Have dealt with heat exhaustion and its not fun. Did about a five mile hike through hilly terrain and didn't realize I was in trouble until the stomach cramps. We were not near any water at the time so the guys I was with set up shelter to get the sun off of me. We were in wooded terrain with lots of leaves on the ground. We removed a patch of leaves to get down to bare soil and it was a lot cooler. Took off my shirt and laid down on the cool soil while drinking water until I vomitted. Fun times
I know you need to cool off in the pond. But, remember there are hazards in the pond. Brain eating amoebas live in warm still water. If you get contaminated amoeba water up your nose, then the amoeba can work its way up the nasal nerve pathway to the brain and totally destroy ones health and frequently brings death in three days. Do a google search on this, and you will see what I am talking about.
Heat exhaustionis not fun. I have had it a couple of times. One thing I found that is helpful to me is to carry some Gatorade mix in the little packs to mix in your water bottle. if you start to feel heat exhaustion comming on mix some up and start sipping on it slowly. It's a good idea to get out of the sun for a while to until you are feeling better.
Same thing happened to me. My father in law my brother in law and I were hiking in CO mtns. had half a nalgene bottle of water and 5 miles left to hike. We had to get our water from a natural stream coming out of the mountain. Best water I ever tasted and it got us threw. After that, I always have Iodine tablets and a water filter in my pack. Good video Kev.
yep ur right it helps your body retain water. Btw im an eagle scout (Boy Scouts) check out some of there books like first-aid if ur gonna hike check that out they have lots of good info
I went on a motorcycle ride a couple of weeks ago. It was about 100 degrees out. Everyone else was wearing black t-shirt or shorts if it was girls. I had a long sleeve white t-shirt. At the beginning of the ride, people thought I was crazy. It the second stop. I took a cold water bottle and poured it over by sleeves. Cooled me right down. I did the same thing before I go back on the bike. It felt like having a air conditioner on me. Later, three of the girls passed out from overheat
It was answered yesterday, but I was going to ask what camera you had. I've done a few youtube videos myself but used a digital camera and not a dedicated camcorder. D10... hmmm interesting. Oh and I'm glad you're Ok!!!
I heat up real easy and stay hot. One of the best things I do is to contineously keep my hat soaked with water. It really helps keep my head and brain cool when in the heat. I even do this when I'm at a fair or outdoor outing. Keeping you outer surface with cool water has saved me many a times.
Ive had heat stroke several times and it isnt pleasant. I always carry rehydrate sachets with me now for that very problem. It allows you to rehydrate quickly!
On the trail you can make a rehyrdation solution using salt and sugar.
how much water did you pack with you? This is one of the reasons I love my 100oz water bladder, even then I also have a quart in my military canteen. Nowdays if I was going on a hike I would have even 2 extra gallons in my goats pack (a nubian dairy goat can easily pack 25 to 30 pounds) for people into wilderness camping a beast of burden will lighten your loadand a female goat in milk will provide you with 1200 callories of fresh clean liquid milk daily from just eating weeds along the way
Um, why didn't you have water bottles at the ready while you were hiking? In that kind of weather, you should be sipping water about every 20 minutes anyway. You can't do that if you don't have a ready clean supply on your person. So why?
I did the same thing a few years back while hiking around Silent Lake. First I was puking right after I chugged back about a half Litre of lake water. Then I was puking out the other end for a day and a half. Glad to see that didn't happen to you Kev! You should post a thread about this on the Forum.
You just got through showing a video not to long about about taking lots of water on your hikes maybe even more than you need sometimes lol. Then you make a video about you getting heat exhaustion. You don't use your own advice?
Hey man nobodys perfect, and like he said anything can happen. What if he decided not to drink that and ended up passing out from heat exhaust, or heat stroke? I could be wrong for thinking this way, but I bet I would have done the same thing.
I deal with extreme heat on a regular basis and its a battle of staying cool and staying hydrated: -Wet Bandana! -Drink TONS of Water / Gatorade / mixture -Stay out of direct sunlight -Keep your movements slow and steady -Sip on water nearly constantly -Watch for signs of dehydration (especially if you stop sweating) -DO NOT PUSH YOURSELF. Stay below your limit. -Expose as much skin as possible to stay cool. -Don't wear heavy or dark clothing. -USE COMMON SENSE
yeah, i didn't want to say that because he's a nice guy and i wouldn't want him to feel uncomfortable or embarrassed in front of the kids but it was a case of poor thinking ahead, and may i be so bold to say pretty irresponsible towards the kids health and safety too.
Also, drinking that H2o like that without precaution displays no self-survial.
Of course, i wouldnt like to have been the one to bring all this up :D
I have zero affinity or desire to learn how to backpack in the woods. My idea of roughing it is the Motel 6. That said, I am prepped in my home and auto, plus my BOB, for a two-year stay, independent of external assistance. Also, we live in the NW, where heat and lack of fresh water are not issues.
Something I was always told by my executive officer " You cannot rehydrate, but you can prehydrate" meaning that you should be chugging water, and gatorade, the like well before you go on the trip. In fact I think it is something like the ratio of 1 liter of water to 20 ounces of carbonation.
Just remember that little phrase and it should help in the future as well. BTW Great vid, I look forward to many many more to come.
at Paris Island in the head they had tons of little posters over every toilet that had a color code of urine. If it was a particular you needed to drink x amounts of water within an hour, obviously the darker color the more water needed. I also but some salt tabs in my water, not too much to make it disgusting, but just enough to get the salt back in. Also do not drink COLD water, lukewarm is better.
nellynell77 and roflpwnedvideos, are both correct. your body does burn calories to heat up cold water, or to cool down warm water. However, a better way to regulate your core temp is not to make your body work harder by burning those caloires. You want to get to the shade, and if possible put a cool shirt, or bandana or the like under the armpits, behind the knees, and on the back of the neck. Also, remember, the body is the best healing agent of all, given time, and liquids it is amazing.
What you want to have happen is for the water to evaporate. As the water evaporates it pulls heat away from you. The problem with it is if it doesn't evaporate quick enough it will trap heat.
What you want is a dry day and wind. What you don't want is a humid day and no wind.
Cotton does work but only in some conditions because it drys so slowly. "Cotton kills", It'll freeze you in the winter and heat you in the summer, in general. Stick with polyester.
good vid man, I can relate to this, being from south Texas, we're right on the equator with temps similar if not higher... humidity is beyond 70% usually, and subtropic temperatures reach past 100F on average.
In oregon here, one must be concerned and aware that most small creeks and streams around here, have beavers in them. They pee n poop in the water... hence the sickness we call Beaver Fever here in Oregon. We dont drink the water if you think there is any type of beaver damn anywhere up stream from you. Most of the time you no idea if you have a beaver damn upstream of you, unless you know the area.
Great Video buddy and Take care now we dont want to come drag you out hehe but great video and Nice waterproff camera there i'm thinking about get one my self is it a Panasonic ?
petervagt - the camera is a canon D10. It films video in .mov format. So I had to buy some conversion software to convert all of the video to .avi so I could edit them with windows movie maker.
The D10 is a 12 megapixel camera, but at 12 megapixel the pictures have noise in them and are not are very crisp. So I set the camera to 8 megapixel. It seems to do better at 8 megapixel instead of 12.
The wrist strap also causes a rattle in the audio.
Cool my first vilm was filmed with a Digital camera and they were pretty good i got the Sanyo xacti CG10 now with Full HD it's a Pretty good and compact camera i got it with me in my EDC and work EDC as a Securrity Guard
sounds like a very dangerous situation. i'm glad you're okay and came across that water. i know exactly what you're talking about regarding chugging water when dehydrated, i've had that happen when over exerting myself.
Cyber128 - When this video was filmed, Texas had been going through a bad drought. We brought water with us, but the smaller creeks where we were supposed to refill at - all of them were dry.
I will probably put together a video of the whole trip.

Your body has to use calories to warm up old water.
However, if you are too hot, cold water can regulate your core temp.
The lukewarm water thing is for survival type stuff...where hydration and calories matter.
