@drumrnva Well, just because he talks about the shells and goes into detail about them doesn't necessarily mean he would be able to find that sound on his own knowledge of drums. He said his drum tech finds out what he may like in terms of shells, size, etc. He just knows what he likes to hear.

if you listen to the first DT album you see that they wanted to make crazy riffs with sick rythms, crazy harmonies. not really 40 min songs. the songs were long because they were crazy. now DT does it all wrong. 20 min songs with nothing on them arrrg
Try opening your ears. I think they might be blocked by clumps of stereotypical mainstream ideas.
Just enjoy the fucking music. Everytime I listen to Dream Theater, their style makes me wanna get on the drums. Listen to their style and not their skills.
the complexity of everything they colaborate are far, FAR better then their first album. octavarium was the best song in terms of complexity interms of lyricism and overall taste. you have listened to that right? stop making retarded comments i realize skill comes with time and you don't so everything you have ever gotten bettter at is just going to decay into nothing?
for me the technical things are the ability to play fast, know how to master the instrument... unfortunatly that's the only thing dream theater is doing in the last albuns
This is why I can't stand music snobs who write off DT just because they have long-winded music and solo a lot. Big fucking deal, they make unbelievably astounding music.
"I just love to get up there and beat the crap out of stuff."
(1:18-1:20) I AM!! I use a Ddrum Defiant 6 piece double bass drum set with 7 Zildjian cymbals (2 A Customs, 1 ZHT and the rest ZBT). I like using the Vic Firth Steve Gadd Signature sticks wooden tips oh yeah! haha
same with mars volta, and thomas prigden=watch this space, he's only in his 20's and an amazing drummer also, went to berklee also, where danny carey was one of his teachers..
Being technical, as far as gear is concerned, has nothihg to do with talent. However, I'm shocked that someone like him isn't as technical as he is talented. DT kicks ass...

well, maybe you should listen to the whole thing and just not the drums

Thta's pretty much what you're doing.
All you listen to is their technical things and you shouldn't judge songs by their lengths.

explain to me what is the techical things
bahbuhbih 2 years ago
I should be the one asking you, because you're criticizing them for having "20 min songs with nothing on them."
As you said before, technical things are "sick rhythms, crazy harmonies," and that's all you're listening for, which you shouldn't.
goldenfinger2000 2 years ago 3

bahbuhbih 2 years ago
And now you're not making any sense. On the first comment, you said you liked the "sick rhythms" and "crazy harmonies" which are "techincal things."
So now you're saying "that's the only thing dream theater is doing in the last albums" Which means that they ARE doing what you like.
So... What the fuck??
