I love watching this girl! I lover her little stories...people from this age are so insightful in such a delightfully simple way :) And its wonderful that she's so active! I want to be up and about when I up in age!
should I live into my 90s, I want to be just like Clara. I love her attitude and the recipes are fantastic! I made the pizza a while ago and it was probably the best I've ever had, hands down.
The way she cuts is the way I cut for a very long time. Now I remember I learned it from grandma. No need for a cutting board. I've finally gotten used to doing it the "proper" way.
I found a diamond in the rough, I truly adore this young lady.....Geesh she reminds me of my grandma (Honey), so sweet but took no mess.... Nana Clara's cooking tips and wisdom are worth their weight in gold, true gems. I will certainly utilize all in the days to come. Thank You!
Clara, you have helped me to see that I can make it on a whole lot less. Thanks for your teaching. It may get bad like before, but in a different way, but I will feel like we can still eat.
this isnt the traditional asian egg drop i was looking for however.. it looks yummy and will be going into the menu. My grandmother taught me how to cook and to date, the best recipe book I have is the one she gave me from pre WW2. Clara is great !!
I love to eat simply and believe if we all ate what people of your generation ate that the world would be much more healthy. I enjoy your stories and appreciate them very much. You are such an inspiration, Thank you!
I wish I lived close to you. I would come over and mow your lawn or something. :)
Mrs. Clara, I must say that I think you are a wonderful lady and a true inspiration. Thank you for sharing your delicious recipies with all of us, they remind me so much of my grandmother's cooking. We have tried your recipie for pasta with peas, and your meat with olive oil and lemon juice. Everyone at our table loved it. Today we are making your bread recipie and I am very excited about it. I look forward to trying many more recipies and listening to the stories you tell.
I've made Clara's egg drop soup several times and it has always turned out delicious. Depression Era cooking was simple, economical and nutritious, and with the economy as bad as it looks like it's going to stay for a long while, all those old recipes are new again...
When I was first married we were very poor, I was pregnant and my husband and cousin went to Albertons and dug onions and potatoes out of the dumpster, we ate potatoes and onions about 20 different ways for a couple of month. Dumpster diving? yep! not all bad, people throw so much away!
Love you Clara! You remind me of my own Gramma who is no longer living... I love your can-do spirit... and all the widsom and anecdotal things you share... God bless you!
@AlejandroGreat1 r u dumb? Back in the days photo was a luxury, WTF did you think they plastered their faces full of photos on FB? Of course in the pics they will look happy, they are posing aren't they?
super food, should be all worls schools ,clara is keepinf with mediterranean diet, great lady great cook,healthyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.....you re what you eat, live long......
I don't know which is more entertaining....listening to her teach me how to be a resourceful cook, or listening to the stories from back in the day. Ms. Clara is not only interesting, but educational.
Watching Clara reminds me of my mom & her sisters. At some point a chicken would have been cooked, maybe for a Sunday meal & the broth saved for other meals like this. My aunt would finish the broth (same vegetables) with dumplings & my other aunt made toast from the oven. In our throwaway society we've lost what the depression taught us, to value what we do have. Notice Clara's kitchen, kitchen implements from the 50's in her drawers, old reliable radio, why throw away what still works?
My mom was raised in the depression, I was raised on this food for the most part, and lots of beans...she made tons of baking powder biscuits, and corn bread...Tons of cookies, vats of cookies...Potatoes, fried with onions, hamburger, never hot dogs, as I remember...hot dogs were ate as hot dogs...Memories...
hmmm...a similar recipe was past down to me and I'm hispanic. I guess these recipes are universal b/c of the era. :) I love all of your recipes Clara. They remind me of traditional family values and customs my grandmother past unto me. I still use a percolator to brew my coffee and it's delicious.
that looks truly like depression food, no offense. But instead of boiling it, why not fry it all? Fry up scrambled eggs with onions and potatoes with some cheese on top? Then put it on toast?
When you boil it, it looks disgusting. real egg drop soup is with a chicken broth (use cubes). I can't imagine cheese with egg drop soup. Maybe you have forgotten the recipe?
@YTSparty Boiling keeps the nutrients in. At that time the nutrients were necessary. The final product look good though. Also chicken would be really expensive to have.
NO,, you have forgotten the very meaning of the 'Depression' and what it meant, and how it impacted people.
Clara has the recipe just fine, you can do it you way but, then it wouldn't be A) Dictated by the Depression B) You'd be nice and comfy C) You don't appreciate what the Depression meant..
@YTSparty what a weird comment. I really doubt she has forgotten anything. Yeah, fry everything and it will lose its charm. It'd look like ordinary american crappy food.
@YTSparty - soup has always been the best budget friendly food ever. one potato, a few eggs, an onion on a piece of bread does fill, but not as much as the broth from a soup combined with all those ingredients. water fills you up and makes you feel less hungry. (dieting trick) the same ingredients without a soup would feed maybe two or three. as a soup you can easily feed double or more. and it doesnt look disgusting boiled, its just a different style of cooking.
She reminds me of my dear 94 year old mother in law whom I adore. I am going to call her. Thanks for your videos. You remind us all during these tough times, that there is no need to feel deprived.
It is so funny that people would offer her suggestions on what to do, like how to cut or when to put the olive oil in. I'm thinking she has done this enough times to be sure of whats going to happen next, lol. But all the young whippersnappers are making comments about that....lol.
@ReinaJoanna My grandma did that too, I'm guessing it helps things to cook better and prevents them from overcooking. It tastes really good when you do it like that :)
It's great watching you cook, and I love your stories.
But for the love of god, please put things down before you cut them! You keep cutting toward your hands or your fingers. One of these days you will slice a finger off or gash your palm open.
This is real cooking, not that fancy shmancy stuff.
Cooking should be about family and memories, these combined with foods that require small but flavorful foods set cooking to an entire new level after the depression.
Don't get me wrong, that fancy stuff is pretty impressive but you just can't beat a meal served like this.
I have always wondered what people used to eat during the depression. Now, thanks to Clara, I know. I have tried several of these wonderful meals and passed the recipes on to friends. To watch Clara's video is an added treat. She seams like such a wonderful person. I know her family is so proud of her. Just one more thing. Clara can NOT be in her 90's. You put a big smile on my face every time I watch you. God bless you, Clara.
Clara, thank you for sharing your amazing outlook on life, you truly are a perfect example of grace and kindness and we are all better people for getting to watch you :)
This is very inspirational. Whoever thought of this (I am assuming a new media influenced grandchild) seriously had the mind to recognize such inspiration and skill to capture it. Great job.
A lot of your cooking methods remind me of how people cook in Dominican Republic (where i live). We don't use a lot of 'modern' cooking tools like rice cookers or coffee machines. We just use our big ol' pots and what not.
My grandma doesn't believe in throwing away food either. She uses up every last bit.
I now have a new, super cheap recipe to try. For those of us who don't have a lot of money to spend on groceries, we should definitely take note on how to make meals that are super cheap and nutritious.
Not the most expensive, actually. There are worse. Olive Oil is great. You can buy it for a reasonable price, and it's far too healthy for you to discount. Unless you deep fry things in it, a bottle can last you for a long time.
for some reason, when i was watching this vid, i sorta smell the food smell, i didnt know if there's someone cooking cuz its 12:00am i guess no one would cook now tho. weird.
I from Sicily but now I live in Virginia. My nonna used to make this for me all the time. Watching you cook this wonderful dish made me cry. Thank you for posting this video... sei bellisima signora Clara! Ti voglio bene.
Clara reminds me of my Italian Nana -- very similar cooking style. This is not just educational history on the Great Depression -- many Americans may find this ESSENTIAL knowledge in the Current Depression!! Luv you Nana Clara.
People who lived through the Great Depression usually had unclogged arteries and live to be very old, because they didn't have so much fat and sugar consumption. This dear old lady, what a gem. Although the soup looked awful, I'm sure it tasted nice!
I love you clara .. your stories are priceless, I always leave your videos with a new mindset . .I am more greatful, I am kinder ... your videos are great!
instead of using those fancy and hard to cook chicken or vegetable stocks, she just used water, salt and pepper. sure beats those Rachel ray or Martha Stewart recipes.
My Grandma said after watching this her family must have been "rich" that the "poor" rarely seen potatoes as they were too expensive. My Grandma said it was beans (Navy, Pintos) at every meal including breakfast.
It seems that all elders love telling stories. Even though they are usually off topic, they are usually funny or interesting. Like the snake in the envelope, haha. Thank you for your recipes, I love them and I change them around to my preference, and thank you for the stories :)
This is something that we all should know. If there is ever a food shortage in the world, this will help you survive. And don't think it could not happen to North America. We are such spolied little brats now, a very large amount of us would not survive.
crazy how certain foods can bring up memories. also, apparently more than 50% of your memory has to do with your sense of smell, and a lot of your taste has to do with smell as well. I'm sure it doesn't go that deep, but it's food for thought. Nice little lady, ain't she.
Clara, I love all your old utensils you still have and use. You have no need for a new modern kitchen...We are spoiled in this country. You inspire me and others...Keep up the good work. God Bless you.
Is Clara from an Italian background? I'm in Australia and my Grandmother says that pasta was not available to buy then. I suppose the US was more multicultural at that time...
Thumbs up...way up for Ms. Clara!

Clara reminds me of my Italian Nana -- very similar cooking style. This is not just educational history on the Great Depression -- many Americans may find this ESSENTIAL knowledge in the Current Depression!! Luv you Nana Clara.

@ettermann No, but we are in the Great Recession. It's very hard for a lot of people right now.

People who lived through the Great Depression usually had unclogged arteries and live to be very old, because they didn't have so much fat and sugar consumption. This dear old lady, what a gem. Although the soup looked awful, I'm sure it tasted nice!

@TheDelicatedee I couldn't agree more with you. It seems a lot of people worldwide feel the same about the simple old days.

instead of using those fancy and hard to cook chicken or vegetable stocks, she just used water, salt and pepper. sure beats those Rachel ray or Martha Stewart recipes.

Finally a video blog worth watching. I'm tired of hearing teenager amped up on too much Rockstar while saying a bunch about things that don't matter.
Now this, this is real life people, in case you forgot.

crazy how certain foods can bring up memories. also, apparently more than 50% of your memory has to do with your sense of smell, and a lot of your taste has to do with smell as well. I'm sure it doesn't go that deep, but it's food for thought. Nice little lady, ain't she.

Is Clara from an Italian background? I'm in Australia and my Grandmother says that pasta was not available to buy then. I suppose the US was more multicultural at that time...
