Thanks, i found this very helpful/educational. I have some questions that i really hope you can settle for me:
1. So a "set screw" on each bearing prevents the axle from sliding right out? Does the set screw actually go into the axle? Or is it merely tightened against the axle so to grip it?
2. What fixes the wheel hubs to the axle? A set screw?
3. Do the ball bearings turn with the axle inside the brackets? Or do the bearings stay stationary as the axle spins in them?
@wires99 I see now how the bearings go in their housings and the axle can lift out of all the housings. So the sprocket and brake disc are not welded but rather use set screws? what keeps them from slipping along the axle over time or under stress?
@zooberrr The set screws will hold the axle, but I use Loktite on them, and I still check them from time to time. I had some vibrate out once, and that allowed the axle to move.

A bit of advice from A guy that's been welding for 25 years.. For the people that are just new to Mig welding try if you can to weld vertically as much as possible until you get the "Flow" of it.
Having tried some other positions, I find welding as shown in the video to be easiest for me. It would be nice to be able to work standing up and welding like I was drawing on a chalk board, but then positioning and holding the parts becomes a problem. Welding flat on a table is a nice compromise between comfort and ease of setup.
now i have a question, i got my axle to day but i cant get anything to slide onto the axle..!!! its been painted black and its from northern tool, so now my question, WHAT SHOULD I DO? should i sand off the paint?
Guilty as charged - I'm most definitely *not* a pro. I wasn't sure of whether the heat would affect the bearings, so I just used the assembly to tack the brackets in place. I was more concerned with alignment than side-to-side moves. And yes, it's built heavy - real heavy. I like your characterization - built like a steamboat. There's definitely room to improve, but the first kart was also my first welding project. There really was no design involved.

This video was of the build for Neurotikart 2. With the current gear (well, belt really) ratio, it has a top speed of about 55 mph (88 kph). On flat ground and about 80% of top speed, I can run for about one hour. I measured the top speed with a reprogrammed bicycle computer.
Are both of your rear wheels drive wheels? That is, do you put keys into both the tires? On my project, I had trouble steering when both rear wheels were connected on the same solid axle with keys in both.
Yeah, it's called a "live axle", but I don't know why. What it means in my case is that the kart has a lousy (wide) turning radius, unless you just skid and swing out the rear end. Of course, that's half the fun.
Hey i have a couple questions, i was wondering do you need to re-inforce the brackets some how? because it seems if u take a hard turn they mite bend. also what website do you order your parts from. I would also like to say that these movies motivate me to build my own gokart! i am building on from a shopping cart though.
four brackets is a lot more strength than you think. i'm only using two brackets on my kart, and i am the one who should be worrying. and a MIG welder will provide a lot of strength compared to other welding processes. MIG is very pure, clean, strong, and easy to do. though, his welds were a bit too cold, they will be strong.

@cocotower In this video, they're not mounted yet. They go on the axle with set screws and clamps.

The bearings each have 2 set screws to secure them to the axle.

yeah your not supposed to paint the axle. all the axle accessories are made to fit snug and with paint, it makes the axle diameter bigger than 1''

What would be the advantage of using a 3 hole flangette as opposed to a 2 hole flangette?
