The problem with alternative energy solutions comes down to control and what I call the paradise paradox. Let us suppose that President Obama achieved everything he says he wants to achieve for the US - less dependency on foreign oil, and increased alternative energy sources FOR THE USA. What about Mexico ? Their economy is based on oil, which is depleting fast. I expect huge waves of migration unto the USA, negating the benefits for alt. energy solutions in the years ahead.

A "penalty" for running a good business? What a joke! Either the oil companies will raise their prices to compensate or they'll start slashing jobs. Neither of which is this guy's dream scenario. This is pathetic! Saying a corporation making 40 billion is excessive is like saying I make too much because my revenue is $100,000, expenses are $90,000, and profit is $10,000! SAME EXACT ROI that the oil company is making! It's all about scale here folks! If you gross say $100 billion a year, but have to spend $90+ billion dollars to get it, you are making less than 10% on your money. Tell the stock-holders that 10% is "excessive"! Good grief! You simply DO NOT get it. Go take a class in basic economics. I'll try one more time. If a company "makes" 40 billion, that number alone does not tell me if the profit is excessive. I need to know what investment was required to make that much money and how many stock holders there are. Let's say gross revenues were several hundred billion dollars and the net after expenses is 40 billion. I don't see any problem with making 8-10 % as a profit margin. What's wrong with that?

Regardless of where the oil comes from, the oil companies will charge what the market will bear. Therefore homegrown oil vs foreign oil will not change the price per gallon at the pump.
The question is not "where do we get our oil from?" it's where do we get our ENERGY from" and "how much of the profit stays in the US ?"
Oil will eventually dry up! Why invest the economic future of our country in a well that we know will run dry? The sun shines and the wind blows right here at home!

The govt. gets $2 in taxes now, whenever an oil company makes $1. No other industry has so much risk, investment and operational cost than an oil co. Their shareholders deserve a good profit so the company can explore, invest and grow for without oil there is no America. Forget renewable sources for mobile energy needs. None I have studied make sense.
We're importing 70% of liquids now and are on the road to disaster. I'm a retired airline captain and board executive. I've done my homework.

Talk of alternative/renewable energy sources is all well and good, and I'll be first in line to buy a car that runs on air, or cow dung, or whatever - the problem is with few exceptions, there are no practical alternative energy forms of transportation that the average citizen can afford. As for the profits you are talking about: Look up symbol XOM. You'll see relatively FLAT GROWTH until September 2001 and when the war started. In the last 7 years, their stock price has increased over 250%.

One of the privacies I and most Americans SHOULD hold dearly is the right to earn a profit and not have it STOLEN by the government, which is what Barry Hussein Obama is advocating with a windfall profits tax. Both he and you fail to understand the difference between VOLUME and MARGIN. Exxon is making an average of 10 cents profit per dollar - many Fortune 500 companies do MUCH better than this, like Microsoft as an example. Exxon should not be punished for selling a legal product legally.
