This song brings to mind images of two people in love walking down a dirt road in a light drizzle of rain and smelling honeysuckles. The complete image of a beautiful woman.
I love this song and it always makes me think of the blaxploitation movie House On Skull Mountain. If you never seen it, check it out and you'll see why.
One of the greatest voices of all time. I'd never knew who this artist was, until I was asked to find a christmas song on him. And after listening to his music, I do recognize his voice... Remarkable!!! Mr. Benton and Jackie Wilson were some of the earlier legends (along with Sam Cooke) that structured quality black showmanship with impeccable voices for years to come, and set standards for future inspiring vocal artist to set their sights. I tip my hat off to Mr. Benton for such a splendid job.
I love this song and i remember this song back inthe 70's beautiful song. i never get sick of hearing,it's also reminds me of my first girlfriend.those days where so much easier.

R.I.P Jerry Jines He was my dad and he loved this song so much come check out my youtube to see his memorial vid :( and also to see him play what he loved the most the blues :) and he was a damn good player come check it out
Sometimes you get that one rainstorm when your at home relaxing . I really feel like it's raining everywhere!! And then I play this song just to set the mood right by myself!! Just a couple hours of no cares or worries, no phones, no t.v., just me lol:)........
A #1 hit for Brook Benton on the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 206th #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. It also hit #4 on the Top 40 charts and #2 on the Adult Contemporary charts.
This song gives me the vision of simpler times when rain falling on a tin top roof is the only sound you her when it's storming, and the aroma of Fried Chicken and Pinto Beans float through the house and you are with that wonderful woman that makes all your dreams seem so close to reality. Rain is sexy!
Very nice rendition, but it isn't the original version, is it? Betting this is a live recording or perhaps a remake by Mr. Benton. Classic song by a classy and underrated great. Anyone know the band? That's Cornell Dupree on guitar.
Chris Young recently did a re-make of this on one of his albums. If you have even a little country in ya, I highly recomend checkin that one out as well!
although this may be a classic, DAVID RUFFIN's version is a billion times better in my opinion... much more soul, power, and emphasis in david's... check it out!!! :)
@mrcriollitas no problem sir, brook benton is a great singer in his own right, but david ruffin is a legend who was written off, and he should have more recognition and respect than what is given to him :)
@XxTayWade828xX I just listened to the version by David Ruffin, and though I like that version.
I feel that this version captures the atmosphere of a rainy night in ..... a lot better, I can just picture a rainy night in ..... when I hear this song.
Ps. I like the live version of Tony Joe White which stands in the list at the right side of here very much too!
@XxTayWade828xX: Regarding David Ruffin, no arguments on his greatness from me. I think that "My World Ended (The Moment You Left Me)" is one fhe finest soul performances in history, not just Ruffin himself, but the arrangement and playing, which are unbelieveable in their emotional impact and musicality. The cats in the Motown bands could flat-out play... they had the funk, no question.
Takes me back, slow toe tapping, finger snapping , one can't help but remember, ah those memories of yesteryear. Thanks , played well, into where I am tonight.
Without a doubt one of the most over looked artist of his time. Such a rich mellow sound. I miss those days but the music will always be with us. thanks for the post.
Brook Benton did so many fantastic songs; "Rainy Night in Georgia" is just about everyone's favorite. Who couldn't love this song and that voice! I cannot say enough about his voice. So full of emotion, one really does "feel" this song. Thank you for a great post.
Love this recording. Saw Brook Benton and Tony Joe White do a duet of this song on the old Nashville Network a few years ago. Can you say standing ovation?
@rennyshelton If THAT footage is ever posted on Youtube, my prayers will be answered. What a combination that must have been. Something like god's own cream and coffee, with a spoonful of soul sugar.
This is the one song that if I turn it up loud and just listen, I CANNOT keep from crying. His voice, the music, the story.....It's life, And we just got to play the game!
Tony Joe White originally wrote this and sung it with the pain it's supposed to have, Brook Benton made it famous, and an endless list of people re-covered it. Personally, Randy Crawford sings my favorite version 'cause of how soothing her voice is.
Was Stuck at Ambala Railway Station nearly 3 years back for about 4 hours in heavy downpour going on throughout the night- the iPod shuffled this song at
2 05 AM and the following lines -NEON SIGNS ARE FLASHING,TAXI,CABS AND BUSES PASSING THROUGH THE NIGHT,DISTANT MOANING OF THE TRAINS SEEMS TO PLAY A SAD REFRAIN -TO THE NIGHT -literally came true as these lines pefectally visualized the scenario-the Railway Station ,the late night traffic lights and the Chandigarh -Delhi National Highway
This is my song..This is my life..All over cross the country, try to find warm place, trying find warm love..Ohhh.. İt's raning in night in Georgia , seems it's raining all over the world..İt's musn't stop...Untill to find endless warm love..
Love this song and especially the way Brook does it. His voice is rich. Georgia and rain seems to be the subject of many good songs...now and then. Trisha Yearwood's "Georgia Rain" is good too!
I love this song - when I was a child my mother used to be Brook Benton around the house. This song and The Boll Weevil song stuck out in my memories the most. Ahh..the 70's......
As a little boy growing up in North Philly this song brings back a lot of memories. I was about 8 when this song hit the airwaves. I recall my parents having company over to play pinochle while us children played upstairs. This song was always part of the festivities. Great memories....great post!!
Cornell Dupree is such an incredible guitar player. In my experience, hardly any people (musicians included) are familiar with his playing. He is unbelievably underrated.
@83Abomb66: I've been a fan of Cornell Dupree for many years - I'm a player and even many of the cats don't know about him, which is a real shame. His LP "Teasin': is one of the finest and most unique fusions of R&B, blues and jazz I have ever heard... a neglected classic. And Cornell was a first-call session guy on literally 1000s of recordings up to almost the present day.
I remember the first time I heard this song. It was a rainy night in 1970 and I felt chills , now 40 years later I still feel those chills every time I hear it. Thanks for posting the genius of Tony Jo White sung by the great Brook Benton...as good as it gets!
I've listened to dozens of versons of "A Rainy NIght in Georgia" and I conclude Brook Benton OWNS this song. He succeeds in capturing the feeling/meaning of the lyrics, even a bit better than Tony Joe White, who I will always worship for writing such a beautiful and timeless song.
My dad used to sing this one back in the day (of course ALL dads had that bass in their voices back in the day). You couldn't be a father back then without one.
@tomthefunky: He'd be one of my picks for certain, based on songs like this, and his LP "Teasin'" from around 1974 or so. Dupree, along with Steve Cropper and a very few others, was a master of a hybrid style of lead and rhythm guitar that covered both comps and fills at the same time. You've got to comp chords, or partial chords, and do fills without stepping on the vocalist or interfering with the other instruments. It's a demanding style to do well and musically, but he was a master of it.
Written by Tony Joe White in 1962...it was recorded by Benton in November of 1969...by early 1970 it was # 1 on the soul charts ..and it reached # 4 in Billboard...GREAT SONG!!!
I was 10 years old when this song came out. I remember hearing it on my sister's radio late at night while it was raining outside. Safe and warm in my room, the memories of this song and that time are so sweet and mellow.......
After three years of being such a devoted boyfriend, I found out that she was just another cheater who cared nothing about anyone but herself. You had to have known this girl! She was beautiful with a perfect body to boot.
It was the winter of 1970 and I was on a date with Roselynn Park. This song played on the radio. It seems like yesterday. At the time I really thought that she was the best thing to ever to happen to me. Good thing that I found out what she really was. I have been married to my wife for thirty seven years and I am sure glad that Roselynn faded off into the sunset. Memories!
wowowowowo..........this is my favorate song ever sang by a black man, wow this is just the best.
hope Africa one day will stand tall and proud with itself and her ppl. too much suffering, look in congo the last 5 years 6 million dead thx to the gread of some gove. i am an Eritrean /Canadian
Who could ever dislike this song??? Come on! This has to be one of the best songs I've heard in my life! Why isn't music like this still around! Shame my generation knows nothing of taste and telent of lyrics.
I remember the first time I heard this song, I was 13 and listening to a local am station on my transistor radio. It touched my heart in a way I was too young to understand. In later years it still touches my heart, perhaps more than ever having lived life and suffered the loss of one so close to my heart...
This song always makes me so homesick for my home state and my home town, Savannah. I used to listen to this song when I was in the Marine Corps and stationed far from home.
This man was never given the credit he deserved for his contribution to music. He paved the way for Al Green. I believe that Anthony Hamilton has some of this same flavor
This song brings to mind images of two people in love walking down a dirt road in a light drizzle of rain and smelling honeysuckles. The complete image of a beautiful woman.

His best. It's sad his life/career was so short (alcohol). But....thank god for the recorded history of Brook and all others dead or alive.
THIS IS GREAT!

Tony Joe White is the author of this song. You might have heard of one of his others - Polk Salad Annie.
NOBODY sing it like Brook !

This song always makes me so homesick for my home state and my home town, Savannah. I used to listen to this song when I was in the Marine Corps and stationed far from home.

denidowi, Had to look Tony Joes version up and listen to it. Love the guitar! But the vocal and overall vote is for Bentons original version.

This is a remake, not Brook's original

I believe Mr. Ruffin's version touches the soul more than this one but it's still nice

@TheStrongblackman Sorry I have to disagree, Brook Benton's version Is the best.

This man was never given the credit he deserved for his contribution to music. He paved the way for Al Green. I believe that Anthony Hamilton has some of this same flavor

I know "Georgia on My Mind" is the state song for this location, but I'd say this is a close second
