • @anneforscrew Ladder 49 made me like him, Walk The Line made me LOVE HIM.

  • When I was younger, I was having a rough time in 5th and 6th grade, but when I saw this movie it was one of the most inspirational movies I had ever seen. Right after seeing this movie I got really into music especially these songs by Johnny Cash. This old school music got me through rough times and some old school movies too.

  • I think Joaquin plays Johnny Cash pretty good but no one can replace "THEE" CASH!!!

  • 1:01 - 1:04 sooo funny

  • I like how the bass player gets into it

  • This song makes me SOO happy LOL. I Love it. and I love Joaquin's voice

  • like they said, elvis didn't want the song get rhythm.. thats so fuckin lucky actually, can u all imagine how that would sound? :s haha, im glad that john did this good piece! :)

  • good song

  • Is this Argue Tube or You Tube? It may be an American site but everyone of every nationality are welcome to post comments, Yanks included!

  • To Hoboscouts: First of all you are an ignorant fool generally I don't reply to shit holes like you, but let me clarify u some thing....This is You tube is global site and American only, this topic may be american but I know more than you...so u should be ashamed of that...secondly Indian's do not bomb any one but are victims of terror...and don't ever say any thing about my Mom or else I will change my words...

  • I am not talking about native americans. I am talking about the ones from the middle east who come over here and skip out on there taxes.

  • Can't believe this was for Elvis!! It wouldn't have been the same. Thank heaves for JC!!

  • To enigmaE5: I think they had Electric guitars ,,,The band began in the mid-1950s as The Tennessee Two, consisting of Luther Perkins used to use a an electric guitar and Marshall Grant on upright bass.

  • Yes, your right me and my son started taking guitar lessons and, i did a little outside research, the electric was invented in 1931, I guess learning either one (acoustic, or electric) is quite the same, Thanks For your input, because a lot of people really don't know.....just takes a a little research. Thanks a lot though....

  • Hi I am from India ...I never who was Johnny Cash but the day I saw "walk the line" some two years back I am a fan of his...I have purchased all the original tracks of Cash and not a single day passes when I don't hear him...and Jaqquen and Reisse were just mind blowing in the movie...I liked the way he introduced him self "Hello, I am johnny Cash" the most simplest and effective introduction ever I guess...Long live Cash!!!

  • Hoboscouts, shut the fuck up.

i'm not idian, but honestly... grow up..

how about just listening to the song and keeping whatever opinions you have to yourself..? thanks.

  • Hoboscouts you're an embarassment to the USA. If it weren't for people like you we could have a chance at positive foriegn relations.

    P.S. You're a douche

  • is that an electic guitar in the solo, because I thought at that time their weren't Electric guitars, I thought he knew how to play higher or changed the strings????

  • Get Rhythm is a Rockabilly song

  • lol, yea your right, still like some of the country tracks in the movie, " That's alright mama" the best....

  • To enigmaE5 Yes that is an electric guitar I am not sure but I believe it to be a Fender or a Stratacaster. Many of those early electrics are now collectors' items. Worth a ton of money.

  • is a white fender telecaster

  • @tomanderson92 johnny cash's guitarist, Luther Perkins played a Fender Esquire. it was like a telecaster but didn't have a neck pickup.

  • @tdcollector

    +1

The Esquire came a very shortly (a few months) before the Telecaster in 1950. The Esquire only had one pickup in the bridge but the Tele, which was then called the Broadcaster, came out and had a neck and bridge pickup. I think Luther played mostly the Esquire until the later part of the 50's when Tele's became more popular and easier to find.

  • @batbag12 Luther also at one point in time switch to a Mustang i believe. it may have been a Jaguar. I can't remember

  • @tdcollector I think he used both in the 60's.

  • Damn Donnie Anderson really does play Johnny Cash--It is the rage of Tyler Texas all the way to Chickenbutt,Texas

  • It took JP a long time he said to get his voice that low, a lot of work from a voice coach, one day he said he just became Johnny Cash. Great actor, too bad he's gone crazy.

  • Johnny cash is the original, but Joaquin phoenix is a fair singer too. :]

  • Testing... 1:32

  • love this SONG. love this MOVIE. love this ACTOR. love itttt !!! :)

  • yea joaquin has a good low kinda low voice like johnny but its not as rough and sounds better the way its sung live here, and probably at least on power with the origional recording

  • Yes because me and my son couldn't stand country and it took joaquin too change that, he's a great singer , actor all that, LOVE him, now ... i already liked him from making me hate him so much in Gladiator but this, this is too much... he's amazing. I hate too say this but i his cover is better than Cash's itself. Reese as well she didn't want the part because she didn't know how too sing she's amazing as well.
