“Let me tell you, the thing that they got wrong, Muhammad never said to cut the gloves off. I was there. They must have been thinking about the first Liston fight. When Muhammad got back to the corner after the 14th round, I knew we had Joe. I said ‘Loosen up kid, this is the last round, let’s get him.’ If you see, when we get in the corner, (between the 14th and 15th round) I am pumping my fist as I talk."
Angelo dundee
Thumbs up this comment so everyone can see what really happened.
Why didn't Frazier's corner just let him fight the last round, he seemed to want to continue, maybe just maybe he could have knocked Ali out. He took one hell of a beating what would another 3 minutes do it looked like Ali was out of gas the way he was sitting in his corner
@whereskim89 joe was much more exhausted, being the older man. he probably would have gone on only for the round to go on all the same and ali to win with a decision anyway, but who knows.
@kimomcgee frazier is was two yers younger, and had more stamina, ali was the more exhausted one consdering he collapsed in te ring after the fight, and frazier was fine walking around, joe was always more conditioned than ali
i respect joe frazier but i dont think he tried enough. instead of allowing ali to hold the back of his head when they clinch, he should of been pushing him back and throwing hooks to the head
@cashmoney1154 Thats it mate, you (im guessing an average kid, average fighter at best, average job, average girlfriend or no girlfriend), you tell these heavyweight champions what they were doing wrong.. Im sure your advice will inspire up and coming boxers for years
@cashmoney1154 You do realise they were punching each other for 10 rounds full at a fast pace, while they were both receiving and giving punishment at the humid, very warm Manilla.. I can understand Smokin Joe got a bit tired, same with Ali. And do you honestly think Frazier, one of the greatest fighters that ever lived, didn't think that he should hit Ali during clinchings.. Talking is easy, but fighting, in that kind of heat and at that pace is something entirely different.
That being said it's sad to see people trying to take the luster off Ali's victory. He won. The fight was stopped and not by the referee but by Frazier's corner. Everything else is commentary...And no documentaries , produced a generation after the event can change it.
Former heavyweight world champion Joe Frazier was arrested in February 2004 after police responded to a 911 domestic violence call from his North Philadelphia home. When police arrived a woman, the mother of Frazier's son, answered the door. She told the police that Frazier had hit her and there were injuries to her face to back up the claim. The charges were later dropped, after the woman refused to testify against Frazier.
Amazing boxing magic from Ali and Frazier. Both showed real heart and spirit to keep fighting like that until the 14th round. It's a shame that most modern boxers would barely last a couple rounds against these legends at their peak.
I recently heard about Ali wanting the gloves off after round 14. Well he said the same thing against Sonny Liston and his trainers sent him out to fight. Had this fight not been stopped, I'm sure Ali's trainers would have sent him out to fight.
@bizkit459 watch 3:56 and then repeat what you said and ask yourself if there is a semblance of truth in your words: yes, Ali was abusive, possibly racist to Frazier and Frazier was rightfully bitter about that. But to call Ali a coward is to overlook how he stood up against the war and lost his best years because of it. We never saw Ali in his prime, because they took his license. Plus there is dignity in how Ali deals with his current plight.
What's amazing is that Frazier was essentially blind in one eye from 1964 on. So he fought these last rounds pretty much blind due to his right eye being closed. The heart that he displayed was enormous. Not to mention Ali probably would have quit after the 14th round. He was telling Angelo Dundee to cut his gloves off. If Futch doesn't stop the fight, Frazier probably wins because his heart would have made him keep fighting.
Whats even more amazing is your ability to parrot every thing you watched from a documentary and cut that down into a single comment, despite clearly not having the slightest clue of what you're talking about.

frazier never won another fight after this and ali was never the same thats why there is no more 15 rounds , enjoy to watch but both were never the same after this , just a war
Frazier was truly courageous but in the last two rounds Ali was obviously the better fighter; to suggest Frazier would have magically won if it had gone 15 is delusional.Ali was hitting him at will.

@nlimchua, how sarcastic! Mike Tyson was a phantom during his boxing days. He was literally untouchable. His opponents' punches had little or no effect on him. He was already done when he came out of the prison. Ali lost to Frazier after staying from boxing for 3years. There is still nobody in the history of boxing that delivers ferocious punches with boldness on his opponents like Mike Tyson. His ability to defend and attack his opponents simultaneously on the ring stood out.
Ali admited the pain of the fight, and that he might have one more fight after this, a promise he did not keep. Had he not continued fighting, esspecially the last two fights against Holmes and Berbick, might he have not been in the condition he is in now?

Farewell, Frazier. Others will follow you when the Angel of Death comes calling. It's only a matter of time.
@athealovesu, we get it! Yes, Ali was cocky as hell, he never respected other boxers, he was insensitive to other people's feelings, he was probably not patriotic to his country. All these drawbacks would never stand in Ali's way as being an incomparable and undisputable icon. Now I'm about to make your day with this statement I'm about to make. The history of the United States of America and the whole of black race would definitely be incomplete without mentioning Muhammad Ali's name
@athealovesu, now if you do have your reservations about Ali's attitude towards his counterparts during his boxing days, then that's totally understandable. He was quite a handful in regards to his approach. That said, you still did not have to apply sentiment to Ali's overall performance in that bout though. Both of them were great fighters, but Ali stood the test of time in the "Thriller in Manilla."
TOO BAD TO SAY AND NO DISRESPECT TO TODAY'S FIGHTER'S BUT WE'LL NEVER SEE FIGHTS LIKE THESE AGAIN...FRAZIER AND ALI BROUGHT OUT THE BEST IN EACH OTHER!!
Ali later admitted what he said was wrong and that the only reason he taunted him was because he was scared of Frazier since he knew he had the power to not just knock him out, but destory Ali. He even admitted this fight was the closest he's ever felt to dying in the right. Frazier's 14 year old boy was crying during this fight, watching his father go toe to toe for 14 rounds, Ali went over to kid, put his arms around him and said 'Please stop crying, You're father is the greatest man I've met'
@OkayMor Yes, the fight was over and Ali was exhausted from treating Frazier like a human pinata under extreme heat and humidity, so he rested on the mat. Mariano Rivera did the same thing after the Yankees won Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS. What's your point? Ali put Frazier in the hospital for three weeks after the first fight and Smokin' Joe was on the verge of death - doesn't mean Ali won that fight.
@athealovesu, you definitely did not watch the fight, or if you did, you must be a little delusional in your over conclusion that Ali did not win that match. I refuse to go into details about various reasons why Ali won that fight hands down.
@femmy321 No you don't have to go in details and trust me even if you did, i still wouldn't care, yes ali won the fight but i still stand by my comments. frazier really was the desrving man to win the fight and show ali that although yes ali is a great fighter with amazing skill and ability in the ring, he still needs to show others in the game respect outside of it, especially as frazier did so much for ali and treated him well before their rivalry.
@athealovesu ...Ali was a grt entertainer...they all hav repeated once and again...boxing is a professional sport and they are here to make money...ali's fights always drew the money and a lot of credit goes to his mouth and antics...it was a golden era for boxing....being cockey writing poetry etc made the sport so interesting in the sense that these were thinking family, Oriented men rather than animals/dumbwits in the ring
@athealovesu ...Ali was a grt entertainer...they all hav repeated once and again...boxing is a professional sport and they are here to make money...ali's fights always drew the money and a lot of credit goes to his mouth and antics...it was a golden era for boxing....being cocky writing poetry etc made the sport so interesting in the sense that these were thinking family Oriented men rather than animals/dumbwits in the ring
There will never be another pair of awesome fighters as the two portrayed in the ring on this day ! RIP Smokin Joe. When they ring the bell in memory of you this weekend there will be alot of emotion but not for Manny and Marquez but because with your passing a great part of boxing passes with you.
its a sad that Joe has passed on, he was one from a group of greats that have made boxing what it is today. It was the trilogy of fights between Ali and Frazier that made them what they are/were today. rest in peace old champ you will be missed alot.
ali did not win that fight, it was just about who got tired faster, joe frazeir is the deserving winner, and i'm not saying that just because he recently died. i'm saying that because its true
@athealovesu Tell us all, what possible sense your comments make? Ali won either 8 or 9 rounds. Frazier's face was a mess and he was barely standing at the end. How is he possibly the deserving winner? For your info, getting tired faster is part of the game. So, Joe got hit more often and with harder, more accurate punches, tired out faster and yet, you think he won. Even your family would think your comments are insane.
@athealovesu Erm Ali did win that fight, and your quote, '' it was just about who got tired faster'' makes me think your confused with the marathon. Lastly, nowhere in the history of boxing agrees that your statement is true. Frazier lost...OFFICIAL.
@athealovesu Obviously you did not actually watch the fight. It was not all that close. Ali was ahead by 6, 5, and 4 rounds on the scorecards when Frazier's corner stopped it heading into the final round, and Frazier's face was grotesquely swollen. It was a decisive win for Ali.
" He (Joe Frazier) is the greatest fighter of all times, next to me." --Muhammad Ali
Listen to what Ali says at 8:33--- this is probably one of the greatest things that can ever be said of Joe Frazier. Compliments don't come much higher than this. If you were alive at the time you know how big these Ali-Frazier fights were and how great these men were.
The closest thing to a match to death between two great gladiators in a boxing arena. No one was far superior to the other, because both were comparably skilled and courageous fighters, at a time when boxing was a sport for the cunning and brave and hype was about wits and not media spectacle. A real classic, one that makes me immortalize Frazier and Ali in my memory.
RIP Joe...!!!!! I seen this fight Live when ALL boxing match's where FREE to watch.. Now they want a person to PAY for it..!!!! SHAME on those greedy people..!!!!
Thanks for putting that fight up. I'm 59, and Ali-Frazier was a great period to live through. Sorry to hear Frazier's dead. I live in Philly, and we considered him ours.
The thrilla in manila was just that.I am now married to a philipina from the phillipines.how wierd. Those were the great days of boxing when a man faced another and didnt have to go through all the crap boxers go thru today .
I had a bad feeling when I heard Joe was in hospice care something was wrong. But the champ is gone. My Grandfather always told me stories of what boxing USED to be. And boy were those bouts epic. God speed Smokin Joe.
Frazier is still mad that his corner wouldn't let him come out for the last round, but, seriously, what could he have done? Most likey, it would have been more of the same...just eating punch after punch and he may have even hit the canvas. Frazier's corner did the smart thing.
@LedWhisky69 You people just dont understand him i know how he feels no reason nor time to explain how but no matter how dangerous it was or how weak he was he had the guts the courage and the will he wanted to show that he could stand against the best till he died that he had pride that he was a man that he didnt want to let ali get away with all that he has said plus i heard that ali collapsed 2 minutes after he was pronounced winner so you cant be sure that he would have won ifjoe went out :P
@Rilexex I think I understand Joe just fine. Pride goeth before the fall. Eddie Futch was wise to not let him come out for the 15th round and I think Joe knew it at that time, too. He was being pummeled. Ali fought very strongly in the 14th, so I have no question at all that he would have come out for the 15th. Ali didn't collapse, he sat down amidst all the commotion and got a rest. He was tired, as he should have been, just like a marathon runner at the end of the race.
@LedWhisky69 actually if his corner would have let him out for the final round, he would have won, because ali surrendered during the break as well, just after joe's trainer threw in the towel.
@MrMmartialarts No he did not. What fight are you watching? Dundee and the rest of the corner were preparing Ali for the 15th round. There is no evidence whatsoever that they were about to call it quits. None. Frazier's corner, on the other hand, were ready to call it off even before the start of the 14th round. When Futch discovered that Frazier took an even worse beating, he had to stop it. These are the undeniable facts, sir. Everything else is pure nonsense.
@LedWhisky69 yes it is a fact that frazier's corner wanted frazier to quit even before the 14th round. and it is also a fact that ali admitted himself that he called dundee to cut the gloves before the 15th.
now i'm not sure if dundee listened to ali about quitting, but ali sure as hell didnt want to go another round.
i'm as big as an ali fan as anyone else, but the facts are the facts. if u cannot accept that, that's fine with me. i'll just be going about with my day.
@MrMmartialarts Ali himself stated after that fight that he wanted to quit, but you don't see Dundee doing anything to make that happen. They were preparing Ali for the 15th round just like they did for every other round. It's also a fact that this is NOT the first time Ali asked Dundee to cut off his gloves. He did the same thing during the Cooper fighter after he was floored and during the first Liston fight when he was blinded. Dundee NEVER allowed that to happen. He snapped him out of it.
@MrMmartialarts Therefore, it is VERY reasonable to assume that Dundee would have done and was about to do the same thing with Ali for the 15th round of this fight. Dundee was certainly no fool. He knew Ali was well ahead on points, Frazier was blinded and hurting badly, and just one more round it would all be over. NO WAY in hell Dundee would let that go. When it's for all the marbles, you don't quit because you're tired and feel like quitting. You suck it up and fight and Ali knew this.
@LedWhisky69 now we bring in the factor of dundee. HE did not let ali quit. ali WANTED to quit. ali was even quoted as saying if joe frazier came out for another round, he would have thrown in the towel. but dundee stopped that. he MADE ali keep on fighting. check the facts yourself. you have access to internet. good day.
@MrMmartialarts I already stated all of this myself just now. Why are you acting like I'm denying it? I just wrote it! LOL!
Part of a corner's job is to motivate a fighter and keep him going on the right path. Why would anyone in their right mind, then, try to take away some or all of Ali's credit for this fight because he needed Dundee's help? WTF, that's EXACTLY what he's there to do! Frazier has a corner pushing him, too, you know. At the end of the day, Ali would have come out.
ali's corner pushed him out when he did not want to. ali knew full well he was well ahead on points and was performing better. yet he chose to quit.
frazier's corner stopped him from going out when frazier wanted to. frazier knew he would lose even if he went out, and most probably suffer permanent damage, if not already. yet he chose to keep on fighting.
what does that tell you about both fighters hearts?
@MrMmartialarts Did Ali quit? That's the million dollar question. Did you see Ali at any time DURING THE ACTUAL fight wave off the ref and say, "I quit. I'm not coming out." If you didn't see it, that's because it never happened. Ali would have pressed forward, I'm quite certain of that. Frazier's motivation for coming out might seem like some grand display of heart to you, but the truth is he was hoping for a KO himself. It was obviously not going to happen, that's why Futch stopped it.

Frasier would have died if it went to the 15th round. He couldn't see!
alyo 4 months ago
@alyo - but Ali coudn't even manage to stand up, right after the fight.
OkayMor 4 months ago
@OkayMor Yes, the fight was over and Ali was exhausted from treating Frazier like a human pinata under extreme heat and humidity, so he rested on the mat. Mariano Rivera did the same thing after the Yankees won Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS. What's your point? Ali put Frazier in the hospital for three weeks after the first fight and Smokin' Joe was on the verge of death - doesn't mean Ali won that fight.
LanceBeckman 4 months ago
@athealovesu, you definitely did not watch the fight, or if you did, you must be a little delusional in your over conclusion that Ali did not win that match. I refuse to go into details about various reasons why Ali won that fight hands down.
femmy321 4 months ago
@femmy321 No you don't have to go in details and trust me even if you did, i still wouldn't care, yes ali won the fight but i still stand by my comments. frazier really was the desrving man to win the fight and show ali that although yes ali is a great fighter with amazing skill and ability in the ring, he still needs to show others in the game respect outside of it, especially as frazier did so much for ali and treated him well before their rivalry.

@athealovesu ...Ali was a grt entertainer...they all hav repeated once and again...boxing is a professional sport and they are here to make money...ali's fights always drew the money and a lot of credit goes to his mouth and antics...it was a golden era for boxing....being cockey writing poetry etc made the sport so interesting in the sense that these were thinking family, Oriented men rather than animals/dumbwits in the ring

its a sad that Joe has passed on, he was one from a group of greats that have made boxing what it is today. It was the trilogy of fights between Ali and Frazier that made them what they are/were today. rest in peace old champ you will be missed alot.

ali did not win that fight, it was just about who got tired faster, joe frazeir is the deserving winner, and i'm not saying that just because he recently died. i'm saying that because its true
athealovesu 4 months ago
@athealovesu Tell us all, what possible sense your comments make? Ali won either 8 or 9 rounds. Frazier's face was a mess and he was barely standing at the end. How is he possibly the deserving winner? For your info, getting tired faster is part of the game. So, Joe got hit more often and with harder, more accurate punches, tired out faster and yet, you think he won. Even your family would think your comments are insane.
bumblebeemoi 4 months ago
@athealovesu Erm Ali did win that fight, and your quote, '' it was just about who got tired faster'' makes me think your confused with the marathon. Lastly, nowhere in the history of boxing agrees that your statement is true. Frazier lost...OFFICIAL.
fredwilma1000 4 months ago

Frazier is still mad that his corner wouldn't let him come out for the last round, but, seriously, what could he have done? Most likey, it would have been more of the same...just eating punch after punch and he may have even hit the canvas. Frazier's corner did the smart thing.
LedWhisky69 4 months ago
@LedWhisky69 fraziers eye was closing and his other eye had a cataract so he was effectivly blind after the round he could have died if he went out
biglittlejujitsuman 4 months ago
@LedWhisky69 You people just dont understand him i know how he feels no reason nor time to explain how but no matter how dangerous it was or how weak he was he had the guts the courage and the will he wanted to show that he could stand against the best till he died that he had pride that he was a man that he didnt want to let ali get away with all that he has said plus i heard that ali collapsed 2 minutes after he was pronounced winner so you cant be sure that he would have won ifjoe went out :P
Rilexex 4 months ago
@Rilexex I think I understand Joe just fine. Pride goeth before the fall. Eddie Futch was wise to not let him come out for the 15th round and I think Joe knew it at that time, too. He was being pummeled. Ali fought very strongly in the 14th, so I have no question at all that he would have come out for the 15th. Ali didn't collapse, he sat down amidst all the commotion and got a rest. He was tired, as he should have been, just like a marathon runner at the end of the race.
LedWhisky69 4 months ago
@LedWhisky69 actually if his corner would have let him out for the final round, he would have won, because ali surrendered during the break as well, just after joe's trainer threw in the towel.
MrMmartialarts 4 months ago
@MrMmartialarts No he did not. What fight are you watching? Dundee and the rest of the corner were preparing Ali for the 15th round. There is no evidence whatsoever that they were about to call it quits. None. Frazier's corner, on the other hand, were ready to call it off even before the start of the 14th round. When Futch discovered that Frazier took an even worse beating, he had to stop it. These are the undeniable facts, sir. Everything else is pure nonsense.
LedWhisky69 4 months ago
@LedWhisky69 yes it is a fact that frazier's corner wanted frazier to quit even before the 14th round. and it is also a fact that ali admitted himself that he called dundee to cut the gloves before the 15th.
now i'm not sure if dundee listened to ali about quitting, but ali sure as hell didnt want to go another round.
i'm as big as an ali fan as anyone else, but the facts are the facts. if u cannot accept that, that's fine with me. i'll just be going about with my day.
MrMmartialarts 4 months ago
@MrMmartialarts Ali himself stated after that fight that he wanted to quit, but you don't see Dundee doing anything to make that happen. They were preparing Ali for the 15th round just like they did for every other round. It's also a fact that this is NOT the first time Ali asked Dundee to cut off his gloves. He did the same thing during the Cooper fighter after he was floored and during the first Liston fight when he was blinded. Dundee NEVER allowed that to happen. He snapped him out of it.
LedWhisky69 4 months ago
@MrMmartialarts Therefore, it is VERY reasonable to assume that Dundee would have done and was about to do the same thing with Ali for the 15th round of this fight. Dundee was certainly no fool. He knew Ali was well ahead on points, Frazier was blinded and hurting badly, and just one more round it would all be over. NO WAY in hell Dundee would let that go. When it's for all the marbles, you don't quit because you're tired and feel like quitting. You suck it up and fight and Ali knew this.
LedWhisky69 4 months ago
@LedWhisky69 now we bring in the factor of dundee. HE did not let ali quit. ali WANTED to quit. ali was even quoted as saying if joe frazier came out for another round, he would have thrown in the towel. but dundee stopped that. he MADE ali keep on fighting. check the facts yourself. you have access to internet. good day.
MrMmartialarts 4 months ago
@MrMmartialarts I already stated all of this myself just now. Why are you acting like I'm denying it? I just wrote it! LOL!
Part of a corner's job is to motivate a fighter and keep him going on the right path. Why would anyone in their right mind, then, try to take away some or all of Ali's credit for this fight because he needed Dundee's help? WTF, that's EXACTLY what he's there to do! Frazier has a corner pushing him, too, you know. At the end of the day, Ali would have come out.
LedWhisky69 4 months ago
@LedWhisky69 now we're talking.
ali's corner pushed him out when he did not want to. ali knew full well he was well ahead on points and was performing better. yet he chose to quit.
frazier's corner stopped him from going out when frazier wanted to. frazier knew he would lose even if he went out, and most probably suffer permanent damage, if not already. yet he chose to keep on fighting.
what does that tell you about both fighters hearts?
both fighters were incredible to go 12 rounds.
MrMmartialarts 4 months ago
@MrMmartialarts Did Ali quit? That's the million dollar question. Did you see Ali at any time DURING THE ACTUAL fight wave off the ref and say, "I quit. I'm not coming out." If you didn't see it, that's because it never happened. Ali would have pressed forward, I'm quite certain of that. Frazier's motivation for coming out might seem like some grand display of heart to you, but the truth is he was hoping for a KO himself. It was obviously not going to happen, that's why Futch stopped it.
LedWhisky69 4 months ago
@LedWhisky69 ali edged out a win BECAUSE frazier's corner stopped frazier from going out. that is a fact that happened in real life.
ali still WOULD HAVE came out and won the match for the 15th round. that is a fact AS WELL, but that did not happen.
if you are still going to rage and ridicule people over this, then i'll just assume you as either a troll, or very stupid.
MrMmartialarts 4 months ago
