My descendants traveled from denmark and crossed the plains to settle in salt lake city utah after the civil war. Black africans are doing worse than Black americans on average, HOWEVER, that is solely due to the fact that african resources are basically being siphoned to other parts of the world at dirt low prices. Of the revenues they do get, very little of it gets to the general black african population. In america, there is welfare, food stamps and afirmative action, which on some levels works to keep black people poor and dependent.
I'm Black. I don't think a blank cheque would be a productive solution. Affirmative action/welfare are forms of reparation and are warranted, BUT at some point, we need to take responsibility for our own success and failure. White privilege still exists, so black disadvantage still exists, BUT as a black person, I know that we could pull ourselves above our current socioeconomic status and truly compete with all races in all areas if we end our sense of entitlement. Slavery has existed all throughout history. In fact, blacks were treated much better in American than most slaves in other countries. In America, blacks were considered property and were small in number. In fact only a tiny percentage of people owned slaves in America. Race is a completely social/cultural construct anyway and has nothing to do with genetics. For example, about a hundred years ago in America, southern Europeans were not considered "white," but now they are. And on Brazil's census, they have about two hundred categories under "race".

I'm reluctant to point out that the abolition of slavery in Africa had bugger all to do with the US, as Penn claims, but rather primarily stems from the Slave Trade Act of 1807 and the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833. Between 1808 and 1860 the Royal Navy's West Africa Squadron alone seized over 1,600 slave ships, and freed 150,000 slaves.
Any reparations should only come from the ancestors of the people who actually owned the slaves. The vast majority of white people living in america are the descendants of poor immigrants who couldn't have afforded slaves even if they'd wanted to, and indeed many of them opposed slavery because it reduced the average wages and amount of paid work available to them.

When the Civil War started, it was about state's rights vs. federal demands--the fact that the south was hesitant to free the slaves (because their industry relied at the time on slavery) was icing on a political cake. MANY of the Confederate military leaders were all for freeing the slaves (at least as a condition for freedom), but unfortunately many of the big money holders of their regions were not (the plantations).

The NAs have contracts to with the US to have their own land with casinos on them, that is the deal they made, and ultimately that is their reparation. The American Japanese that were sent to camps were given reparations for directly being involved. Reparations for Blacks are not as easily definable, because not all blacks were slaves or mistreated, and a lot of whites tried to help blacks. Black africans are doing worse than Black americans on average, HOWEVER, that is solely due to the fact that african resources are basically being siphoned to other parts of the world at dirt low prices. Of the revenues they do get, very little of it gets to the general black african population. In america, there is welfare, food stamps and afirmative action, which on some levels works to keep black people poor and dependent.

In America, blacks were considered property and were small in number. In fact only a tiny percentage of people owned slaves in America. Any reparations should only come from the ancestors of the people who actually owned the slaves. The vast majority of white people living in america are the descendants of poor immigrants who couldn't have afforded slaves even if they'd wanted to, and indeed many of them opposed slavery because it reduced the average wages and amount of paid work available to them.

As is clearly apparent here, I would prefer an honest dialog about race in America, instead of the name calling and dismissal of the truth that so many do. My ancestors were relatively well-to-do people from the Caribbean who immigrated to the US just before Jim Crow. During Jim Crow, the government took their property away. There is documentation of this...I'd love to see compensation for that, but I know darn well it won't happen.

@mostly4moderate No, I will not say that. I'm NOT saying that whites owe blacks anything at this point. I was merely bringing in an objective perspective on the issue. When the Civil War began, slavery was a minor issue, but I will concede that the Civil War made it a much bigger issue than it ever was before. Pardon me for trying to bring a little less of a one-sided view to an already overly complex picture.

When the Civil War started, it was about state's rights vs. federal demands--the fact that the south was hesitant to free the slaves (because their industry relied at the time on slavery) was icing on a political cake. MANY of the Confederate military leaders were all for freeing the slaves (at least as a condition for freedom), but unfortunately many of the big money holders of their regions were not (the plantations).

That does NOT justify continuing slavery in the south during the Civil War, but you have to understand that politics are hardly ever so simple, let alone so simply resolved. Lincoln signed on the Emancipation Proclamation in an effort to gain even MORE political support.

@TheMetallkylling The really fucked up thing about that is if they ever did that, I would end up paying reparations for the crimes of Nazi Germany... even though MY German ancestors have been in North America for three centuries (I'm Pennsylvania Dutch). But since the government fucks up everything it touches, I'd end up paying anyway just for having German blood. If that's how we begin the healing process, I'd rather get tetanus and die.

Well it is not so much about reparations it is about the fact that ppl in the U.S. are not even sure that slavery was a bad thing. Sad but true, and anyone that has been slighted has been given some form of reparations, the Native Americans, Jews, Japanese, you name it they have been given recompense and everyone agrees with it, but even think about giving it to Blacks everyone is up in arms, it is if anything perverted to say the least.

Slavery was a bad thing, BUT it was a universally accepted concept, and it was legal until the 13th amendment was passed. We are not denying that it was bad, we are saying no one even knows somebody that is still alive that was enslaved, so what good would it do to pay descendants of slaves. And no one is saying that anyone should pay reparations, the point is that in this country. They should not have been given reparations because no one owned a slave after it was made unconstitutional. It is therefor upon the individual's responsibility to try and get money to make themselves feel better instead of waiting on a government check.
Even if my ancestors were brutal plantation owners, I wouldn't feel guilty about what THEY did, I would say to people "Sorry for your ANCESTOR'S loss, but I did nothing to you."

The NAs have contracts to with the US to have their own land with casinos on them, that is the deal they made, and ultimately that is their reparation. The American Japanese that were sent to camps were given reparations for directly being involved. Reparations for Blacks are not as easily definable, because not all blacks were slaves or mistreated, and a lot of whites tried to help blacks. That same reasoning applies to the jews (if you mean the holocaust) and i don't think many want money reps

NA among other things have certain land grants and financial stipends as well as free entrance to University state schools. Japan as a nation was rebuilt, and it infrastructure was greatly enhanced. The American Blacks were not only enslaved, but also made to endure apartheid up until approx 50 years ago. The Jews were given recompense by Germany around the turn of the century. But none of that matters, for all of logic falls short of asking my defined question.

Slavery was not a government enforced practice, it was optional, and only half the the nation encouraged its practice. It is therefore an individual's responsibility to seek reparations, i shouldn't have to pay for it.
Why do you need reparations, should Operah, Denzel Washington, and Morgan Freeman? Will all that pain just float away?

You misunderstand the true meaning of what reparations means to an AA. WHen an AA is asking of reparations, what he is really asking is "Can we recognize that what happened to us in the past was wrong, so that we can move on to the healing process. It is not money he is asking for, He wants to know can we begin to come together. When there is a rift betwixt 2 ppl they cannot come together until culpability is recognized. If that is not recognized then the rift remains.
