When the Dead Weather played last year, the bass (which is an EXTREMELY important part of the DW's sound,) was dulled to the point at which it almost wasn't there!

I'm from Wisconsin and do not say douchebag. YYYs have been using keyboards for a while. They never really died - the synth effect did though, until recently which is kind of unfortunate because that effect sounds terrible.  And since they started the YYYs have been described as art-rock or art-punk and not too much has changed in that regard. So I don't really think they jumped the "bandwagon."
