What about the farms overseas where the feed stock is purchased from? Those aren't overseas jobs? What about the overseas production facilities owned by American companies? It's not all don't "in house" on our shores with our people.
Ethanol is also traded as heavily as oil is between all the same countries and companies that trade oil. The ethanol you have in your car may have been produced in Saudi Arabia (from rice) or Brazil (sugar cane).
American companies now produce billions of gallons of ethanol from grain. It's used to supplement gasoline and reduce the need for foreign oil. But a new study suggests that a much more efficient way to use plant material for transportation would be to burn it to generate electricity, and use that power to charge electric cars. NPR's Richard Harris reports.
@MorgTheHarbinger You have an interesting view, Morg. But remember, our gasoline based economy is ripe right now for an injection of ethanol. Electric cars are one solution, and you may be ready to buy an electric car today. But what about your neighbor, and your co-worker and your friends? That might take a little longer. Ethanol is here today and we can move away from depending on foreign sources of oil and keep that money here in the good ol'e U.S. of A.
