Back in the early '90's I used to collect hockey stickers that were sold in those sticker mania vending machines. For a joke, I stuck a little Winnipeg Jets sticker on the window of a bowling alley bar right below the neon "Budweiser" sign. It remained there for years before it finally faded and was removed by some random custodian. :(
Now, the SUN BELT teams are where the problem is... I can't think of one good reason why the people in Phoenix, Tampa, and Fort Lauderdale (Fort L. is where the Panthers play.) have NHL franchises they could honestly care less about (Unless they make the playoffs, which is the only time Sun Belt fans seem to "care."), while Canadian towns with TRUE fans like Winnipeg, Quebec, and Hamilton don't have a team to cheer on in the NHL.
Carolina is the only "Sun Belt" team with loyal fans.
I'm a little offended that some people on here are classifying all American Hockey Teams has getting the support of the Sun Belt teams...
Hell, I'm a fanatical New Jersey Devils fan, and I'll admit that while we have a tiny hockey market (due to the Rangers and Flyers being right there first and getting a headstart in fan support) and don't always sell out our building, we remain just as passionate about our team as other Canadian franchise's fans... And that's a FACT.
And let's not forget; Winnipeg KNEW the team was moving and still managed to average that. Phoenix should be "fighting" to keep their team there by selling out however; it's official, they've given up. No Playoff run will save them now. They are history.....
ameircans do care bout hockey but its a different vibe in america, in canada its more embraced with the heart, winnipeg and quebec i think should get teams back .
In a nutshell, the Jets left because the owners needed a new Facility that would allow them to generate the money needed to support the NHL.Unfortuently, the arena was not built in time and the Owners had no choice but to sell. There is a stigma attached to the Jets franchise leaving that it was because of the Attendance, well; the Attendance had nothing to do with them leaving. In an arena where there were 5000+ obstructed view seats, we did VERY well!
the song is called Jets Fight/Wear White. It was featured on an album ("Hockey Rock Winnipeg Style.") released during the Jets final season in Winnipeg to raise money for Goals for Kids. Half the songs (including this one) were original, but some of them were remakes of classic rock tunes by Manitobans. Innocence (Harlequin) became Numminen. You Ain't Seen Nothin Yet (Randy Bachman) became That's One Hot Russian Jet and Streetheart's One More Time became One More Save, about Khabibulin
what miami tampbay carolina and atlanta need with an hockey team the only care about baseball and there is not even snow give quebec city and winnipeg there teams back
Actually, there IS snow in North Carolina, how about that! Raleigh really doesn't give a crap about baseball, they are too into College Basketball/Football to care about that. Hockey is doing just fine in North Carolina, and unless the team starts bottoming out every season, it will only get better! The 'Canes are not going anywhere. =)
man the memorys wow , i knew i was living in toronto when the jets left but i was born in winnipeg and i lived out hear till i was 12 years old , now i liv back in wpg , and man i miss thows days so much
This brings a tear to my eye. The fact that Phoenix gets a team that plays to a half-empty house every night, while true passionate fans like this have no NHL to cheer is a sad reflection on what the league has become.
Agreed. We care about hockey up here because it's part of our culture. We have cold and snow! Americans will NEVER care about hockey because they can't just go down to the pond or community club and play some real hockey. You need kids being able to do that to create interest. They have their football and basketball because you can play them anywhere.
I beg to differ, about americans never care about hockey. Yeah, there are some places where it gets too warm here in America, but myself I love the hell out of hockey and i live in California. So if i want to skate i will go to the local rink, its no problem. And if you think americans NEVER care about hockey remember Lake Placid 1980.
Thank you Gary Bettman! This is one huge hockey market that is left untapped. But Phoenix's attendance is growing. One of these days Winnipeg will get an NHL team back.
bettman needs to go before he does something crazy like move toronto to honolulu or something! hockey was started in canada and therefore has a right to stay there.
actually there's rumors about an expansion in Toronto, meaning toronto would have two teams and Hamilton/Quebec/Winnipeg would lose a big chance to get one if only one team decided to relocate. According to Bettman the first city on the list to get a relocated team would be Kansas City. Wtf? The Scouts drew 2000 fans a game during their stay in the NHL there.
Very true however; let's not forget that Bettman also said at the '07 All Star Game Press Meeting that, IF there was a Canadian city to recieve a relocated / expansion team, it would be "Winnipeg First" in order to "right a wrong"..... ( Then again, it's Bettman so, who knows! )
GM's and owners have said that that Toronto Rumor was simply that; a Rumor. There was no such talk. I can only hope Winnipeg was on their topic of discussion for gods sake!
Based on how Minnesota old team only had 11000 fans a game (I think one year they had 7000) and their new one has 18000 and based on how USA is not a hockey country maybe in 10 years Winnipeg will have two NHL teams
God I miss this place! I wish they would have just kept it for people like me to walk through each day for the rest of our lives!! ;)
It was such an amazing place to see ( or not be able to cleary see... ) Hockey. As far as i'm concerned, The Jets left in '96 but, the heartache got even worse when they torn that building down....
MTS Centre however WILL host & be the sight of new memories soon when the NHL Returns to Winnipeg! A Place it should never have left.....
Went to a Hotbed of hockey in the city of Phoenix, Arizona. Shouldn't be there for too much longer however as it is another Bettman NHL Experiment that has/is failing......
whalers,jets,nordics,northstars....all moved to the south.
AT LEAST THE JETS GOT FAN SUPPORT IN WINNEPEG AND COULD MAKE THE PLAYOFFS THE COYOTES HAVE MADE IT LIKE 3 TIMES IN 11 YEARS AND LOOK HOW MANY CUPS THE SOUTHERN TEAMS HAVE TO SHOW...THATS RIGHT NOT MANY
Wow that brings back alot memories. It's been almost 12 years now since we lost our Jets. The old barn, what a place to watch hockey. We sure had alot of great players over the years. Keith looked so young. Teemu should of stayed here. 3 Avcos Cups in the old WHA, not to shabby either.
Man,every time I watch this,it brings a tear to my eye.I am American and a huge Ducks fan,But I am also the CEO and President of the board for Monster Energy, and would love nothing more than to bring a team back to Canada-"CANADA IS HOCKEY" AndI am in the process of talks with the NHL about an expansion team-Winnepeg would be the place to bring it back to.I am also a good friend of Teemu Selanne, and even he backs it-Keep you eyes open.
I am an American who loves hockey above all other sports, and what a fraud that the Jets moved. I would love nothing more than to see the Jets come back, what a shame. Bettman is an idiot, did he really think they would make money in Phoenix. BS, Canada deserves at least two more teams!
Bring back both the Jets and the Nordiques...that's all I have to say. I'm not Canadian, but it's a crying shame that money problems forced those teams to move. Gary Bettman doesn't give a shit about the fans! All he cares about is the money!
There's an old saying: Money is the root of ALL evil!
This is so sad. What is worse is this hockey hotbed, whether you like them or not, whether they are redneck or not, lost a hockey team that they LOVED. And lost a sport that is like a religion to these people, in a country that loves the game and will always love the game. To lose it to a country that doesn't give two shits about this game and put this team in a FUCKING DESERT is an injustice on so many levels.
The NHL needs to get a clue and move one of those DOA Southern franchises back to Winnipeg. Abandoning its heritage is what put the NHL in the mess it's currently in.
