hi everybody my first time buying a knife from the internet and im not sure who to got to can anyone help me out im a bit warry of putting in my bank details on an unknown site :S ?
I was glad to hear you call it a "fuller" and dispell with the urban myths about them. Then I was dissapointed when you incorrectly defined it's purpose. The purpose of a fuller is to provide lateral flexibility. It prevents the steel from "stacking" along the stress line when it's flexed which can lead to micro-fractures. These small fractures can lead to blade failure. The fuller allows the tortional stress to be distributed across a larger surface area thus preventing "stacking".
i have this model, I sharpen with a 25 º Lansky, but I can not make this sharp as a razor blade. Is because it is a carbon steel ?. when I bought it, I almost came unsharpened.
@0rgazman Many knives are made of cabon steel and are hair popping sharp. You might try checking your process. Is the blade clamped firmly or is it allowed to wiggle when sharpening? With a blade of this length you should clamp at the 1/3rd and then again at the 2/3rd point rather than doing all in one pass. Do you go through at least 3 grades of hones before finishing? Do you clean the hones? Do you check the edge with an eye loupe to see if the angle is consistent on both sides. Do you strop?
@0rgazman@0rgazman Proper sharpening angle for this knife should be between 15 & 17 degrees....I'm surprised Mr. knife expert didn't mention that..I have several Ka-Bars and they will shave the hair off your arm... I am not a big Fan of the new version of this knife. KA-Bar changed steel a few years ago and it wasn't for the better...Find a pre 1970 version if you can..They were made from D2...Far superior to the 1085 they are using now. Forget the serrated versions. They were a marketing ploy
@razv21able In my opinion, I would go for the Ka-Bar for defense, combat, fighting type of use and the Gerber for survival, chopping, prying, digging type of use. With that said, neither is limited to those functions and can surely perform other functions well. However I see those categories as the strength areas for each knife.
@Nunchuckemo1 It is actually a Full length Tang. The difference between that and a "Full tang" knife being that the tang is not the width of the handle. a "Full Length Tang" by definition is a tang that is an extension of the blade material that passes all the way through the grip. I have also heard people refer to them as Rat-Tail tangs, though this is incorrect, because a Rat tail is a piece of thin round metal welded to the blade for a handle. Not the case in these knives.
@Nunchuckemo1 Not a Problem. It was an honest one. Afterall, the whole point of enthusiests of knives, firearms, cars, sports, ect.. is to help each other out and exchange ideas. I'm sure somewhere along the line you would probably know something that I did not. Cheers.
@TroopAirsoft None, one was made for the ARMY and the other for the USMC. I was in the ARMY but when I bought mine they only had the USMC, they also have a NAVY version that's exactly the same.
I was in the Marine Corps and I used both the full sized knife and the smaller sized version. I actually prefer the smaller one just for every day use but the full size version is definitely good to have in a hand to hand combat situation.
I bought a full size KaBar a few years ago, and it was scary sharp out of the box (as every knife should be) and it is one of the best knives I ever bought. For $50 you can't beat it
I have this knife and I really like it. Your handle seems a bit more..polished than mine does. Mine looks darker brown and I'm just wondering; in darker lighting is the handle still shiny?
@mohan4644 The one in the video was out of inventory, so it was unused. Yours has had the oil from your hand get onto it as well as dirt and the patina of age has begun. That would explain the difference. If you ever see an old Ka-bar at a knife show you see the dark brown, dull patina on the handle and you know it has seen a few seasons.
tbh i dont like my kabar, i took it for some very light woodwork and i got a chip in the blade (Probably my own fault). But the knife was also very dull out of box and the edge was not in center and was a bitch to resharpen with a edge pro, tho it is a pretty cheap knife. But its not what i heard about the knife nor what i expected, but its made for killing, and i have a hard time to belive that it wouldnt do that task damn well. This is just my opinion, good for you if you happend to love it :P
@logueybear It was a PAIN, I could barely use the edge pro bcuz of the bad edge, and it took well over an hour, its a little better now but far from the way i want it, if its to hard i would take it to a knife shop to have a look at the edge.
@logueybear No probs, lets just say the knife has potential but no1 should expect wonders from it out of the box, just make sure to keep your tip like a needle and you got a great killer ;)
@AirJordanNate I don't mean to be facetious, but DUDE, come on. lol. This knife is the favorite of the United States MARINE CORPS - the toughest, arguably the most elite fighting force in the USA, if not all of the Americas and the rest of the World. It will go with you to the ends of the earth, man.
@AirJordanNate I can see what you mean by that. A lot of USMC Knife copies/modified configurations use a different type of steel (1095 cro-van) that the scientists who created them only THINK would be a tougher and better steel than the original Ka-bar USMC knife. But I think 1095 cro-van has got em' all beat, man. That's just my opinion, though. If you got this knife in the video, then you made a great choice.
@BenJamminDiamond You don't "have to" as in absolutely must. Dry it off when it gets wet for sure. However a light coat of oil never did any harm and is just a good idea.
On the diving question I know he says yes BUT. The knife has a leather handle and it will swell like all leather. Also if diving in salt water that will worsen the problem, and make the leather break down faster.
i have two questions for you guys, so my first question is where can i buy one of these?and my second question is how much does it cost thenk you i will be sure to subscribe to you.
LMAO...Ka-Bar is not made by Ka-bar Ka-Bar is a brand that Cutco makes for the military, to include all Navy SEAL knifes, Airborn and Airforce along with the most famous USMC Ka-Bar
@TehGardenerer yes i use the kabar sheath as a strop for all my knives it works well but not perfect.
@MrJtl2299 the full size kabar is a great Budget survival knife but i think it would fail as a thrower due to the weight and balance(but ive never thrown mine this is just opinion)
Hey, I have 2 quick questions. Do you guys have a full sized USMC Ka-Bar, and also would one of these knives be good for use as a survival / throwing knife?

@samb7771 I don't think they are standard issue, as my friend who was looking at joining told me that he was looking at buying his own. But many marines probably purchase one. I mean, why not own a knife that can kill a bear?
@whitethronebooks Blood groove is misleading and makes you think it's a wicked cool killing knife that needs a place for the blood to flow. I don't think it's wrong for them to do this, I say sell sell sell, and if some idiot gets his jollies thinking it IS a blood groove, well, more power to Ka-Bar.
Hi there, I got some question enquiry - Is there any knife quality difference made by different countries ? Most ka bar knife I have seen is made in taiwan so I'm not sure what the quality is like.
@exaggerating Ka-Bar keeps theor quality control pretty consistent across all manufacturing locations. As long as the process and procedures are maintained, it doesn't matter where the bknife is made.
Does the 1095 steel hold and edge like AUS 6 or AUS 8. I saw the Ka-Bar warehouse this summer in Olean, New York. Great review. I might actually buy this knife.
I have a Coldsteel SRK AUS 8 never been used with slight sheath wear on the finish I would be interested in trading for an equal interesting knife. If anyone is interested leave me a message on my page.I dont mind if its been used as long as its not worn out or broken.
to all you people out there i have the same knife my uncle was in the war and i found it today when i was cleaning my house up with some more knife i am going to put up a vid of soon so see my channel for the vid soon and cheeck out some of my other vids to
Removing material, no matter what shape it is, will never stiffen the blade. Stiffness is increased by increasing the area moment of inertia. Basically, this means adding material further from the centerline. The blood groove actually weakens the blade, albeit by an inconsequential ammount
how do you sharpen this knife? i have a crkt m16 14 le with a black blade and i dont want to sharpen it because im afraid to mess up the black. and thanks for this review i just ordered the knife.
I like these knives, but from the factory they aren't nearly as sharp as many of the other manufacturer's knives. I was actually disappointed by the quality of the edge. About 20 minutes of work and I had it scary sharp, the steel itself is excellent. Ka-Bar needs to get up to speed with factory sharpening.
isn't the blade blued like a gun? i read it somewhere. and if so does it make the knife harder to maintain? or is there no diffrence between a gun blue knife and a regular blade?
isn't the blade blued like a gun? i read it somewhere. and if so does it make the knife harder to maintain? or is there no diffrence between a gun blue knife and a regular blade?
@RCaseProductions Gun bluing is an electrochemical reaction and is not what is on this or any other knife blade that I know of. The black coating seen on knives is often TiNi (Titanium Nitride) or some epoxy powder coat or vapor deposition process which is for the purpose of protecting the blade from corrosion or reducing glare and friction and actually makes it easier to maintain, not harder. Which of these processes is specifically used on the Ka Bar I can't say, but they are all similar.
Hey, im thinking about getting this knife but in the 7 inch, should i get the one with a leather handle or the krayton g handle, i will use it for just utility use and camping?? also, should i get the kydex sheath?
@KasinH Because that would make it a double edged knife and therefore illegal in many areas and thus hurt sales. If someone really wanted to they could sharpen the swedge themself.
@KasinH Also, one note is that the USMC KA-BAR is designed more for stabbing than slashing. Not saying it can't be used for slashing, but notice when he talks about the pointed end. Marines also use them as bayonets on there assault rifles.
everytime I use my ka bar I love it more and more. I've got big hands so it fits my hand very well. The entire blade is useful in it's own way. I have heard some have broken the blade, at the handle, by prying into stuff. I have enough sense to use the right tool for the job, so This is a non-issue for me.
i have the original issuied usmc used by my granddad. but it is origanial and in wonderfull condition. the sheath quality is not as great however.. the stiching came apart on me and instead of being studed togeter it had utility staples... the first 2 of which came apart and i had to replace
hey, does anyone know if a regular USMC KA BAR can be sharpened with a diamond sharpener? i know the ones made with D2 steel have to be sharpened by one, but can a regular be? mine just doesnt seem to be working. thanks!
@radioguy55 should work. I have a stone and a diamond sharpener and use both. I always try to use a piece of ceramic or the top of a car window to finish off the job. Sure you know this, but be careful to follow the grind of the blade
I just bought the full size for my grandpa today for Fathers day. He said that he used to sharpen the one that he had in Vietnam on his Combat boots. Great review, BTW

I don't think it's wrong for them to do this, I say sell sell sell, and if some idiot gets his jollies thinking it IS a blood groove, well, more power to Ka-Bar.

Hi there, I got some question enquiry - Is there any knife quality difference made by different countries ? Most ka bar knife I have seen is made in taiwan so I'm not sure what the quality is like.
exaggerating 1 year ago
@exaggerating Ka-Bar keeps theor quality control pretty consistent across all manufacturing locations. As long as the process and procedures are maintained, it doesn't matter where the bknife is made.

@bossman12334 I'd like to know about suck knife too
did you find anything?
brenoakiy 1 year ago
No, the main purpose of the fuller is to lighten the blade. That whole blood thing is bs.
xCAUTIONZOMBIESx 1 year ago
the main purpose of the fuller is to allow the blood to drip from it
so the knife doesnt get stuck in the body

Does the 1095 steel hold and edge like AUS 6 or AUS 8. I saw the Ka-Bar warehouse this summer in Olean, New York. Great review. I might actually buy this knife.

I have a Coldsteel SRK AUS 8 never been used with slight sheath wear on the finish I would be interested in trading for an equal interesting knife. If anyone is interested leave me a message on my page.I dont mind if its been used as long as its not worn out or broken.

Removing material, no matter what shape it is, will never stiffen the blade. Stiffness is increased by increasing the area moment of inertia. Basically, this means adding material further from the centerline. The blood groove actually weakens the blade, albeit by an inconsequential ammount
ragehammer45 1 year ago
how do you sharpen this knife? i have a crkt m16 14 le with a black blade and i dont want to sharpen it because im afraid to mess up the black. and thanks for this review i just ordered the knife.
killratoss 1 year ago
I like these knives, but from the factory they aren't nearly as sharp as many of the other manufacturer's knives. I was actually disappointed by the quality of the edge. About 20 minutes of work and I had it scary sharp, the steel itself is excellent. Ka-Bar needs to get up to speed with factory sharpening.

isn't the blade blued like a gun? i read it somewhere. and if so does it make the knife harder to maintain? or is there no diffrence between a gun blue knife and a regular blade?

RCaseProductions 1 year ago

AirsoftVeteran96 1 year ago
Why isn't the top swage sharpened like the bottom length? I've always wondered that.
KasinH 1 year ago
@KasinH Because that would make it a double edged knife and therefore illegal in many areas and thus hurt sales. If someone really wanted to they could sharpen the swedge themself.
wwwknivestowncom 1 year ago
@wwwknivestowncom Thank you. Makes sense.
KasinH 1 year ago
@KasinH Also, one note is that the USMC KA-BAR is designed more for stabbing than slashing. Not saying it can't be used for slashing, but notice when he talks about the pointed end. Marines also use them as bayonets on there assault rifles.

@probie68 Thanks for the input. I've owned a KA-BAR for a couple decades now and it's never let me down.

i wish knivestowndotcom had the usmc full size ka-bar with the black kraton grip
MrBloodyGulch 1 year ago
everytime I use my ka bar I love it more and more. I've got big hands so it fits my hand very well. The entire blade is useful in it's own way. I have heard some have broken the blade, at the handle, by prying into stuff. I have enough sense to use the right tool for the job, so This is a non-issue for me.

hey, does anyone know if a regular USMC KA BAR can be sharpened with a diamond sharpener? i know the ones made with D2 steel have to be sharpened by one, but can a regular be? mine just doesnt seem to be working. thanks!
radioguy55 1 year ago
@radioguy55 should work. I have a stone and a diamond sharpener and use both. I always try to use a piece of ceramic or the top of a car window to finish off the job. Sure you know this, but be careful to follow the grind of the blade
Ikefis 1 year ago
I just bought the full size for my grandpa today for Fathers day. He said that he used to sharpen the one that he had in Vietnam on his Combat boots. Great review, BTW
