You can't really look past Danny Blanchflower for captain.

However with his complete set of attributes: pace, technique, anticipation, tackling, heading, strength, footwork, passing... together with his brilliant temperament I personally rate him as the best defender I have ever seen. I've seen a lot of Canavaro, Ferdinand, Adams, Nesta etc. but King for me, is as close to the complete footballing defender as there has been in my time.

That he's also a one club man at my club... <3
