What beautiful memories! Also these are the first words I learned, during my first year at secondary school, even before I knew that Oh Danny Boy existed as well . The headmaster was also the music master, and in the afternoon period, here in the tropics, he would have us singing it,and at the end we would all ,but sung ourselves to sleep. There is also an Anglican (Cof E) hymn which is sung to this tune.
Many thanks for your reply .It is a little bit sad to think of all those talanted musicians not playing any more .I myself was part of a junior orchestra many years ago and although i left it in 1974 i still keep playing ,although many or a lot of my former players have alas given it up.Music can be a great way to express oneself or just for sheer pleasure.
i have a tape recording of the Nazareth house ceili band released in 1968 with this song and others .I just recently converted it on to my mp3.Do you know of this band from Derry and are any of the members still playing,as they would all have been school children at the time of the recording.
@oilitreacht1 No...is the simple answer. All the members would have married or gone from Derry by now. The Nazareth House in Derry is a Nursing home for the elderly now.
We also sang this, in the 1960s, in elementary school in Dallas, Texas. My family is Irish on both sides, and it really comes out when I sing. I hope it''s peaceful, now, as the song implies.
Further comment on my teacher of old. This was so long ago that I got the name wrong. Not Ms Cochran but Ms Gogarty. She taught us many beautiful Irish songs, but we always sang the Derry air every week as I remember it. Thanks again for your great videos. Regards.
Thank you Maureen. I too learned this version from our teacher Ms Cochran more than 50 years ago. I´m know we drove her to tears, but we did always regard this song as the national anthem in Limavady. I´ve been away for many many years and still do.
55 years ago Mr Gabriel our Music Master at school taught us this for our school concert. I have remembered it ever since. Danny Boy is great but this is better!!
Ireland must be a great place and the Irish seem to love it whereever they are....listen to Galvay Bay and you will now they do. Also if you meet an Irishman called Brian and his family, you will now why they are such great people!!
Ireland is majestic , it is a land only dreams are made of and sure listening to Maureen Hegarty (whom I have listened to all my life) It only makes it heaven!
I learned this song from my 4th grade teacher in Pittsburgh and have sung it many times even at the Miss Irish Rose contest. I love it. Thank you so much for posting. You truely have a gift.
I learned this when I was about 11/12 yrs old at school. we would stand with our hands clasped and sing our hearts out. I loved it. Unfortunately after 'the golden daffodillies that came in spring to set the world aglow' I have no recollection of the rest of the song. Pretty sad really, especially when I felt my heart swell at the sheer pleasure it gave me just to sing it..................
I sat with my 85 year old father last night. He told me a long and meandering tale. During WW2 a guy serving with him in Burma would recite the words of a poem beginning "In Derry Vale, beside the singing river". Years later, my dad wove the first three lines into the opening of a Burns Supper address ("Auld Scotia").
As we sat last night he dug out his "Auld Scotia" script and asked me if I could find out about this poem. He will be knocked over by this song.
Thank you so much for telling me this. It makes me happy when a song I sing connects with someones memories. I learned this song when I was at primary school quite a few years ago. Most people know the words of Danny Boy to this air. My fond regards to your father. Maureen

@SirJamesBloodfang
sure Danny boy is the British Version
again they have to steal everything we have even our music!
deirdrepaddy 2 years ago
@deirdrepaddy If Wikipedia can be trusted then it sems that another Brit, W.G. Rothery, was also responsible for the lyrics of In Derry Vale!!!!

Fred Weatherly published Danny Boy in 1913.

Yes, I have the music. I also have the music of In Dery Vale - words by W.G. Rothery. this was copyrighted in 1926 by Novello and Co. Ltd.
maureenderry 4 years ago
I doubt if the lyrics are older than Danny Boy, I remember my sister singing this song away back in the late 1940s.
lorgain2 4 years ago
Beautiful. These words are very nice and I assume maybe even older than the Danny Boy words.
