thanks this video helped a ton. to get the power window out you can roll down the back window a little to make it easier to pull out and you need to take the panel out behind the license plate
Brian, I have been badgering my husband to fix mine for 6 months now. Thanks to your video, I was able to replace mine, but with some difficulty. Thank you for saving me so much money!
Got my "METAL" handle on ebay in 3 days for $21. Because of this video, I had the confidence of getting past that MF opening the tailgate, took me 20 minutes of cussing. Moving the power window was a stumble also. BE SURE TO START THIS PROJECT WITH THE WINDOW ROLLED UP. When you get to the inside, the power window removes with 4 x 10mm bolts, the TRICK IS TO THEN SLIDE THE WHOLE MECHANISM DOWN AS A UNIT about 5 inches to make access to the latch. I did the whole thing in 2 hours. THanks
Seriously Brother, get a Paypal Account and post your paypal address in the info bar. Guys like me watch your video, and you give us confidence to try this ourselves, I just saved maybe $250 because of you, and I would surely send you a $5 donation as a token of appreciation, and with 23k views, just think if many of us had the same idea, you could get paid (Like you should)
Great DIY video...thanks for posting ...my local dealer (Toyota of Claremont) wanted to gouge me for $440 to replace this. (With plastic OEM parts) I'm sure it would be broken again in a few years; anyway you saved me a ton of dough. Thanks
Thanks for your video. Very helpful! You helped me figure out how to remove the broken plastic hook and saved me a few bucks buying the replacement latch. Thanks again!
This is terrific! One remaining challenge; appears too much slack remains in the cable as the new handle does not release the latch. I adjusted the cable in the bracket, to no avail. Are you aware of a means to take up slack in the cable? Thank you again! gregorydbutler@hotmail.com
I got my handle off of Ebay all metal did the trick here for $21.93 Fortworthautoparts was the seller look in their store. Hope you don't mind the plug for them. It beats the heck out of the plastic OEM one.
Dude you did an awesome job with this. I liked taking the gromments out to reach the nuts on the back of it.
About every 2-3 years the factory handle breaks! The dealership charges about $268 or more to replace it. This would have been my third one and was looking for an alternative. Long story short...I purchased the OEM handle for $32 on EBAY (free shipping!!!) and thanks to this video...I did it myself in about 2 hours. Thanks for posting this video.
The arm can break inside the door leaving the rest attached to the handle, break it off at the handle.
I use a 90 degree offset screwdriver to pull the release.
Remove the 2 nuts for the latch and 1 for the lock before removing the outside plastic cover, if you don't you'll break off the stud that secures the lock.
Check the cable before closing, if you don't you'll be buying another latch.
I lube the window gears and track with white greaqse while the cover is off.
Great Video - you can also buy the part on EBAY for 30 shipped. Additoinally, I had to do a slight modification to the part by bending the lever to proprerly engage the wire. Thanks for the video... and Oh I Ain't goin' to the dealer :).

to get to the 10mm nuts, there are 3 rubber grommets above the black metal panel. You still have to take the panel off, but the grommets make it easier. Pop those out and you have easier access to those with an extension on your socket. Careful you don't drop the nuts.
@doniv07 It's probably locked. Can you have some one do the power locks while you're back there listening? I'd verify audibly that it's unlocking. Also it helps to look at the new one and look at the broken one with a flashlight to know what to move. Hope this helps.
This was incredibly helpful, thanks. rather than deal with all the skinned knuckles people talk about trying to get those two 10mm nuts holding the latch itself in, i took out the 4 nuts on the window mechanism (window was just barely cracked) and was able to move it out of the way, making the rest of the job a piece of cake. $30 and an hour or so instead of the hundreds the stealer wanted with OEM parts and their shop rates.......priceless. Thanks again
I was able to get the release by using a coat hanger bent at the top part of the hanger. Grab on the release and pull. You will be able to pull on the hanger easier than use a bend tool. (Or incase you do not have that tool he used)
Damn seem really hard. We need to do that, but we have gotten by with the window for the last year and a half. I cant believe Toyota used such a cheap part. Well, its not a problem on the new Sequoias, they use an electric latch now.
hey i love the video very helpful i got a big problem i have 2002 and the rear plate has flat head screws that have been on since new and they are rusted and wont budge any suggestions????
I probably should have said that I did appreciate your efforts. It just would have been better if someone was holding the camera for you. I am going to try it again today but I am really frustrated with this project. It took me 20 mins to change my breaks but it's takin days for this latch. I am very frustrated. I can't seem to get the licence plate cover off. It seems like it is held by a screw at the top but from the inside. I just don't know. I'll let you know what happens.......
@slmitc31 i had the same issue, top center of the license frame seemed held on by something. there was a fastener at about the right spot that i saw from the inside, figured it wouldn't hurt to remove and everything came out after that. was that really holding it on? i'll never know, but at least the job got done.
by the way, i did all the work with the hatch open. so when i released the window motor it didn't drop, as it was lying flat on its side at that point.
U botched this up wit the poor visual. Was u trying 2 hold da camera & fix da latch? Dont ever do dat again. The camera was movin all ova da place. HORRIBLE! If ur goin 2 hv a how 2 video then dont skip steps. GEESH! U didnt show how u got the license place cover off, how 2 get the 2 screws n da latch out, what happen when u took da 4 bolts out that holds da motor 2 da window bcuz I know when u take those bolts off u better b ready cuz the window will drop. U cud hv done better explaining!!!!!
@slmitc31 You're absolutly right on all counts. However, despite my errors I posted this anyway. I knew I'd get criticisms, but I'm ok with that. I don't have the time to create masterpieces. It just requires more time than I currently have. What little time I have to give. I will give it anyway in hopes it will help some one. Enjoy.
Wow that looks far too complicated just to replace a latch. I guess Toyota didn't think they would need to get replaced very often. By the way I like your videos man, you crack me up every time.
I hope it works. Found the part for $20 on ebay. Now for the fun part!
