Some of her work in this album reminds me of Hemingway's writing, not just with regard to subject matter -- war, love, etc. -- but also the way she talks about honesty in writing, and the way she writes using simple and precise words that work better than florid or overly emotional shit. This is a very interesting and rewarding album.
I don´t know the english expression but in Sweden we say something like "being too smart for ones best" and I think that applies to sweet, sweet Polly Jean.
She has it all, the looks, the dress, the fucking chair but her fireplace is not with real wood. Im totally full of disatisfaction about this. I dont know why.
@happysappy21 You wrote better than i did, exactly, her thing is her brilliant intellect and personality, why then have such a superficial thing. Well, back to the studies. And my dream of a real fireplace.
@Autotragisk... yeah the part from 02:20 to 04:35 just shows how good it could have been but the pressure must have got to her. Let's hope she doesn't work with that fireplace again, she may lose the interest of the masses but more importantly she will regain her artistic crediblity
In his song "West Country Girl", Nick Cave writes about Polly "her accent, which I'm told is broad...". This is the first time, I think, that I've heard PJ speak and she certainly doesn't have a "broad" accent, does she? Her Dorset accent comes out slightly when she uses words with R in them but otherwise it just seems like a generic, middle class Southern England/Home Counties accent, doesn't it?
Did she used to have a much stronger accent, or something? Or is our Nick just taking the piss?
For you foreign types who are ignorant about British and Irish accents (you have NO excuse! Surely your German/Aussie/Japanese/Mozambique/etc schools were built to teach you about UK? Even classes like Science (which Britain invented), Geography (we invented that too) and your language classes (Britain did, after all, invent such languages as Spanish, French and Cantonese) should be AngloCentric, "The Science of the British Isles" etc), see a video of Worzel Gummidge to hear West Country accent.
One of the most lucid and intelligent rock star interviews I have ever seen, but then, the album is lucid and intelligent too - and it's hard not to get obsessed by it!
She's one of the few true artists... Now it makes so much sense why this album seems so unusually amazing!

@Autotragisk yeah, despite how good her sublime music is, if the fireplace 'aint right...well, might as well give up!
nightfly33 5 months ago
@Autotragisk... you're right, that flame has no personality, it goes against everything she stands for and is totally cramping her style. For shame!
