Oh, my heart was razing! My dear whippet got injury from running that fast.. I must say I'm afraid to let her run like she used to.. I know she needs to get that run, but I'm just so scared it will happend again!
How awesome. Whippets have such amazing speed. Ours has been running circles around us since he was a pup. He outruns our Doberman, anyday, but she certainly tried to catch up! :)
Uneven ground, far too close to the car, your begging for an injury to your dog. Stop doing this please, lovely dog and an image of my 1/4 greyhound x 3/4 whippet 'Dita'. Just give him/her 20 mins twice a day of normal exercise, the dog will still run.
@RobbieReineldt you wrote an interesting thing: "Whippets would hate jogging". I have a question. I like running, I usually run from 10 to 20 km in open country, with my Dalmatian dog. Now I'm fancy buying a whippet, because it's such a wonderful creature. In your opinion is it able to run slowly for so many kilometers?
What?! At first I thought it was cute that the owner was riding his bike beside the whippet and he was having fun but then saw the car. The car could have ran him over! That was stupid!! And don't get me started on leash laws! You must have one there. How recklessly irresponsible. Take it to a dog park and let it run.
@hitheresunshine Just because someone does not think like you, doesn't mean they are trolling. If animal control sees this video, I am sure it is breaking some law and the owner of this dog can be charged with animal cruelty or neglect. The dog can at any moment jump in front of the car and get hit, or it could see something it wants to chase after and run away. When you mature a little, you will understand and have more common sense.
I'm not saying driving alongside the dog isn't in poor judgement; I'm saying that the owner and the dog seem to have a mutual trust that allows them to do this.
I'd be interested to see if this violates any laws; but that would be incredibly difficult to determine. You'd need to know the exact location, as laws pertaining to animals differ by locality.
Leash laws ALSO differ by locality. So you can't say that you KNOW they're supposed to have one. You don't know everything.
Perhaps if you were more educated on animal laws, you'd know that they not only differ by country and by state, they differ by CITY, so it's almost impossible for you to know if they HAD to have a leash or not. Not only that, since such laws vary by locality, it's also impossible for you to determine the legality of the actions taken in this video.
Also, whippets have a 270° field of vision, as opposed to our measly 180°, so I doubt the whippet would jump in front of a gargantuan moving object when it is fully aware of the car. I mean really, this dog's not stupid. There's you underestimating the dog. And I doubt the owner would do this unless there were a deep level of understanding and trust between them and the whippet. There's you underestimating the owner.
@hitheresunshine, Someone has to speak for the animals because they can't speak for themselves. It's people that need to stand up for animals that are abused and/or neglected.
Isn't thinking you know what's best for all the animals a little bit egotistical? How about you focus less on the animals who are simply having a great time with their owners and focus more on the animals who truly need help? I volunteer at a greyhound rescue, and trust me, I've seen some terrible things. Dogs whose owners use pesticides to get rid of fleas, dogs who are literally covered in thousands of tics, dogs who hardly weigh anything… Those are the dogs who need a voice.
It bugs me when I see someone commenting on a video who thinks they're being righteous and good, when there are so many other animals who truly need help. Quit being anal and ridiculous and, if you actually want to help animals, DO something. There are tons of rescue organizations you can volunteer at, you can foster a dog, there are so many things you can do to help. Commenting on a video and telling someone that they're a terrible owner doesn't do a damn thing.
Do you really think the whippet would be as stupid as to just run into that car? Jeez, people. Dogs are smarter than that.
This is fantastic footage, though! I wish I could get our whippet out to the dog park more often to run around, but with the sweltering 105+ temperatures lately it's just been out of the question. She does love chasing rabbits, though, so I think lure coursing would be a good match for my girl.
Dude that was super enjoyable to watch. Your dog looks like he is enjoying himself a lot in that video. Good for you for giving him an opportunity to run like that, whippets so rarely get that chance.
fast dog, but this is training the dog to chase cars, which goes without saying is dangerous. I had a dog that used to chase our car as we left the driveway, and he ended up getting hit by a car and it shattered all the bones on the lower half of his body. i agree with the others that using a bike or simply jogging with your pet is a great source of exercise, they dont have to be sprinting to get a workout
@Heathstrub You've obviously never owned a Whippet. Nothing you've said shows an understanding of them. Whippets form very strong bonds with their owners. Totally devoted they are. Thus they won't chase cars unless their owner is in it(like the dog in this video). Also Whippets would hate jogging, they love sprinting as fast as they can in spurts. That's their idea of fun.
@RobbieReineldt You cannot compare a Whippet to a greyhound, they are two different breeds with different personalities and different characteristics. Whippets love to run, fast, and in sprints. They may look similar, and they are both sight hounds, but that's as far as the similarities go. You could not jog or ride a bike as fast as they like to go, nor need to go to keep their muscles in tone.
Dogs that get hit by cars are usual,y as you say, running out into the street chasing something (ie a cat), and completely unaware of the approaching vechile. This dog on the other hand is fully aware of the car he is running beside.
I was of course being sarcastic about your cat playing with yarn being a bad thing. Clearly it's lost on you, because your sense what is appropriate when it comes to animals is pretty messed up.
@hibiscusfreak Why so? I guess the owner watched teh dog closely, and that dog isnt running as fast as the video would like it to seem. Maybe 15-20mph, just look at how the dog is running, its not "dubble suspending" in the strides. IMO, safe!
@trulsvian Your comment is ridiculous. Dogs and cars do not mix well at any speed! If something startles the dog and he panics and turns the wrong way, do I have to tell you what would happen? This is an accident just waiting to happen.
Right, because giving your dog fresh air and exercise is a really stupid thing to do, huh.
Do you really have such a low opinion of that dog's intelligence that you think it would run under the car?
They're in a paddock with nothing around for miles.
I see you like to play with your cat with yarn, that's incredibly unsafe!! It might swallow it and choke, or get it caught round it's neck and asphyxiate. How could you be such a careless pet owner.
@spentfromnz Has nothing to do with the dog's intelligence. You can't tell me you've never heard of dogs darting into the street after another animal or just being startled by something panicking. And this is a sight hound...I don't think I have to say anything else. This is an obviously dangerous practice. And that is not string my cat is playing with. It's a tie from a pair of shorts. I know cats eat string, that's why I don't give him any. :-)
I used to do that with our whippet on a motorbike and when i started to go to fast he would try and bite me.! real competitive, in the end he he got hold of the bike seat and tore it to bits! little shit!I loved him to bits though! the speed they can do is incredible

I'll never forget the day my whippet was finally able to outrun me :
I was then a 26 year old at the peak of physical fitness.
My whippet was about 12 weeks old.
