I thought i was the only one that noticed that. This is a very unique performance in that he sings the second verse in a higher tone than any other. I wish the audio was a little better and this performance recorded somehow.
The lyrics do sort of sound reminisant of that, but it is about his label manager much like the whole of the album broken. The main character in TDS is 'Trent'.
TDS is a concept album. the ruiner is not an attack on god. NIN book by Martin Huxley, Reznor explains the lyrics came out of disgust for his manager and the label (TVT). fucked him on his contract and the copyrights. the manager basically pretended to be he's only friend, who just used trent. 'the ruiner's your only friend" = record label execs; 'how'd you get so big, how did you get so strong, how did it get so hard, how did it get so long =basically talking about his success. read the book
damn, i love his screams... so intense, so full of pain...

singing in a higher key for the second verse elevated the whole song and experience to a new level and the crowd seemed to respond to it.
