i grew up with the northern lights always being there in Canada... was never that special, it was just there. The hype about them from other people shocks me lol
i really have to see this b4 i die, but how is that possible when i actually live near the equator. i think i have a better chance of seeing an alien :(
@DanMcBels no u don't cuz u've seen it and i didn't :(!!! i really want to see it please make a video of it for me hahahaha. nah maybe when im older i can travel too Norway and im going to see that thing i just have to :(.
@DanMcBels omg i wanna be there when the sun is there for 24 hours :(. im so jealous right now ahaha i should move to norway when im older! just to see the sun for 24hours in 1 day and to see the northern lights ofcourse =D.
I haven't seen the Aurora since I was a kid in the '50s. They were quite frequent then, as I recall. Camped out in the Adirondacks one fall, we were up all night for an amazing, dazzling 5hr display.
I always felt there should be sound with them. Prokofiev's Dance of the Knights would be good........
All the northern countries, which are in touch with arctic circle (that means you're close enough to the north pole), have them... finland, iceland, sweden, norway...
in finland we have aurora borealis most at winters, and most in Lapland. Lapland is northern Finland (covers about 25% of the whole area)..
Ahhh the wonderful technology of HAARP...the things they can create! I admit, it is beautiful. But HAARP officials even admitted to creating 'paintings in the sky' with this technology. Either way, it's very cool!
I observed this natural phenomenon on Kola peninsula, very beautifully, magnificent modulations and all it is accompanied by a sound (such soft crackling of electric categories) it there was a long polar night. It was possible to see on a working trip it it is beautiful, very much! :)
to the people complaining that he didn't mention norway, the first place he mentioned was "the northern parts of most of the nordic countries", as in norway, sweden, ect.
One night I saw green auroras from North Vancouver of a kind I've never seen on tape nor even heard of. They looked exactly like the damp ripples formed by waves that you see on a flat, sandy beach, but sped from north to south at an astonishing rate. It was absolutely dumbfounding. Has anyone else seen auroras like this?
and my mom told me they were the northern lights, i was like whaaa! lol but it was soo awsome, i was lucky if i didn't look out the window, i would've missed them, it's like being underwater when they pass by, so beautiful
i remember my 1st time seeing these lights it was in the summer, it was around 4-3 A.M. and just happened to look out the window just to stare at the night sky and i see these light green ripples across the sky, i was like wth is going on with the sky and i woke up my mom and i was like mom there's something going on with the sky, cuz i never experience the lights B4 i didn't know we get them in Michigan, i only seen them in Balto so i thought you could only see them in Alaska.
northern lights are magnetic field effects resulting from distortions and rearrangements of the field and the resulting particle 'intrusion' from outside the atmosphere within it, basically. it can be seen any place that the magnetic field is sufficiently permeable or malleable. if a particularly large solar storm were to happen it is entirely possible that the whole planet would glow. and possibly not be particularly healthy to watch. on average tho, certainly werth a watch, and an ahhh :)
He didn't say that the best places to see northern lights is in Norway and Sweden where it is a much bigger chans to see them then in Russia and Canada
i got5 some of these northern lights on my camcorder from alberta last night, they were pink and green. I need to convert the video from whatever it is now to a different kind of video so it is uploadable to youtube. can anyone give me some advice on how to do that please, thank you.
You don't have to just go to Alaska, Canada gets them quite often. My parents used to live in the prairie regions of Canada, and would occasionally watch them out the window. Even parts of northern United States (such as Michigan) see an occasional glimmer. :D
its nothing like sitting outside relaxing with a few beer's on a cold vinternight watching the northen light's dance above your head;D i love living in Norway:D
In the northern part of Norway is the best place, it isn't northern light in the south often. The best time is probably winter, spring or autumn, because it's midnight sun here in the summer.
I saw the northern lights in Alaska and obviously you can also see them in Canada. What a sight! Breathtaking and you feel a sense of awe! I think everyone should see them and also see the stars at night! Too many areas of the world, the beauty of the night sky can not be seen because of pollution and manmade lights, etc!
@Calsummersishere i think that everyone shall move there then and create citys and other stuff... and the lights.... and northern lights wont be seen anymore
Up here we mostly take it for granted. I mean, its beautifull, but when you have seen it hundreds of times before you even knew what it was it kinda loses its magic. I would think the "midnight sun" and "times of twilight" would be a more moving/fascinating experiense for most people (tho not as visually stunning ofc)
Then you should also know that about wave-particle duality. Sure, they're all called particles, but they're also behaving very much like waves.
(Of course all elementary particles behave like particles, I know that ;) it's just that I think their other side always seems a bit overshadowed by that name...)
In the beginning of my army training I used to take a minute or two to observe the northern lights before going to the tent. In january-february 2008 you could see it almost every night.
Can't wait for the next solar maximum! That will give the best possibility for people south of the arctic circle to see these dancing lights. I've only seen a good display once here in western New York State (43 degrees North Lat). Probably would have seen more if cloud cover wasn't so common here.
Hey guys.. if u guys really wanna c Northern lights go to the Nord of Norway inside Arctic circle. Between Nov- feb is the best time to see northern lights..
no they arent dangerous it is caused by solar flares hitting the earth witch is then channeled to the poles creating the aurora borialis aka the northern lights
Hey does anyone know how fast are auroras in person? I feel that most videos on auroras, speed up the frame rate. But anyway I hope to see one in person soon
200 years is just a number. The northern lights don't follow a calendar. You would need a very powerfull (and damaging) geomagnetic storm to see it close to equator. However, the easy solution is just to visit a place far north from october to march, and you can almost see it every night if the sky is clear. I actually saw it a couple nights ago :)
The northen and southern auroras used to be visible all over the planet, before artificial light and EM grids for electricity, and pollution of all kinds fucked it all up.
The planet is dying, it's aura only extends from inside to a little bit in the artic / antartic circles.

The technical explanation is .... well scientific, but I still whistle at the lights just as I have done for years and they still dance for me. I believe in being whisked away when ever I have the opportunity.. Love it Luna
wow you're tired of it, and i vowed to see the aurora borealis before i die. it's the one thing i have to do before i die! where do you live? maybe i can move there!!
