Lara was a very audacious player, high backlift followed by a drop of the blade. You bring in someone like a Mark Waugh, David Gower or Martin Crowe and these players are more technically correct. However Lara had a hunger for runs unlike many batsmen and it was exciting watching him get them. Though Crowe had the superior first class record of all these batsmen, even Lara, he couldn't quite emulate it in test cricket. Graeme Hick was a perfect example of that.

they seemed so fast because speed is always relative. Protective equipments batsmen height reaction time have improved as happens in all sports. And btw viv averaged 44 against aus and 40 against pak.

jeff was very fast but as bbc profile of him says was erratic and did not used his wrist much and so generated little seam or swing.sounds a lot like tait. Lillee was lively and very skillful but do not forget he was just 5 11 . He will hardly be a great bowler today.

btw in a study done ay wa uni in 79 lillee clocked fastest at 137.ditto gmran. Holding mid 140 only jedd cleared 150 marginally. Admittedly it was after lillees injury but viv faced lillee mostly after the injury.

Old stories ball almost carrying to boundary is a myth. Such things happen because of cracks on the pitch. I have seen a ball easily clearing the inner ring a ball bowled by salil ankola a medium pacer from india in a slow delhi pitch.

By the way when he was just 17 he was hit in the face by Waqar Younis and started bleeding from his nose..He was asked to go out of the ground and get some treatment..He refused, played and took waqar for several boundaries...so please dont say he doesn't have the guts

his stats says it all...also,WI had better bowling attack than indians in 90s which consisted of jokers like dodda ganesh,david johnson,noel daivd,kuruvilla etc. though we had good bowlers like srinath(the only one) and kumble(was not effective abroad in 90s)...Sachin is the clear winner...

I am an Indian and a big fan of Sachin Tendulkar, but Brian Lara is the king. he has always played match winnnng knocks and is more entertaining than scahin in test matches.

also brian lara had to play under a lot more pressure than tendulkar did..most times wen lara went to bat the team wud be 3 down for less than 50 runs...most times with tendulkar, his team had a lot of runs and there were other batsmen in the team.. plus, brian lara had to put up with a lot more pressure from the board (imagine they dropped him for a tour of sri lanka, and he made 43% of the teams runs in the previous series against them)

I love cricket and most of all I love India. However, as both Lara and Sachin will be forever immortalised as legends of the game, there is no real reason to compare them. They are legends, and are champions of cricket for the modern era. Why not just sit back and be entertained :)

Lara's footwork was always impeccable and he is the best technical and beautiful player ever world witnessed. Sachin is only second.

tendulkar is a good player.almost great. but greatness is not measured in statistics; its passion,creativeness,endurance and love of the game .and of all these brian lara possess and more but tendulkar is lacking in endurance,the ability to perform on the highest level at an old age as lara did. now thats great .tendulkar statistically is better but lara is the greatest coz of what he has done for cricket in general.
