The media acts like texting is some evil thing that teens use to make bad choices and hide things from there parents. Seriously? Come on. It's a convenient way to talk to your friends without dedicating yourself entirely to the conversation, allowing you to do something else too. Shortening text into acronyms saves characters and doesn't take as long. The only problem is it's something older generations don't understand because they didn't grow up with it.

OMG! LMAO!! I'm 44 BTW and I taught my kids the internet at 5... They are now 18 and 21 and we text to each other all the time. Parents just need to be involved. Teach the personal skills along with the texting. Obviously you can't go through life without personal interaction. Sometimes it has been easier for my kids to tell me something they may have found difficult to tell me in person... (like breaking the dining room table) but they told me over a text, didn't lie and admitted the mistake.

My school's AP took my phone out of my hand in the hallway. When i asked for it back, she said pick it up at the end of the week. I told her i was arranging a ride home, and if she refused to give it to me she would get to drive me home (i don't live near transit). She just tuned and waled back to the office. I followed her in and the secretary blocked my path and asked what i though i was doing. I said vary loudly that the AP had kindly agreed to drive me home. anyways, I got my phone back. :)

I think texting's good as long as it's not all the time. I think it's good to have a rule against texting while eating dinner with the family, in church, in theater and other such places.
I personally think that texting isn't that bad for a teen to do. I mean if you over do it then it is bad. I use capitals,punctuation, complete sentences and words. I find it very annoying when people say "brb" or "lol" I am just 14 going on 15 and barely even go through texts during the school year so I do good in school. I RARELY use texting now besides telling my friend we are there in the morning for carpool.
