  • I agree with most of the things you say but I disagree that the movie is driven by nostalgia. I myself have never seen an episode of Star Trek or seen any of the movies, I knew nothing about the characters or the actors who played them and yet I still had a fantastic movie going experience.

  • She is lovely.

  • i loved how i thought the ice princess would be Ali Arter who plays Tracie the cyrokenetic in Heroes but then you said Zac Effron and that was hilarious

  • Hehe - glad you liked it! :)

  • I really enjoy your videos, they're very awesome and i will remember the way you ask your questions...

  • Until this review, I didn't even notice that there was a lack of female characters... hn.

  • xD zac effron is a ice princess

  • btw, you look hot with glasses !

  • Very good review, Grace!!

  • Thanks, Anthony24cool!

  • Hey Grace! Great review! I'll be buying Star Trek on Blu-ray also! I was wondering if BTT would be covering The Brothers Bloom with Rachel Weisz when it gets its wide release on May 29th?

  • We will try! It opens limited in NYC this Friday, but it won't be playing at the theaters where we shoot.

  • Very good review, Grace. I really liked how you detailed the quality of the film & what you liked & didn't like, and all without spoiling anything.:)

  • I'm glad you enjoyed my review of Star Trek! And yeah, no spoilers here! :)

  • Star Trek is one of the best prequels since the Star Wars movies episodes 1,2, & 3.Great movie go see it as fast as you can.

  • WOLVERINE RULES!!!

  • He does, but the movie sucks. XD

  • Thanks for featuring me, Grace. You're cool and cute!

  • Darn, I wish i won the review, oh well. I am so seeing angels and demons this weekend

  • Lol I know what you mean about IMAX - when I walked past the screen in front it felt that if I sat in any of the front 5 rows my neck would never feel the same again...

  • i love your reviews :)

  • you received taken unusually late, it's already on television in New Zealand. I understand release dates vary but the length taken for this film to show is a little..extreme

  • Taken came out very late in the USA - BTT covered it the day it was released here! Crazy!

  • grace did you notice Winona Ryder in star trek? =]

  • I sure did! I thought Winona Ryder did a nice job and was able to make a real impact with just a few short scenes.

  • Grace sometime sounds like a sexist.

  • I think you mean feminist. :)

  • Hey I was not being mean, it just you push the female thing real hard like that made the movie bad or something, but the relationship between Spok and Uhura was random, anyway still love your movie math:)

  • Glad you enjoyed this episode, Will!

  • Well no one really wants to see women leads is the thing. A couple examples vs. the entire history of cinema. It's always way too forced. The Girls try to act all badass when you KNOW that it's all a lie, they couldn't do 1/10 the shit men could in such a physical role

  • A hero doesn't have to be all brawn y'know. ;) But I do agree with you, I don't like female heroes that are know-it-alls and single-handedly save the day. Those kind of roles don't do women any favors. Ellen Ripley is a great female character, and I thought Ginormica in Monsters Vs Aliens was also very nicely done.

  • pppphhhttt!!

Did you count the remaining 2 or 3 showings tonight for Star Trek?

C'mon Grace - love your show, but the numbers don't add up for me

  • I just report the numbers, I don't compile them - check with any major newspaper or website and you'll see this is what Star Trek grossed for the weekend.

  • OK, gotcha :)

Did'nt mean to snub you, but I'm a LONG time Trekkie and this movie might be what the series needs - a possible sequel in 2 years, if only it makes the cash it needs to do so; once again, sorry Grace :)

  • It's all good! I was hoping Star Trek would do better myself. It certainly was selling out on the coasts, but it's got to play in Middle America to post the really big numbers.

  • U ROCK!!!!!!!

  • aaaaaaaaaah i want to see star trek!!!!

  • Not really a Star Trek fan, but this one looks interesting. I'll probably see it later this week. Weekend movie crowds suck.

  • It was weird, I went Thursday night to see it, and the ticket guy said there hadn't been many people at any of the showings that night. He said he thought that moviegoers figured it opened on Friday.

  • Hey Grace,

Do you think Star Trek (2009) is better then the Dark Knight? While I think there in the same league of blockbusters that are smart and are have many oscar worthy cinematic qualities i think that the Dark Knight is superior for many reasons. Although i think they are both will become (or already have) classics and are 10 out of 10's in my book. So which did you like better?

  • I'm gonna have to go with The Dark Knight as well. While Star Trek was amazing, like I said in my review it borrows heavily from Star Wars. If pressed, there's no particular scene in Star Trek which really grabbed me. The Dark Knight, on the other hand, is masterfully crafted and many, many scenes leave a lasting impression.

  • Oh... second place! So close!

I have to agree the cream does rise to the top, but have this need to let time take a toll on my perspective of a movie. First Contact still is propped up at #1 in regard to Star Trek movies due to the sheer enjoyment I still get watching it.

    Love the show Grace!

  • Congrats!

  • I feel this summer movie season could be the biggest one ever. Star Trek, Transformers 2, Terminator Salvation, Harry Potter will all gross 300+ million.

Night at the Museum 2, Angels and Demons, GI Joe will all gross 200-300 million.

I predict Transformers 2 will be the largest grossing movie of the year.

  • I think the media puts too much emphasis on how much money something made, as if that's the way to gauge how good a movie is. It doesn't really say much to compare how much Star Trek made opening weekend, to how much Dark Knight made. I've read articles saying how Trek did better than Dark Knight. Do people besides industry suit and tie guys really care? To me, it's just a trivial bit of info. How much money a movie makes is affected by numerous factors, and is no sign of how "good" it is.

  • I love Movie Math Mondays! (its monday here!)

  • Yay Movie Math Mondays! :) Where's "here"?

  • The home of Flossy the Sheep.

  • so it was good? i mean i haven' seen it- maybe i will.

  • If you're in for a fun time, it definitely fits the bill as an action packed summer blockbuster with just enough humor and emotional parts. It's not a perfect movie, and I think people who aren't hardcore Trek fans may like it more. It's almost like Star Trek trying on the Star Wars formula. If that sounds interesting you, and you have any interest in the original Trek characters, go for it.

  • Great video!

  • Wait a minute -- women are allowed in the military now?

  • Where have u bin living in a cave?

  • Yes, he's "bin" in a cave with bin Laden, making videos and things. :)

  • Actually, yes.

It's a pretty nice cave, though. I've furnished it pretty affordably with a few area rugs and some Ikea furniture. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out I could get wireless internet!

  • Looking good Grace, I don't know what you changed whether its camera angle or makup, but you look greater:)

Another well groomed ice princess, funny Grace.

  • enough of your feminist bull-shit. It gets annoying.

  • My one-setence review was the best.

  • They were all good :-D Let's not make this heated competition now. Let's keep it all in good spirit.

  • Hey, I didn't realize I was talking to Carleton Banks! You were pretty good on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air!

    Don't worry, it's all in good spirit! : )

I'm just saying, my review was the best, that's all. Certainly better than yours! I mean... a new Harrison Ford? I guaran-fuckin-tee this new guy is nothing but a flash in the pan. I saw an interview with him -- he's dumb. He will fizzle out.

  • Sigh, YouTube haters.

*We didn't start the flame war!*

  • I don't hate you.

You're not very tolerant, are you? I simply have a contrasting opinion, that's all.

  • Oh cool.

But yeah I think Chris Pine will be a great action hero in the near future.

  • and I think yours was a run on. I personally liked mine better. It was also pretty offensive to assume that most of the people that saw it live in their parent's basements.

  • No, yours was no good.

And I'm supposed to feel guilty that I may have offended Star Trek fans? It's a FACT that most live in their parents' basements! Go ahead, look it up.

Picard is better than Kirk anyway. Everyone knows that.

  • Ya, that's fans of the series. I may plenty of Star Trek fans with no life that boycott this one.

  • That Carleton comment was pretty funny. That's what comes to mind everytime I see that picture.

  • You guys... :)

  • star trek will look AMAZING on blu-ray :D

  • Yay! 5th Place!

  • Next time I'm trying out Twitter. You must feel like you won, even though not officially. (see comment below)

  • Yeah, it's cool there is a top 5. But believe you me ... I'm going for those tickets one of these weeks. Not next week ... I'm not going to see Angels & Demons. But with Terminator Salvation comes out I'm so on that!

  • So will everyone else that saw Star Trek. To prepare for the challange, I observed the trend in the few winners. They used a lot of metaphors. I used that method and it didn't really work to well. I don't think I'm ever going to win again.

  • Don't give up hope, bramb600! We'll be giving away tickets ALL summer! :)

  • I like the new One Sentence Review countdown. It gives everyone hope that they made it and it seems like 5 people won. I consider it a win just to be mentioned on Movie Math.

  • still need to see it, will soon

  • I love this segment, quick and informative.

  • So I've worked at a theater for a long time now and the reason they have to pack in such a large amount of seats, many of which you've termed unacceptable is because Imax theaters cost a TON of money to make, which is the reason there aren't more of them. Furthermore in particular more people want to see movies like Star Trek in Imax, and with its limited two week run, we need to put in as many people as possible on the busy dates so that we can allow as many people as possible to see it.

  • I think it's kind of smart to have a two-week limited IMAX run for it. For the movies I've seen on IMAX in the past (including Batman Begins and Dark Knight), I've been in there with about two, three other people. Not exactly pushing maximum density.

  • I certainly see where theaters are coming from, but I wish there was another way to design the theaters so that more seats were acceptable. :( Oh well, just be sure to get in line really early I guess!

  • When I go for IMAX, I always show up at least an hour early, most times an hour and a half early, just to get the seat furthest back and in the middle. One time I went to see Dark Knight for the second time in IMAX, and I was there an hour early, and about 20 or so minutes later a boyfriend and girlfriend showed up, and as they entered, I could hear him telling his girl to go straight to the back, middle seats... and when he saw me, he stopped, dropped his head down, sighed, shaking his head :)

  • why would you go so early? I mean ya its the best seats but sitting there for an hour and a half is ridiculous! The only time i have ever done that was at the dark knight opening and the theater was already packed.

  • Partly because I'm a seating snob, and also because I can't stand rude moviegoers (unfortunately, which there is no shortage of), so I don't like people sitting behind me. I've had enough of people kicking my chair, or even having the nerve to put their feet up near my head. IMAX sitting is limited, and it's most important to be sitting as far back as possible. When I saw Dark Knight opening day in IMAX, I was there a couple hours early. If I came any later, I'd be sitting up too close....

  • i can agree on that!

  • We're working on it :P

  • My theater had the Dark Knight sell out every Imax showing for about a week and a half or two weeks

  • Wow, really? With the exception of that opening day showing of Dark Knight in Imax, which was pretty packed, all the other IMAX showings I've been to (Batman Begins, Transformers, Dark Knight for the second time) had about 3 other people, at most. Usually it was me and 2 other people.

  • Yes really, I knew because of the restrictions to my ability of getting passes for the Dark Knight in Imax, I paid to see it a few times.

  • I think, even with a two-week cap on Trek's IMAX run, that it would be easy to find seats. Dark Knight had a lot of hype going for it, especially after Ledger's death, and the early buzz about the Joker. And then word of mouth and the same Batman fans going back to see it a few times pushed its gross high. Trek, IMO, was entertaining but not worth me spending 16 bucks to see it on IMAX.
