@Horseloversrox When a horse is collected, it's head it brought back under to it is vertical to the ground, or close to. This forces the horse to use it's back end as its powerhouse, instead of it using it's not-as-powerful front legs. For jumpers, horses are allowed to raise their heads right before they jump, because if they don't they don't get a proper look at the jump and most often wont jump it.
@heyponypony um.... i didnt even know i had a you tube account until i got your message.... my friends always use my iipod... but i really dont care what you or that other person says cuz i dont even know you... i only care about the video. enough said :) not looking for a fight with random people on you tube. okay? okay. :)
@horsesrmylife54 The riders collect their horses before the next jump, or basically, get them to refocus. Sometimes the horses get a little too excited and don't end up spot-on with their strides and such, resulting in a knocked over fence. So to prevent that, the riders start fresh at a halt and the horses calm down a bit.
Ummm if your a vet, you should know that horses spook at things and sometimes it's just a bad day I'm a 8th grader and can spell better than you. Maybe you should go back to vet school... If you are really a vet.
WTF the last guy ur horses CANT jump it dont force him im a vet and i seesooo many horses coming in with jumping accidents when here horse couldnso the fored them to try and if he can stay on he shouldnt be riding thathigh
I'm actually a bit surprised that the owners of these horses--horses that took years and thousands of dollars to train--would want to do puissance. Although the horses jump willingly, there's such a higher chance for injury at these heights. Torn ligaments and such. The $25,000.00 purse is nothing compared to what these owners have invested in the horses.
for the people who think that these equestrians are bad riders, how do they stay on? would you jump that high? would you trust your horse enough to clear that? if their bad riders, then why are they there? now, think about that for a moment...
I enjoyed this video. This is to show all that horses are very well trained and they can do what they are asked to do. Very nice. Loved it. thanks for sharing this.
What I think is actually funny is that they gave him that crappy little tiny blue ribbon. You get better than that as a 2'6 hunter reserve champion LOL
They did simple changes because the last thing they were thinking about was lead changes. It was more about keeping the fired-up horse calm enough to get to the fence. In this situation, it's all about getting up and over, and doing it without injury.
@myboydusty why is this cruel? horse riders trying to succeed... these horses were made to do this... so why dont you just stop saying shit like that. if you saw the charlie jayne withdrawed because he did what was best. if you could see that the other horses were very nice and could jump high.
HOLY SHIT???!!! LOL thats high as hell. and what breed of horse are these guys? and i hope that they are meant to be doing this kind of work because that seems kinda crule and dangerous, Then again I wouldn't know.
wow i can jump the first jump, if i tried the second red one my horse would buck me off, if i attempted that 7 ft wall my horse would attempt to go through .
david beisel's horse is absolutly amazing, it has the nicest attitude of the horses he rides, and it has very good ground manners. and david is really nice and pleasent to talk to and be around aswell. dont get me wrog though, mclain ward's horse is pretty remarkable also, i just have never been around him,, only david's
@jackandarora bringing the horse back to the walk/trot is a way of collecting them and getting them to listen and focus on the rider. the horses are young and hot so they need to be brought back to calm down and be collected. if they were doing a jumpoff they would not do this.
They seem like they're struggling, but I can see why! Impressive performance! Though I do find it a bit silly that the guy who falls off gets to win, while the guy who actually made it over the wall didn't! :S
Um..just to clear everything up...Its not hunters, and its not even a regular jumper class, and The riders who are in this video are most likely better than any of you (unless youre for example beezie madden or brianne goutal) , and know what's best for their horse. These horses obviously know lead changes, thats out of the question. The riders just didnt want to do them, becuase doing lead changes can get a hot horse excited, and that doesn't mean they can't. Awsome video by the way TBsPlease!
Both of you guys... you can be straight on the correct lead of outside lead (its called counter-canter). Straightness just means the centre of a horse's hind legs id following the centre of its chest... the reason horses get crooked at canter is because their hindquarters are wider than their forelegs so it is easier for inexperienced riders to have the outside hind follow the outside foreleg and think the horse is straight. Hope this cleared some issues up :)
@tulipxo98 Um yes actually.. When your cross cantering you get crooked, obviously you dont know much if you think a horse is straight when on the wrong lead, and if leadchanges aren't so important then why do 90% of horses get them? There supposed to happen for a reason.
@tulipxo98 well excuse me for pointing it out but leadchanges are the BASIC of BASIC , If you cant get leadchanges that just leave more problems for both the horse and rider, im sorry but when your jumping this big and cant get a leadchange what happens? Hmm i dunno YOU GET CROOKED cause the horse is trying to catch up its backend with its front end WHICH makes it harder to get the front end out of the way which potentially causes them to get rails, Also it makes turning difficult
No, all these extremely athletic, talented, and highly trained horses are more than capable of doing perfect lead changes. I do, however, find it funny that you feel qualified to make assumptions about and judge these Grand Prix pairs.
@TBsPlease Im not saying it in a rude way, Im saying like thats the first thing a horse should learn is a lead change cause it makes it easier to do turns if they tend to land on the wrong lead, But i noticed half of them did simple changes... Why? I dont knoww you tell me.
Most GP horses are very hot (e.g. Gael Force) and perhaps on this night the rider determined that simple changes would best encourage him to rock back on his hindquarters and remain on the aids. As this is not a timed event, it is the rider's prerogative and I'm sure they all did right by their horses. There is a reason for the simple changes and rest assured that it is not because they CAN'T do a flying change. Sometimes simple is better.
@JackAndArora there are two categories in what a trained horse needs to do. this applies with everything. There is the must have category, and the it would be nice to have category. so whats in the must have category? going forward, and straight. if your horse isn't doing that, you probably can't do much of anything with him. Now if your horse has acquired these skills, then you can move on to the it would be nice... it would be nice if he did lead changes, but he doesn't have to
@JackAndArora Some horses can get fired up from a flying lead change. Also, as TBsPlease states, using a simple is a great way to calm a horse before reaching the wall. They can rock them back on their hind end. Jumping the wall isn't so much about speed, but about power - and power isn't real power if it's all in the front half of the horse.
i wondered about the simple changes as well. Another thing I saw was at the end David chose to ride the wall seeing how uncollected his horse was. I appreciate these riders and am extremely impressed by them but that last jump confused me. Since it wasn't a timed event, He should have taken the time to calm down his horse and collect him before approaching the wall I heard him yellin and pulling the reigns but he should have tried to collect better in my opinion. Correct me if i am wrong.
@JackAndArora I wondered about that as well before reading the comments below. I also wondered why David didn't try harder to collect his horse at the very end. I have great respect for these riders, but he seemed to be putting himself and his horse in danger. I heard the "hoahs"s, but after he pissed off his horse at 6:25, he should have known to try and collect. please correct me if i am wrong.
@JackAndArora The horses can do lead changes. The riders stop and do simples because they want their horses to calm down before the wall so their horses dont get ahead of them.
@JackAndArora First off they are not hunter riders that care about leads all the time. Second, they care about their horses so what does an extra second or two do when time doesn't matter??? I bet those horses could do a lead change every stride and I don't think you should even be judging how these riders do things unless you're jumping eight feet...but then again 2'6" can look like eight feet to a lot of people...
@skinnytrev If they could do a lead change every step then why wouldn't they? Why would they stop to trot then get the canter again. And im not judging them, i find it funny. And ALSO when they are doing a jump off 2 seconds DOES matter. I dont know why everyone is getting so worked up.. My opinion isn't going to change so tell someone who cares.
@JackAndArora umm wow do you even know what your talking about they are getting there changes right befor they bring them down to a walk to regain composure hahaha thats whats "funny"
@JackAndArora They had their correct leads before they brought them down to a trot/walk. They slowed their horses down so that they could collect themselves and their horses. Plus most of the horses are still somewhat young, im saying their babies but they arnt push button horses either.
@JackAndArora to these horses flying lead changes are like breathing, the riders do it to calm and collect their horses so they dont run and crash into the jump...jeesh
Painfull looking jump (when Macklain jumped the 7 foot brick) take off was pretty good so was 2 point but the horse struggled and then they had a hard landing. But thaat was really good footage. I LOVE MACKLAIN WARD. i watch him every year at devon . just saying hahha. well good video(:

I bet those horses could do a lead change every stride and I don't think you should even be judging how these riders do things unless you're jumping eight feet...but then again 2'6" can look like eight feet to a lot of people...

@skinnytrev If they could do a lead change every step then why wouldn't they? Why would they stop to trot then get the canter again. And im not judging them, i find it funny. And ALSO when they are doing a jump off 2 seconds DOES matter. I dont know why everyone is getting so worked up.. My opinion isn't going to change so tell someone who cares.

@JackAndArora umm wow do you even know what your talking about they are getting there changes right befor they bring them down to a walk to regain composure hahaha thats whats "funny"
hunterhorsegirl94 8 months ago
@hunterhorsegirl94 Thats called a simple change... Not considered a leadchange.
JackAndArora 8 months ago
@JackAndArora They had their correct leads before they brought them down to a trot/walk. They slowed their horses down so that they could collect themselves and their horses. Plus most of the horses are still somewhat young, im saying their babies but they arnt push button horses either.

@JackAndArora
the onl reason the horses cant get lead changes are because the people aren't correcting them they need to practice lead changes.

@JackAndArora
Your comment made me laugh, too bad so many people felt the need to take it so close to heart and defend it like a personal attack lol.
Slaughter4543 7 months ago
@JackAndArora the horse actually did do 2 flying changes if you watch..
hlseffigy 5 months ago
@hlseffigy I did watch, the whole thing actually. I know they did two so why didnt they so the other leadchanges?
JackAndArora 5 months ago
@JackAndArora to these horses flying lead changes are like breathing, the riders do it to calm and collect their horses so they dont run and crash into the jump...jeesh
