OSalty...this IS the Leon Russell arrangement he did for Joe Cocker. On the upside...this tells me you can use this arrangement without the horn section and the back up singers...BUT...check out the Leon/Joe version on Youtube...it smokes....the reason why Warren covers the tune. There is something to be said for having the idea first.
this is the first time ive herd this band ,ive red about them for years now i must say their in my top ten bands so thank you for letting me hear such great music , warren is one of the best guitarist alive today its about time someone brang back real music
Dude u gotta c them live. Especially when they do their annual new years eve run @ the beacon in NYC. Go every year sick show 3 sets starts bout 9pm ends after 2am FUKN AWESOME
What a cool rendition. One thing you can say about Mule is that they put their own signature on any song they cover. It's not like they are doing karaoke.
Joe Cocker's take on "The Letter" with Leon Russell and the Shelter People is an unbelievable song. Originally by the Box Tops, the letter was reinvented by Joe and came out to be a million times better. Check it out some time, and don't make a dick measuring contest by saying blank is better than blank bc that's completely subjective, just enjoy the music and chill. oh, and I've seen clapton, cocker and mule live I know warren's great but show a little respect for 2 legends
Dude do you even know music ??? Listen to it don't go by name brand names its a fact almost every song Warren covers he owns mule fans kowthat.Bar none the best and hardest workin musician out there today. Lets see ABB, Mule & now the Dead all at the same time . Respect is ok but move on & give a man his dues. By the way just caught him with the Dead @ MSG fukin amazing. PS don't think it has to do with any dick measuring it is what it is.
To me Warren is just showing respect for his peers and he takes them and makes them his own, they are played Mule style no point in drawing comparisions, Warren just rocks PERIOD.
AMEN add to that more heart & soul. Seen both slowhand & cocker neither could do a 3 set 6hr show like the mule does every new years eve. Been to everyone in NYC. Like you died and went to heaven. Not bout the money with Warren just bout the pure love of music.

There's just something wrong here. What are they doing wrong? I can't put my finger on it, but this, like most things modern, is unlistenable for me...its as if the world has forgotten how to play and how to properly mic things. Everytime I watch the 1970 Joe Cocker performance, I am blown away! This? Every cover? Joe's own performane in the 80's? All just...bad!! I can't stand it!! It's mostly today's drummers!! Just terrible!! But, I still have hope.
thats because all rock in the 70s was super poppy. you just cant handle anything thats a little idiosyncratic or inventive. that joe cocker stuff is pure pop. i mean nothing wrong with that, but it just doesnt challenge the pallet. after a while eric clapton, joe cocker etc all start to sound the same. man up, grow a pair, and stop being such a little elton john loving finger tapping wussbag pussy,
Then don't listen to it. Maybe you should try to feel it. Good luck trying to pin-down what it is they are doing wrong because they're not doing anything wrong. In fact they did everything right.
My favorite is Mule's cover of "The Shape I'm In" by the Band. For Warren has to be "One" his voice is so soulful in it. Can't wait to see Mule here in DC in a couple of weeks.
Not to take anything from Joe Cocker, it's just that the absolute magic Warren Haynes can put into ANY cover is so powerful! There are many songs he does better than the artist who made the song popular. Long Live Warren Haynes!
dude better than cocker??? come on man. dont get me wrong i think warren is a god but better than cocker? that is a pretty strong statement. much peace
I'm just saying I have seen cocker live not much to talk about. Now I have never left a Mule or ABB show dissapointed. Warren was born to play live. Bar none the hardest working musician out there.
that i will agree with you on, i love mule shows the longer the better and warren is a god!!! But i guess cocker is a god in his own right too. he did have the woodstock theme song. much peace to you
Awesome, is this from a 2007 show at Red Rocks? I was at there and thoroughly enjoyed "Letter", and the stage looks like Red Rocks. Warren is always rockin' it.
Joe Cocker performed by Gov't Mule! COCKER POWER 1971.

So no one noticed Warren teasing Bob Marley's Lively Up Yourself in the intro?

anticlimactic cymbals are anticlimactic. Great band though

On this song, Warren's soulful voice makes the song sound very "Allman Brothers" to me at the start. I love this band.

Don't think they wrote it, but yes, they recorded it first. This is definitely based on Cocker's version though. Who's playing keys?
