lol no its depth of field, I have been in videography for 5 years. You can get it by zooming. it makes the DoF less which in turn blurs the background, and that's hard to do in editing, in fact you would have to go frame by frame and cut round your subject.
Indeed, manual focus could produce this as most camcorders focus on the larger percentage of what's on screen, since someone standing there would only take up about 30-40% it focuses on the background removing the DoF where you want it.
I've got the same camera as in this video, and honestly I wouldn't recommend it for someone who wants to make film-like videos. But if you don't care about the "movie look," this is a really solid camera. Very small, sturdy, controls aren't bad, even though they're 100% touchscreen based. Makes for a great home-video camera. But if you want stuff to look super sweet, I'd go for the comparatively priced Canon HV20. I wish I would have.
i have a HC5 and this video looks so much better than what i have produced.. how are you exporting it? what program ect.. my issue is when you pan it blurs! its not nice to watch.. however you dont have that problem at all!!
Definitely MiniDV, which has its advantages and its drawbacks. Higher video quality with MiniDV, but you're limited to recording an hour at a time. You also have to transfer in real time over firewire, and you can't skip around various scenes. On the other hand, as long as you can buy more MiniDV tapes somewhere, you'll never run out of storage space if you don't have the ability to download all the footage already stored in the camera.
Wow! That's some great footage! The HDR-HC5 is certainly a great camcorder, and that would look stunning on a great big HD television. Looking forward to the review!
