i WANT today's generation to SEE this video side by side with the video of mr. williams with julie andrews (not judging them), but mr. williams dared not even hold the hands of THE SUPREMES. he & ms. andrews are head butting. then go look at BOBBY DARIN & THE SUPREMES sing "FALLING IN LOVE WITH LOVE." ARM&ARM!!! now ask yourself, just HOW STUPID IS RACISM?!
The Supremes sung an amazing hits medley (Come See About Me/ Stop! In the name of love/ You Keep Me Hanging On and I Hear a Symphony). I wish I could see it again!
I think Diana Ross was a terrific entertainer, so was Andy. I really miss those great old variety shows. Thanks for posting a lot of them on your channel.
@jazzscherzo Whitney is another prime example. Blacks derided her long before she paired w/Bobby. Diana was the black Barbara for her generation as Whitney was for hers. Yet, Whitney discarded it to be accepted by her community; she married black trash & changed her music. She is still unhappy & dilapidated. She should honor her spirit like Diana & she would be in a better place, even if she wanted to marry an upscale white man or female. Diana is doing well for she is staying true to self.
@DetroitLives313 My words are so TRUE! A segment in her community has always put DIANA down because she doesn’t abide by their beliefs on how one should live according to her perceived blackness. Yet, she has been compared to every other conventionally accepted Black Artists/People only to be put down as though she doesn’t deserve any of her success. Even Barbara Walters says it in her “Workin Overtime” interview. Whom do you think she’s talking about? Anything she does is looked at critically.
@DetroitLives313 Diana jokes about it in her early concerts w/line, “What ever happened to that girl from the Brewster projects?” Whom do you think she’s talking to & about? Diversity & Racism comes in many perspectives; not just color. It’s a mentality! You need to check yourself first for you can’t handle the truth. Anytime a sister/brother unnecessarily derides their own, that’s racism at its peak, & many other blacks artist are not exempt from it. Saying it doesn’t make me racist
@DetroitLives313 Conversely, I can acknowledge that the white power structure refused to properly praise Diana for her success, (esp. in Lady Day) because in many ways she rivaled her white counterparts. Yes, white people have a way of putting her in her place too, just like black people. That’s why artists like her have frequented Europe. This is nothing new. Learn history & you’ll find out who is really racist. I say it about whomever depending on the subject matter. I am not racist. Candid!
@jazzscherzo Exactly! But that’s not “Keeping it real” for you lack the courage to be you. If you do not live up to their cultural standards & are black, you will be knocked. Look at Diahann Carroll; she is underrated for her accomplishment in the black community. There is a lot of problems with black gays in their community, esp. if you could be perceived as hetero & are openly gay/bi. I have seen it often. Those personalities tend to cross over to escape those issues; nobody wants to hear it.
@jazzscherzo Diana has an appeal that crosses over color/race...an international backing. Black is many things & should not be stereotyped, even by your own. Diana has a responsibility to be true to herself. Flo wasn’t successful due to Flo, though obstacles are always there. What God had for Flo, only Flo can deny it for God is in control, if that is our focus. BLAMING for why I can’t & HATING your own are by-products of SLAVERY/DEVIL. Hate starts from within oneself before you can pass it on.
@jazzscherzo Each of those Divas was very competitive. Patti was exactly that, though she may paint herself as a St., & Gladys & in a not so nice way. The black community ignores it for they were black enough. Diana did what they couldn’t do with their typical blackness, & I don’t mean that despairingly; but many Blacks were trying to feel good about self then/now so they cling to an ideology of who they think they are for validation. Then they apply that to Diana, which has nothing to do w/her.
@classanddignity Berry had a right to pick Diana if he thought that she was best for his vision. Companies do it all the time & employees play into it; that’s business. Flo didn’t like it & caused problems for herself/group, instead of seeing this as a stepping stone for something better (her path/place). Many Blacks feel that if you are BLACK, you owe them something, so Diana needs to be/sing this way to be picked, when that’s not she. Thus, they will knock you & create OTHER reasons.
It amazes me that people are so passionate about the supremes internal problems! I mean really....isn't this over 40 years ago? The bottom line is, all were great at what they did. The Supremes are the greatest American group EVER! I've never bought (or not bought) a record because of someone's personal life! Just give me good music....AND THAT THEY DID!!!! DO I think Diana was a selfish bitch? YES!!! Do I think Mary was 2-faced? YES!!! Do I think Flo was stupid not to suck it up and not make t
be sure to check out the youtube video of DRATS with Tenn ernie ford ..the one where they are riding in the carriage and are wearing those showgirl hats. never saw this before.
Wow Florence , & Mary must have really toned it down for Diana & Andy , because i've heard Mary & Florence solo & they could totally sing way louder & better than this sorry display !
my how times have changed. did you notice how 'careful' everyone was not to touch andy or have andy touch them. bobby darin didn't give a crap. he touched! usually magnificent, ross' wig is cut badly.
Oh my God, I'm in heaven. This was just beautiful. Where did you find this clip. See what we're missing out on with today's music? Today's music is crap..And age doesn't have anything to do with it, cause I liked the Supremes when I was 10 and have liked them ever since. Diana had left by the time I was buying their records
I would like to thank you as well. these clips are so introspective. At this time, the battling between Florence and Gordy was at a fever pitch. Eventhough there hadn't been a name change yet...in reality Mary and Florence were inconsequential to this group. Gordy had engineered the spotlight to his women! Gone was the youthful fravolity and the stage banter. This was a homogenized, boring Ross centered set. If only she had held on and let Ross leave and be a part of a new group!!!!
It's hard to believe that during this time there were very high tensions among the Supremes particularly between Ross and Ballard. They sound, and look beautiful here and yet despite there chemistry, it is shocking there was so much background drama.
@etrax2000 What the hell are you talking about? What is it with you freaks that are always trying to read something into what Diana was doing? She was just singing......jeeeez.
@SpazChat Diana was in no way harmonzing in the group either visually or audiable, she was doing what she would so more and more f and that is to "GO FOR HERS" and damm everyone else. Diana wanted a duo perormance. with her and andy
@etrax2000 For you to say that, you're not paying attention. The staging was due to management, not Diana silly. And in one part of the clip the girls huddle together and harmonize. Stop being so negative and ridiculous trying to read things into it that aren't there. They're just there in your eyes due to jealousy and hatred of Diana. I know that jealousy breeds sociopathy, but that doesn't make it good, sane or healthy
@SpazChatThe only people who are seemingly delusional are those Diana worshippers who accept only her finished product and fail and refuse to study or to investigate the things that she would do to develop those dazzling performaces. Diana demanded solo rehersal times on many shows and didn't want "The others" to even be there as often she would spring surprises on the other girls. that would make them seem uncomfortable or unprepared. Miss Ross was ruthless in her rise to the top.
@etrax2000 If what you say is true, then those of you and others who bash Diana and make all these claims she was ruthless need to explain yourselves like you just did, cause most people don't know what you're talking about when you make these accusations about her behavior and ruthlessness
@SpazChat TO THE CONTRARY, Most people who would make any comments about the Supremes or Miss Ross are already more than aware of her history. Its been no secret as to how she would behave out of the glare of the cameras. So any explanantions of attacks on her would only be redundancy. All fans and music historians are well armed.
@etrax2000 BLACKS are HATEFUL when it comes to DIANA for she is COMMERCIAL.Diana is downed for being the lead when Berry controlled the group.Yet, they don’t say this about Patti who changed Labelle to Bluebelles, Patti Labelle & her (the) Bluebells. She SCREAMED over the other girls, yet I do not hear blacks criticizing her for SHE was BLACK enough for them.Supremes also had separate dressing rooms at a point which is mgmt's orchestration;she did not wield that power alone. SpazChat is right.
@classanddignity Diana has a well documented history of backstabbing selfishness &mean spirited to & with others especially those who she felt threatened her sense of self worth. Diana came a long way from a time when she was TOO DARK TOO THIN AND TOO WEAK of a performer yet she managed to become an icon, not all on her own but the truth of what makes one a superstar are not always based on kindness. Some don't seem to care but others do. You can't have sparkle without the shadows....empty light
@etrax2000 I guess what I said is true.U say TOO thin, TOO weak performer. For WHOM?Obviously not the millions of DIVERSE fans who bought the music! So her DARK color was not superseded by her talent & way, which was not of a typical black female.Berry could see this & that’s what he saw in her.She was picked over the other two girls for she was not LESS, as you state, just different which equals incomparable, but less for many black Americans for it’s not befitting your epoch cultural standards
@etrax2000 Diana is not perfect;nor are the other girls. She happened to triumph over them. Much of this was Berry’s doing. He did make her the focal point as he did with many of the other groups. The other girls may not have agreed with his decisions, but that’s business & his right. They wanted to stay as they started out. That’s not practical in business so there was a struggle.Yet, you/your-like have a blame mentality, esp. when the person is not a typical black; criticism will follow. What facts?
@MsRgillespie My words have veracity. Of all the black females, Diana is the most successful: yet most criticized from her own with disparagement of personal attacks as it relates to her soul, talent, looks, lifestyle, blackness & who she has become as a black artist. Diana jokes about this in her early concerts. Yet, despite her success, the industry has overlooked/under-awarded her. Those findings are indicative of U.S. which knows black/white too well. Ignorance is your lack of understanding.
@SpazChat The FACT that Diana didn’t have that typical BLACK appeal & was singled out over the two girls is a sore spot for many BLACKS, & she didn’t care what others thought is a rub for haters. Conversely, some whites may see her success as too revolutionary. ONLY when it comes to the Supremes do haters want to minimize DIANA’s contribution & UPLIFT the other two girls, but they do not have the power to rewrite history. Yet, they can not be specific as to her infraction. It’s called greatness.
Thanks a lot for posting this. Andy was a babe and a great singer! The Supremes sound and look great together here. I love the clips from this show with them in these gowns with the completely matching shoes. ;)
