  • Again, I love BJJ. I practice it myself. But if we are talking strictly self defense of which I also practice (Krav Maga) we have to be prepared to fight a guy in a t-shirt. And there is no way your going to choke anyone one out w/ just a t-shirt. In self defense you have to practice simple repetitive actions that work in all situations. BJJ is amazingly affective, but amazingly complicated. Self defense has to be the affective and super simple.

  • Krav Maga all the way!

  • All of u are dumbass fucks that dont shit about fighting escpecially askren what a joke he is the only thing i have to say to prove him wrong is watch mma of any sort

  • Jesus christ, this is not "Ju Jitsu" this is BRAZILIAN JU JITSU - They are totally different things, BJJ came form Japanese Ju Jitsu, which is 100% better and more well rounded.

So sick of "Ju Jitsu" automatically meaning ground fighting and grappling.

  • That's a good team.

  • BJJ is definitely for women. Rape requires the rapist to 'close the distance'. Obviously the girl has to be training for quite a while to know what shes doing.

  • @yuenj01 It not only requires the rapist to "Close the distance", it also require him to enter the victim's guard so to speak. I say any rapist no matter the size, hight or strength is going to have a hard time raping a goo female BJJ purple belt or even a high level blue belt.

  • @kanguesso

    nicely said!

  • I love BJJ, but self defense should never be taught in a gi.

  • @eltiggermalo why not??? the gi resembles clothing, how many times do you get attacked by a butt naked guy? if you have i dont watn to know about it, jeans just like gi pants, hoody just like gi top, you can do the same gi chokes to somebody thats wearing a hoodie, now if there wearing a shirt its still gi top just the shirt might rip, MIGHT, usually just gets stretched but a stretched out shirt is still like gi top. gi is best for self defense, in reality the dudes probably wearing clothes.

  • @eltiggermalo I disagree, the Gi is comparable to clothing which can be used against an attacker.

  • Since that guy was just going to teach the reporter self defense techniques he shouldn't put her in a gi. She wont be competing after the lesson. Just put her in a Tshirt and train no gi jujitsu self defense tactics.

  • Drop into a juji for self-defence? God protect us.

  • Look at it from a more blunt point of view - most of the time the guy will force the girl on to her back so he can get between her legs - he's just put himself in her guard! So it isn't a question of can a girl get the guy down, most of the time he'll get her down, but if she knows Jits and he doesn't...............

  • It would stink if a person that was 15/8ths times larger than you attacked.

  • the things i would do to karen meyers

  • Buscar en youtube giba jiu jitsu brasileño peleas y materiales para televissao(look on youtube Giba Brazilian jiu jitsu fights and materials to televissao)

  • Leverage and technique can be learned in a short time? What a complete load of Bullshit...

  • @Agtren

Totally agree, maybe he says that because hes a purple belt instructing. If it were true than it wouldn't take 10-15 yrs to get a black belt. A person can learn all the moves they will every need in just a couple months. But it takes 10 years to refine their technique. Maybe Royce needs to visit Capital Jiu Jitsu more often.

  • @Agtren yo can learn and feel the diference in a few months thats true. It happen to me also.

  • @kokyjabn Like a first-grader can learn the alphabet and maybe even how to spell a little. I've been doing jiujitsu for a while, and I know that delusions of being a capable grappler tend to come to a beginner rather early. I've been there. This is a rather popular metaphor: a capable grappler isn't someone who can spell a single word, it's someone who can proficiently write prose, or better yet poetry. Beginners don't know the meaning of strong, aggressive attacker fighting everything they do.

  • @Agtren I respect your opinion, a beginer is not a blue belt, that's true... But after trainning like 4 or 6 moth you are able to takedown and control a nonground-skilled person easily. I did it. The diferent againts someone else is clear. At least it was clear to me against other that do not train jujitsu. It doesn't happen in strikking m.a. (I train striking to and a non skilled striker do not feel the diference in 5 moths)

  • @kokyjabn Listen, you are confused. It's normal, because to complete beginners blue belt holders seem like they are pretty good. That's soooo far from the truth.

You can't take down and control a non-ground trained person easily after six months. You've been training in a gym, where your training partners don't want to hurt you.

After you get punched in the face once or twice, you'll probably just cover up and forget all the jiujitsu you learned.

  • @Agtren Against a much larger, very aggressive opponent it's just hopeless at your skill level. I doubt you know how to force another person into the clinch and get your throw if your opponent doesn't want to give you any control over him. Are you any good at wrestling shots?

Fights don't start when you want them to, and you usually get very little warning.

  • @Agtren I'm not being a jerk, I'm giving you a reality check every martial artist needs once in a while. I got plenty of reality checks on my own journey and I expect there to be a lot more.

Keep training, put in the time and the effort and about two years from now, your confidence will become somewhat justified. Until then, just hang in there. Oh yeah, and make sure to compete. That will be another reality check.

  • @Agtren I am happy traininng and it is already justified for that. So we are talking about an agressive and stronger man. Even that, if one of those attack me, and there is no scape. I would use jujitsu, for sure. (and maybe tkd) I have a good shape too thanks to bjj, I am also stronger now and gained a stamina not regular in non trained persons.

  • If we continue with that metaphor about the grappling skill levels then:

    white belt - alphabet

    blue belt - single words

    purple belt - sentences

    brown belt - prose

    black belt - poetry

It's not my metaphor, I read it somewhere. Anyhow, forget the belts, I still don't have any pretty belts even though I can hand many pretty belt holders their butts. Good luck on your journey!

  • lol, i see that a lot of people keep saying the BJJ either is or isn't good on it's own

i honestly think restricting yourself is never good, BJJ is extremely effective but sometimes grounding your opponent isn't an option due to their skill or just circumstances

i'd say anything involving BJJ, good strong and fast hand work and effective non-flashy kicks is a good start, the rest is on the fighter and the fight itself

  • @ShowYourWorking Oh really...guns make you stupid? Keep talking out of your ass dipwad...just because you are too lame to operate a firearm doesn't mean the entire population shares your idiosyncrasies.

  • Don't be suckered into a 10 week "rape prevention" class because all you're doing is wasting your time and money. Even the girls that trained 3+ years are easily overpowered by a Mike Tyson type rapist. Reality is don't be alone in parking structures or hotel corridors etc. and carry a mouse gun of .25 cal as such wrecks the muggers day.

Let the jujitsu instructors get real jobs.

  • SHE HAS A HUGE HEAD

  • So..you want to teach women...throwing techniques...against big guys......geez....

And you can't do this techniques straight away....or, a short amount of time....

try and do these leverage techniques when you are scared and freeze......geez

  • For the love of corn! Those are the ugliest Ogoshi (major hip throw) I've ever seen! Does anyone doing BJJ understand how devistating a throw can be if done correctly?

  • That is a cool room for jiu jitsu. Big open space.. Mat from wall to wall.

  • That's not the trainers voice...

  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu does not automatically translate into an ideal model for womens self defense...its great if she is thrown to the ground but there are more effective methods that address a stand-up scenario...the Judo throw as part of womens self defense, is a waste of time unless the women trains it on a larger man who gives various degrees of resistance.

  • guns that is effective!

  • @masondarko Yeah but it's illegal to walk around with a gun in many places

  • @tigerboyX Wrong, it's legal to carry a firearm in most places. Thank the constitution.

  • I wonder if they do any randori? Static drills aren't much good imo.

  • cont'd.

Unfortunatly that is the trade off, if you want a safe martial art and still practise techniques on a live opponent, you loose the deadliest techniques, if you want it lethal you loose the live opponents practice, so it is a balance. But i believe of all the martial arts bjj is the closest to an effectiv self defense art you can come. I haven't considered MMA since MMA is a mix of arts as the name implies.

  • @shodan78

You have do do something else with BJJ I believe for the streets I do BJJ and Muay Thai BJJ on it's own is rathe risky on the streets trust me do MMA.

  • @403766 well of course, it's obvious but most people don't have the time to go full out on a MMA training program. As the name implies Mixed martial arts it will keep your schedule packed just to prepare for something that most likely never happens. My advice would be practice while you have the time, once you get the techniques it's like riding a bike it's always there with you. that's what i have done now.

  • Most of martial arts have been proven that's why they are called martial art, although unfortunatly most of them have been rendered useless. Judo have become a sport where the point system have decreased its value as a martial art. Bjj which is nothing else than a "dialect" of judo which in turn is "dialect" the old jiu jutsu is basically the same, the difference is that bjj comes from a street background not long ago, similar to judo, the point system is destroying bjj as well.

  • @shodan78 no martial art can guarantee you a safe journey to the mall at night time but in some situations you are prepared and some is better than none right?

  • @iamkris4ever

Yes and no, it's a hard question actually. If you happen to overestimate you capabilities some martialart training can actually be worse cause you might engage since you believe that you might overcome you opponent when you could have fled. In a street confrontation the best training is the mental training, you get that during martial art training some of them any way, so there is no black and white answer to that question, interesting topic though

  • @shodan78 yea the world is so unpredictable

  • I agree with mmtxaz about BJJ being extremely useful to women. Women will often not see their attackers before the attack and will often need to respond after being taken to the ground, BJJ is very effective for that, it is also based on techniques used in Judo and Japanese Jiu Jitsu, so as you can see in the video they practice Judo moves aswell, and is the anchor starting off by saying "latino women instinctively know how to watch their back'? lol

  • kano made judo more efficient, I'm talking about system not a judo wrestlers or jujitsu wrestler?! main thing is the system, and judo is more efficient than jujitsu

  • BJJ has proven to be one of the most efficient way to immobolize person in one to one situation. However, in self-defense psychological prepartion in terms of coarage is more important than physical streangth and technics put togehter.

  • ball of shit, Jiu-Jitsu needs power and techniques not so good as aikidos or judos movements techniques, use aikidos or judos movements techniques in same exercises do movement vit no hand or lags use all body

  • BJJ is much better than aikido. BJJ has been proven, aikido has not.

  • ...been proven? Its just simple to see that aikido more efficiency in technical than any, if you need proven MIKE TISON is better in the world

  • There is no need to be proven, if you can understand and if you can recognize technical movement

  • And you just know history ju jitsu was modified by kano, to be more efficiency

  • And the Gracies took Judo and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and made it even better.

  • and after if Morihesi made aikido

  • That is a completly unscientific mindset. Would you fly in a plane no b one can prove will actually stay in the air. Yes, it does have to be proven. And bJJ has been proven.

  • i do BJJ and boxing i do it simply cuase i like the sport, and i like the fact that if i get taken down i know how to get back up. Problem is if this is all a girl knows it terrible for a defending rape situation. simply because if they end up on the floor that's where she'll be when she gets raped. .Looking for armbars and other sub off the floor is dangerous.. If she takes her attacker down, immediate go for the eyes or bite the neck. SElf defense means inflicting enough damage to run away.

  • @niggabartlebee well that may be right but it still would workd fine if not all the way... jujitsu helps you control the person or the situation...i think most guys would think twice if a girl took them to the ground...i mean no girl period wants to be in that situation but if they are good enough they will have no problems submiting... i know that most guys would shart themselves if a girl took them down its like a red flag flys up and it says o shit...

  • This is horrible. The best thing you can do is to run a away. Those fancy judo techniques are not going to work in real life, especially with all these guns and knives around.

  • If someone has you pinned on the ground, running away is not an option. BJJ is the ideal art for a woman to use to defend herself against a rapist.

  • @mmtxaz Dude i am not so sure that if you're a woman you'd wanna pull guard or have someone who's trying to rape you in your guard. That's way too much of an easy access for the potential rapist. For a women, they should use JJ to avoid getting to the ground in the first place. Or if they find themselves there, they should be looking for the quickest way out.

  • @kanguesso I'm saying that the guard is actually the position the rapist thinks he wants to be in and a woman trained in BJJ can give him a surprise he didn't expect.

  • @mmtxaz Oh no, i do understand perfectly what you're saying. I am just saying that if you're a woman who knows JJ, you don't even want to take a chance to have a man in your guard. They could still pose a GREAT DANGER even though they may not know shit about JJ. They may still do damage by Ground & Pound. I my opinion, a woman even if she knows JJ, she should use it to AVOID getting to her guard in order to Get to a position where she could easily escape and run for her life.

  • @mmtxaz and in return for the surprise she gives him, he stabs her in the eyeball and then cuts off her left nipple. Brilliant.

  • @canofcrass So she should just lay there and get raped?

  • @mmtxaz yes

  • @mmtxaz Rapist would love to have women in their guards

  • @HollowAgito Until he got choked out or got his arm broken. BJJ!

  • wtf is the gi for? it completely destroys the realism factor. the blue matts and comfortable setting don't help either.

  • XIPM3, have you ever done full gi JuiJutsu? The gi adds realism, it doesnt take it away. Grappling in a Gi is equivalent to grappling someone wearing jeans and a jacket.....that's very common. No gi matches are usually just shorts and no top. How often do you have to defend yourself from a pantless and shirtless attacker? Also, if they didn't practice on matts they wouldn't learn because they'd be injured all the time.Just because a boxer fights with gloves on doesnt mean he can't with them off

  • and ur dignity at that. dont bash bjj just because you dont practice it.

  • lol masterpervy would you really think us bjj guys are gonna be unarmed when we think you have a weapon? what makes you think if you have a knife we wont have a knife? what makes you think you can gouge eyes/ bite and we cant. guess what once we have your back and we are feeling angry we will bite ur ear off and what are you gonna do? try to hit us? enjoy getting choked out then once you move ur hands away from ur neck. now we have you sleeping and maybe we should just strip ur cloth.

  • i finally talk to someone with some sense thanks lol... shoot thinking about it if he bites i would prob mount him and knock everyone of his teeth out with elbows until he cant bite, then i would break his arm or tear his shoulder something lol.

  • What cracks me up is take a look @ what the woman n the back r doing. flipping each other. we know how hard it is to flip some one who is skilled these woman are not being trained properly 4 real world attacks. i have nor heard any one speak about the FEAR FACTOR when that take place its a diff. ball game and u wont her to flip the bad guy. this kind of tech. is for the streets. these inst. really don't have a clue about the real streets.

  • All martial arts are too abstract to deal with self-defense specifically, so I always frown at instructors who try to take their abstract technique and pretend like its the same as self-defense.

This guy, however, understands self-defense, and he knows how to teach it, reaching to his technique vocabulary when applicable, and putting it in useful context.

  • ok i watched those videos try those techniques against someone trained in gracie jiu jitsu not brazilian jiu jitsu (which would work), but gracie jiu jitsu which is street self defense rather than sport self defense. see what happens please try it then have someone video the fight and upload it so i can see it hahahaha

  • HAHAHA I shit on gracie jiu jitsu. In street gracie jujitsu useless. Take opponent to ground get shit kicked out of you by multiple attackers , Or get knifed in the ground HAHAHA.

  • no you dont... and how many times really have you had multiple attackers??? come on now rarely ever... and usually you have some ppl with you too.... second in the master cycle rener and ryron gracie show you how to defend a weapon and show you different kinds of strikes and shows you how to take on multiple opponents. IF YOU THINK YOU CAN REALLY WIN AGAINST A GJJ ARTIST I KNOW WHERE THEY ACCEPT CHALLENGES GO TO 3515 Artesia Blvd Torrence, CA try it out!

  • HAHAHAHA Ive had 3 occassions & came out lucky. But then I work as a Bouncer.

And BJJ is CRAP . Fuck Ron Gracie.

I prefer realistic Self Defence Trainbing with street Scenarios , Agression, Disarming Techniques, . BJJ SAtrikes are CRAP.

And Groundfighting in street I bite you & knife you HAHAHA

  • if we were in a fight and you bite me i will break both your arms off o....f...f off i would turn your face into a slaughter house and turn your shoulders completely backwards then you wouldnt be able to function if you tried to pull dirty play with someone who has trained gracie jiu jitsu the bite will hurt temporary, but what i wud do you wud be permanant. thats why you dont do dirty play to someone of bjj cuz ud b in a world of hurt. keep that in mind. i cud do all this within 45 seconds.

  • HAHAHA in your dreams fuckbrain.

Ive studied Knife Fighting and Muay Thai. Dirty play Fuckbrain I could not careless about cutting your throat its a streetfight no rules.

  • what does muay thai have to do with anything good for you... i am proud... and why are you bringing weapons into fighting that is stupid i am done with this conversation thats like saying you pull out a knife then i pull out a gun and shoot you. that is not fighting.

  • You really are a FUCKBRAIN but finally you see my point gun knife stick = Streetfighting. And BJJ = CRAP in streetfight. BJJ only good for Groundfighting last place anyone wants to be in streetfight. HAHAHA Fuck you are a BORING CUNT.

  • you sound like a total idiot- and someone who has no experience fighting whatsoever.

  • Well i dont know where you got this from. I train under rener and ryron gracie affiliated with Gracie Academy I train 5 days a week from 3-4:30, or from 4-5:30 depending my work schedule. if your talking about a street fight then yes i have been in 4 challenge matches where there is no rules besides i cant hit them i jus use the techniques and the longest one has lasted 44 seconds from when the fight hit the ground (no i dont time myself, my friend will time it to show the effectiveness of it).

  • because you make up this nonsense about what you would do if you were in a fight- anyone who has experience fighting, knows that shit can go in any direction- and that you cant predict what will happen until the moment of truth itself. sorry- but a challenge match is not the same as a street fight, where your life will be in danger.

  • You cant predict you are exactly right thats why gracie academy developed this thing called fight simulation drill where it sends you through a bunch of different most common fight situations. Though you may not know whats going happen you can control the fight if you know what your doing. as long as ur fighting on the ground. the whole gracie program is designed for street fightiing scenarios thats the one and only purpose they have to accomplish.

  • part 2 message and yes in a real fight i am going to do the same thing i promise you i will stay two arm lengths away until the right time to shoot in i am not going to take a risk of one blow to the head and knock me out... so yes i would do that... secondly say if the person is aggressive well in the program i learn we learn how to take down on aggressive opponent and conservative opponent... ill give you every possible scenario i can think of....

  • you tell me any fight scenario besides multiple attackers im getting tired of hearing that some old line... so you think of any scenario in a real fight since your so experienced and all and ill give you an answer for it with techniques.

  • As for challenges I will cut up any bjj guy just to prove bjj does not work against experienced knife fighters. Yoiu want fighting arts for the street try Krav Maga & Muay Thai Striking,. Fuck going to the ground . Yes bjj is ok for MMA & sport .

But its not the only effective ground fighting system.

Karo Judo Pariysian Has beaten many of the Gracies.

  • haha thats pretty sad you have to take a weapon to beat them a weapon will beat any art i dont care how trained you are... dude where in the world are you going to be in a situation where someone is going to try to stab you??? come on i highly doubt you live in the streets. and secondly name some of the several ppl of those arts that beat the gracies royce gracie only lost 3 times in his career twice to a catch fighter and once when he was over 40 years old to matt hughes.

  • HAHAHAHAHA

  • My BJJ Instructor has his BB from Royce Graci, and he has a BB In Judo,so he teaches us the throws and takedowns of Judo, and the Ground work of BJJ

  • Fantastic combination. Keep it up. Consider maybe adding some Muay Thai for striking

  • Who are the instructors there and what are their ranks?

I tried to look on their website but not much help. Looking to maybe attend there when I go off to college

  • If you really want to attend a great school you should check into Lloyd Irvin's Martial Arts Academy

6333 Old Branch Avenue, Suite 302

    Camp Springs, MD 20748

    (301) 449-5425

They're arguably the best school in that area.

  • Lloyd does have great students but all of his credentials are B.S. He is not multiple time national Judo Champion and he is not associated with any "BJJ" organization. Lloyds black belt is a big mystery.

He has trained Rhadi Fergeson, but not in Judo.

Don't get me wrong he has great students but it is not traditional Judo or BJJ its all his own. I would really check him out before you go there.

  • lol holy shit I just learned all of this from him in last week's class.

  • I would be loathe to knock judo or say it's weaker than jiu jitsu. Judo is an effective martial art if, say, you are attacked from behind or are trapped in a confined space. This jiu jitsu club does look quite good.

  • confrontational posture hahhaa fucking queer

  • On the street, in a REAL situation, the last place you want to be is on the ground(in all but the rarest of occasions)! A woman has to know where to strike to cause the most pain.

Know where to strike and do so with all your strength and skill.

But, most importantly, have the WILL to inflict pain.

  • Some of these bjj moves look cool when performed, I know that's not what there for but still, they never teach us any of these usefull moves in karate...

  • Meh, they're not showing any BJJ moves except for the shitty arm bar that girl is doing. The throws are Judo throws. Karate doesn't incorporate any ground fighting to the best of my knowledge which pretty much sucks.

  • Actually, judo was developed from an ancient jiu jitsu. The moves and the techniques are the same. The only difference between what we call "judo" or "jiu jitsu" is mostly the style (and, for judo, the rules). Jiu jitsu, specially Brazilian jiu jitsu, focus on real fight situation and considers mostly the ground situation. You have the same armbars and chokes in judo - as I said, the tecnique is common to both,

  • That's true but in Judo most of the dangerous stuff was taken out due to the rules that were set in place. I don't think most Judo practitioners would even know most of the subs that BJJ is known for now because of this. Either way, they both do have their roots in japanese jiu jitsu.

  • See Jigoro Kano (the founder of Judo) didn't want his system to end up as Sport Judo, but Judo does also offer a very effective stand up system to basic self defense against unarmed and armed opponents and it also has a very formidable ground component as well known as Judo Newaza (sorry if I screwed up the name). Sport Judo is just sport, but the submissions in BJJ aren't anything new. They derive from Judo and japanese jiujitsu.

  • He might not have wanted it, but it ended up without the submissions anyway. In the end you just end up with a system known for its throws and nothing else. I never said that the submissions in BJJ were created in BJJ, just that anything really dangerous to one's health was taken out of Judo. I do like Judo though and would like to learn some more of the throws in it to improve my take downs.

  • But the throws are just sport Judo like you would see in the Olympics. The combat form of Judo that has the submissions, chokes, and jointlocks. It's used by the Japanese police as the main hand to hand combat system. They just aren't used in the sport form of the art.

  • I never disputed that. I just stated that Judo is known for its throws and not really anything else. That being said, yes it may have submissions and whatnot, but most people don't think of those when they hear the word Judo. Unfortunate or not, it's true.

  • "just that anything really dangerous to one's health was taken out of Judo"...

except hitting someone with a planet as opposed to hitting them with feet, fists or elbows...

seriously though, it has been tamed over the years, but there are some classes that keep some of the more useful locks/holds in there.

  • Yup, those take downs do hurt I know. That's why I would like to learn them.

  • plus the fact, you don't get bruised knuckles from throwing someone .. which is one thing the police look for 1st thing after a fight.... so I've been told .... err .... by a friend.

  • Haha I gotcha. You also don't get bruised knuckles from choking the shit out of 'em either.

  • yeah, but there's more chance of getting a few bruises as they feebly try to escape by 'hand pecking' you in the eye (I was taught that in a TKD school i used to attend - thought it was BS then, now I know it's BS... if in any doubt, just ask Mr. Rutten) and if you do some throws/take downs well and quickly - they look for all the world like they've fallen over.... (again so I've been told...)

  • A whole entire segment devoted to jiu jitsu techniques, and all the only technique I see, besides the armbar, is a poorly executed ogoshi, Judo throw

  • That throw looks more like a Koshi Guruma than a O-Goshi and they are white belts, what did you spect? xD

  • The women here are giving themselves up to a world of hurt . Grappling is the last thing most women want to do against a large male attacker.. Try eyes, eyes, eyes. Quick kicks to the knees and pressure points above the knees .

  • That isn't gonna stop an agressive man..but a RNC or breaking his arm will...I've been training for right at 17 years and have bounced in biker bars for years..Basic Jiu Jitsu WORKS! All I've ever had to use was basic jiu jitsu even though I kickboxed competively for years...biting, groin kicks, and eye gouges have all been tried but none stopped me from using jiu jitsu. A woman can train boxing all she wants..but physically shes not gonna KO a big strong guy..but she can choke him oiut!

  • just gotta say this

why the heck turn your back to the attacker and the end up on the ground?

your wide open to attacks of other bad guys

  • What if they just stab your ass. Can't they bite you on the ground? What about multiple attackers?

  • I think that is a very good question on the multiple attacker. I think BJJ is one of the best martial arts in the world when u are facing a 1 on 1 situation but I do not think BJJ will be very effective on multiple opponents.

  • I take JJJ and my dojo teaches us that we should do everything in our power to not take the fight to the ground on the "street". it is very easy for a large assailant to overpower a man let alone a woman on the ground. the move that they were doing (ogoshi to a juji-gatame) will not work on a 250 lb man with a knife. my dojo teaches us to use akido (joint locks, arm breaks, ect.). If they tried to do that on the street she would most definitely lose, you need to break somthing to be effective.

  • It all depends on how you use it. Just know that you're not on a mat. And with all due respect to JJJ, I've never been very confident in the standing jointlocks (save maybe one or two).

    Just from my experience.

  • I agree; most street fights should stay on the feet in case of multiple attackers; knifes; and in case you want to flee.

When your on the ground your at a major disadvantage to all of those posibilities. That being said; learning a good ground game can be crucial for finishing fights quickly "if" they go to the ground. johnlafunk pointed out multiple attackers and ground defense make BJJ ineffective.

  • You don't have to knock out an opponent to protect yourself. You jab him twice in the nose, hit to the groin, punch to the throat or hard to the chin and you can RUN. You don't hang around to finish fights with multiple attackers. Also, as a bouncer, you are large, and you're throwing them out, not running for your life. Also, how does basic jiu jitsu handle weapons or multiple attackers. In these drills it is just two people.

  • I use boxing against multiple attackes..but realistically if a guy uses Karate or Kung fu, if he can't beat one guy with it..he certainly isn;t going to beat multiple guys! lol And what if your "jabbing " guy can't outrun his attacker? What if he has a steel rod in his leg or whatever? His jabs aren't gonna stop a big strong guy..not everyone is blessed with heavy hands..but everyone can use jiu jitsu...most of the guys I fought were on meth or drunk..they won't even feel "jabs"

  • BTW, I'm not arguing..but I am sharing REAL world experiences..I'm a big strong guy..but I never had to use much strength, usually just standing guillotines or take the back and standing rear chokes...

  • she said "but do i have to wear one of these gis?" shes already wearing the gi pants you can see it

  • bien ricas las gringas

  • Capital jiu jitsu (bullshit)????!!!! What'da fuck is that???? That's Brasilian Jiu Jitsu!!!

  • 15 years old om my gym there are not many people that are my age often are over 10 years older than me. often when new guys come, for example a guy who was about 25 years old. we started on our feet and he was about 194 cm LONG! but still i threw him over my shoulder and i choked him out from monut in about 25 seconds. c'mon thats a proof isn't it?

  • capital jiu jitsu? is brazilian jiu jitsu you american want to steal all !

  • its the name of the school dumbass...

  • i dont see in no moment he saying brazilian jiu jitsu, only capital jiu jitsu. and you know the powers of the words when you repeat it, if you dont, you have too. and is not notice/new , that the americans steals the inventions or discovers when they can.

  • then why does royce gracie appear later in this news segment

  • Capital Jiu Jitsu is the school name because it's right outside Washington D.C. located in Alexandria, Virginia. The school is a Royce Gracie network gym.

  • not to be contentious, but some might say Brazilian Jiu Jitsu stole it from Japanese Jiu Jitsu... =P

assuming it is not a school name... let the guy create his own style of JJ, just like Gracies did.. i don't see what's the big deal about it...

  • Simply ridicolous! Look my video and you will know why!

  • this is bullshit!!! so a woman is going to flip the rapist to the ground then roll around with him and get him to tap hahahahah bjj is turning into bullshit!!!!

  • yea, ur an idiot, they tap to let the opponent kno there done, in a street fight u wouldnt stop when he tapped, instead u would snap his fucking appendages, ligament, joints. mabey u dont relize it but bjj was made for combat.

  • You're going to be calm enough to actually flip a rapist to the ground? Yeah you can break the joint, but it's hard to get to that point. It's better to do simpler moves like attacking the eyes, throat etc.

  • your correct, attacking the eyes and throat, groin would be your best bet as a female to stop an attacker long enough to get away IF she gets that chance. but most of the time the attacker will sneak up to the woman and throw her to the ground, then pin her. ive never been comfortable on the ground and pictured that the worst place to be until i started training bjj. there are so many ways to inflict pain to the attacker. its all about leverage and takes minimual effort to flip the attacker.

  • You can still attack those areas even when you are on the ground though. Really you just have to use what is available for you and what the position is. Leverage does work though.

  • I agree flipping an attacker especially if he's expierenced in attacking he could probably over power a smaller women but teachng a controlling arm bar would be much more effective such as those found in Aikdo and Hapkido and of course techniques to strike vital body parts to escape

  • A hip throw from a haymaker? Good luck trying to teach that as basic self defence for women. It takes a high level of skill to perfom a move like that in real life. They need to be taught simpler moves for self defence.

  • its unrealistic to think that you can overpower or fend off an opponent 1 1/2 times bigger than yourself. that reporter is full of it and she shouldnt be telling women false information like this.

  • u just dont understand the way bjj works, i have a few females at my gym who are very good and would put a hurting on a man who has no fight skills.

  • Im sure they can, but if you have size and strength on your side, you have one hell of an advantage. I know enough about grappling to know that you can't just hip throw someone a lot bigger/stronger than you just like that. You can't get them in a rear naked choke with out overpowering them first. Just stuff like that... I have no doubts in your skills in BJJ, but you shouldn't try and fight a man 1 1/2 times bigger than you. You should just run!! No ninja skills!!

  • im a pretty strong guy on top of being a Marine. i havent been tapped by a girl YET because i just cant let that happen and yes i just muscle out of. Most girls at me gym are newbies like me. but i kno a girl at my gym that i am 100% positive would tap me and she is about 20 pounds lighter. its all about skill. just look at royce gracie in the old ufc's.

  • You make a good point, I guess its just a matter of how experienced you are in some cases. UFC is different from self defense though, but your right he did tap out slightly bigger opponents who knew nothing about BJJ at the time.

  • Hi, what's up? I train in Brazilian jiu jitsu, and I can tell you for a fact, with the right hand placement, body control, and technique, a way smaller person can always get the RNC on their opponent. Once locked, use their legs to keep the opponent on their side if it's on the ground. if they're standing, they keep their hips to the opponents back and apply force, to keep the opponent from planting their feet for more strength to pull out of the choke.

and Royce Gracie fought huge people.

  • A decent outside boxer could pick an untrained guy 1 1/2 their size apart in a minute or so with ease.

And grappling is even more skill based.

  • what if there's multiple attackers??hehehehe gudluck!!

  • Heh, good luck fighting off multiple opponents, whatever martial art you train.

  • A girl from my last TKD class fought off multiple attackers one night on her way home by punching and kicking a few of them then they all ran away.
