The main reason why people would not figure out the solution is that we are not shown there is water. Simple.

The first solution i thought when the problem was presented to me was to blow very hard and fast down the pipe to cause the peanut to rise due to pressure. I then thought that if water was present I'd fill the pipe.

I don't see how any other human couldn't solve this puzzle immediately.

If an incredibly advanced alien were to design a trick/problem comparable to what we designed for this chimp, & ask us to solve it, I doubt very much most of us would be able to do it. Actually that was the way he was supposed to get the nut. Its part of a series of tests on problem solving in humans and monkeys. But one monkey really was smarter than the scientists, he was much quicker than everybody else. He just pissed in the tube, problem solved ^^ I laughed tears when i saw that as part of a documentary.
