  • This vid went viral on Amman

  • Thank you for this. There are a lot of things you introduce that I don't seem to find elsewhere. I appreciate your videos!

    Bryan K7BRY

  • This video is popular on Lilongwe

  • @ynardhowar1229 thanks for the DX report!

  • interesting bits, thanks for putting it up

  • Thanks for the nice demo Randy. Always wanted to know what the hell Hell was!

  • This is an interesting mode. Search for Feld Hell club, they have monthly contests that bring out the activity.

  • thats great i got to try that when i get my shack set up

  • give it a stream for RX & TX also send and recieve Hell criber signals ?

I have only a pc, but i want to talk & Send something over the hellscriber too.

    PLS ANSWER

  • @Goasler link to software in the show notes

  • Comment removed

  • @Goasler If you find someone else with a pc and the software you might be able to do a skype call, may take some tweaking with the audio card settings to make it work.

  • @K7AGE

would you do a skype call with me with Hellscriber please ?

  • @Goasler Sorry, I'm not set up to do that.

  • Sooo can i talk to people with that?

  • @smiletehk yes, text chatting over the air

  • get it! hell! HAH

  • The title just made me laugh hysterically

  • Use MultiPsk

  • That's cool! Never tried Hell mode or knew what it looked like. Tnx!

  • bravo lima yankee!

  • is there a free study guide available for tech license?

  • @SuperTechieJ Don't know. I know there are online sample test, dig around qrz.com. Otherwise google around to look. The Gordon West books and CDs are very good. Randy

  • @SuperTechieJ hamexam d0t org is a great place with free signup, flash cards to practice, and sample exams. That plus Wikipedia was all I needed to get my extra class license.

  • great work!

i used to be a ham radio operator, and this fires me up again.

  • This is AWESOME! :D Unfortunately, the link to the software is dead, so I can't download it. :(

Also, out of curiosity, do you need any special equipment to use Hellschrieber, or can you just execute it on a computer and use it on the fly?

  • @KizulEmeraldfire I have updated the software link to the Feld Hell page that list several programs. Thanks for letting me know.

  • @K7AGE

Excellent! :D You're welcome — and thank you for updating the link! :)

  • very cool; and super geeky; love it; how long can I go on using semicolons;? maybe; forever; i dont know; i think i should stop now; no wait; just one more; ok; there; done.

  • this was great, i should probably never do this though

  • Hi, thank you for posting this video. The review of the software and hellschreiber is great! Thank you for your video. 73!

  • I saw my call on your video. Very cool! Thanks for posting these. Good luck and good DX de Roger (KE5AQD)

  • THANK YOU:>)))))

  • Very interesting!! thnk for sharing your knowlegde.. Have a good day from Montreal!!

  • @Loeil22 I'll me in Montreal week of the 17th. Is it cold?

  • @K7AGE oh hell yeah really cold!!...you come for a HAM show?

  • @K7AGE Im a highschooler and I think this stuff is the neatest thing!

    Well one of them!

  • Dit moet dan toch verwant zijn aan wat de lezertjes van Bob Evers nog wel kennen als de Hell-snelzender! :-)

(For all you non-Dutch readers; a book series from the 50s/60s about three rather adventurous highschool boys mentions a 'Hell-fast-transmitter')

  • this is so interesting that i thought i did'nt have time to watch it but i just fell away and i love mystereies!! :3

  • I WANT ONE! :D I'm 15.

  • Very nice demo, I've never seen this mode before! DE KE1MO 73

  • Why would you work another station that is not his working frequency that is just rude and very lid'ish , Contest etiquette is needed on youtube to show the proper thing to do.. because hams are getting worse and worse about stuff like that. I would not pronounce Feld = Field, it is Field, but not in German. Feld like in held

  • translate all into russian please))

  • Kinda like QPSK but analog.

  • @dreammaker182 It is interesting, if is a fax mode. The computer does not decode the signal, it just displays dots, which we are able to read.

  • @K7AGE so theoretically you could draw an image using this protocol... Kind of like ASCII art but without the ASCII... I understand it a bit better now. It's a really interesting format. I'd love to get my own set up but I can't afford any HF equipment at the moment...

  • 14.063MHz

  • Sometimes I feel like I'm the youngest person into this type of thing. Not enough highschoolers like me who would want to learn about things like this.

  • @digivince There are way too many old farts, we need many more young people in the hobby. Checkout Teen Radio Journey, google for webpage and podcast.

  • @K7AGE Thanks a lot I checked it out as soon as I read the comment. They mention you in the podcast. I'll keep an eye on this stuff. I hope to get my license soon.

  • @K7AGE im 15 and im hope upgrade to general in october

    kc9rxp

    73

  • @K7AGE We already had a hobby. It was called sniffing, scripting, IRC and nuking or as the public calls it. "Hacking" It was your version of radio.

  • @cesar333 hehe, winnuke32. though if you flood on HAM bands the FCC will skin your nuts.

  • @digivince Def. not the youngest, im only in 6th grade :o

  • @digivince

    I do!! lol

  • @digivince Just became a freshman, I really wanna find the sources of these and go visit where the source is.

  • aww, hell.

  • Very interesting, thanks for the demonstration.

  • for some reason in my town I downloaded hell and I'm getting text and numbers and it wont stop and the singal is very very strong to the point were its black!

  • @MrVladTech You audio level may be too high.

  • Great video. Thanks.

  • Sending a modified form of qr-code would be interesting.

  • Strip-O-FAX, I love it! I had fun recording these signals to cassette tape.

  • great, never used it but thx for this vid. sq8jii

  • You said that signal that started around 12:30 or so was packet or something; I've heard it enough times on HF that it got me curious. I think it might be Clover or something similar. I have yet to find any software that can handle that mode, though.

    Tnx, KJ4NUY

  • @junkb0x99 I'm not sure what it is, oh well. Randy

  • Oh god I got the joke!

And gained a pot belly and horn rimmed glasses as a result (Not really, more of an inside joke between me and a friend)

  • The original MSN

  • Great video, very interesting.

  • fascinating, I'm lost but thanks

  • Very well done video with a technology that was completely unknown to me before watching. Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed it!

  • Tried to use the app you gave to get signals from the youtube video. I'm stupid.

  • the very first e-mail or text message

  • Great videos Randy.

    73's VK8DOD

  • Thanks randy

Very good demo, looks very interesting cheers and 73's from australia

  • Wow all the cool stuff you can do on ham radio compared to the mid 70's - I shouldnt have let my novice class expire, now I guess I have to study and test again for a new license, have to decide with the new classes and code/no-code what to do initially and will have to locate a nearby tester.

  • Saw your note on a K7AGE video. Code is not required for any license these days. You have to start with a tech, but can take all exams one after the other. Go to ARRL to find test sessions.

    KC9PYD

  • I know my comment was slightly misleading, I know code was dropped totally in testing Feb 07 and there are elements to pass for each of tech, general and extra. Testing for at least tech element 2 then general element 3 on Nov 14th, totally ready with 100% on the entire element 2 pool, still bringing up my proficiency on the element 3 pool. I might wait a year after to test for extra, give me some study and refresher time, been since 93 that I taught a lot of what's in that element.

  • Since I wrote that I have also found the contact info for the nearby VE, testing dates, fees, etc. Basically my comment was that there is so much to do with ham radio and be able to tie it to my hobby and business with computing equipment and my electronics skills, Well I'd better get back to work on this dead printer so I have study time this evening. Nov 14th is just 2 wks away.

  • I do plan to relearn morse/CW shortly after licensure though, even 35 yrs later I miss the ditdahdahs.

  • I received my tech on 6/9. Take General next Friday. I'm glad there is no code required, although I make learn it just for fun. 73, KC9PYD.

  • Yeah I saw that in the ULS. I need to ask about vanity calls when I test, would rather get the call I want right off than to have to cancel the issued one to get the vanity call. I've already checked and the two I have in mind are open. Passing the tech will be no sweat, hopefully I do as well on the general element, saves a step that way. Once you do learn code, and the seasoned hams can back this up, you will be hooked and just continue learning.

  • Hi Randy

Great video, Im a big Fan of Hell, ill look out for you.

    Regards de David M3MQR

  • This is cool =P

  • Very nice presentation!

    philw de ka1gmn

  • so this is like cw that you can see haha

  • They had this in the 1920s? what else did they have we dont know about?

  • right? this looks to be alot more fun then aim or yahoo

  • Is it a fine Stressless Digimode for those was not Trained in 10 Finger Keyboard use ! I like it I`m use it mostly for 144 Mhz Tropo Digi Dxing in Use i lay back in the Seat and Enoy it and hear and watch the Signals! Beautiful! Cant you make also a Video for "WSJT" Mode Meteo Scattering? Greetings HB3YAV
  • okay nevermind. I see the link. Thnks alot.

  • Oh this is totally awesome. Where is this software?!

  • I thought at first the computerized version on screen was some type of simulated print. But now i see that this data stream is a type of narrow strip fax like graphics ?/ right?

  • Yes, in the 20s they used paper strip to print the messages.

  • what the hell im learning

  • What an interesting mode! Say, do numbers stations ever use this mode?

  • probably not, as it would require more equipment than a simple receiver.

  • Good stuff, Randy. FYI and for anyone else, this mode is not difficult to set up. I downloaded IZ8BLY's program - cobbled together a quick receive patch cord and started monitoring the HELL freqs. I was lucky, cuz I was able to copy VE3II almost immediately. Not having transmit capabilities, I dropped in my call in CW and he answered me via Hell!! Cool to make a cross mode QSO with the first stn I heard!! If you're interested, this is a fun alternative the usual ham modes. 73 Vic, W4NB

  • Hi Im 25 years old and messed with HAM radio's since I was young "Galaxy99" that was turned down to CB meters, and would like to get licensed and get better equipment. But I know no one to help me to do so. What is the best way to get started. I would love to CQ out in the HAM world. Thanks.

  • nice thank you for posting it what class license do you need am working on my general now in where do you get the software in that thats 73's

  • I was operating on HF, so you need a General license for the HF bands. The link to the software is in the 'more info' area on the right top below my call. Randy

  • I'd heard of Hellschreiber before, but hadn't seen it in action. Thanks for posting this video.

  • Hey thanks for putting this up, fascinating stuff!

I'll make a point of watching some more of your videos when time permits.

  • This is really cool, so it was kinda like the first e-mail system?

  • The teletype machines were around before this. The Hellschreiber machines were a simpler alternative to the teletype machine. Randy

  • Will you be sprinting tomorrow Randy ?

I am still waiting for my Signalink to arrive so I can only RX; but I will be passively participating.....

  • Not sure! Randy

  • Hi Randy Very interested in your last video "what the hell" I have just downloaded it and added it to my collection of ham radio video's keep up the good work. 73 de Barry G4DIP

  • Interesting mode, have fun with it. Randy

  • great to meet a guy with such a huge knowledge in communication electronics.

had really much fun watching your videos.

just working on my licence, hope to have contact one time.

    greetings from upper bavaria, germany.

  • Get your license so that you can join us on the air. Randy

  • Thank you Randy, it's nice to finally learn something from a You Tube vid! I never knew about this Hell mode before but it looks very unique and interesting. I'll have to give it a go sometime.

  • if i ever get into this hobby you'll be one of the first people i look for

  • i have that exact same behringer mixer

  • very cool. Just added nino's app to my pc. been watching along from the sound from your vid, lol.

  • I wish more people used Hellschreiber, I'm still waiting to get my first QSO on that mode.

  • What I think Jellyean is trying to say is, that Randy is the only guy he dreams about, meeting ... Oh, you cowboys!

  • you are the damn best guy ive ever meet. well done.

end, you know, there isnt many people like you. what the HELL? =D brilliant i want to work with you

  • Randy you are the coolest Ham I have ever seen. Awesome work. I hope to work you someday.

    Tek KB2SRH

  • thanks

  • Hey Randy,

Tnx for the info. interesting. I don't know if anyone else noticed KG4FET responded to your call at ~5:35. ;-)

I am looking to take my General ASAP so I can join in the digital HF fun. I just got motivated once again to upgrade.

  • the wonder of the computers. i did all these digital mode abt ten years ago on 10,15.20 meters. no more spending money on tncs etc. mix w. software did it all. tnx for vidio

  • awesome video randy... didnt even know it existed!

  • I just installed Hellschreiber software from IZ8BLY, changed the stereo mixer on my PC to pick up the audio from this video (just like it is explained in the PSK31 video) and I can read all the QSOs!

  • Cool, this is an interesting mode. You could probably copy the signal while I was talking! It is interesting if two stations double, you see a mix of two signals! Randy

  • I sure as HELL enjoyed that. Thanks.

  • Thanks randy for explaining this 'exotic?' mode. I've heard of it but you have the only video that really explains it.

    Another great vid.

BTW...I picked up AO-15 for the first time last night during an almost overhead pass!

    It was very encouraging!

And I learned how to do it watching your video about it.

    Tnx agn es '73

    -BILL

  • Bill, glad that the video help explain this old mode brought back to life on the PC. Randy

  • that was interesting even though im not 100% sure what just happend...lol

  • interesting...what the helll...i dun get it...

  • This is fascinating stuff. Are there Turkish, Cyrillic, etc. fonts for this mode? Are folks trying it on 137 kHz or cave radio freqs?

  • I just looked, I don't see any of the fonts that you are looking for. I have no idea if anyone is using this on 137 KHz. I though that most of the 137 was slow speed CW. Cave freqs, I have no idea. Randy

  • i have that cam!

  • hi K7AGE This Is Vk2Charlie78 From Sydney Australia GDay!!!

    73.

  • Very interesting video. I'm not a ham yet...seeing videos such as yours make me want to get a license even more. Keep up the good work!

  • Well, get to work and get your ticket and join the fun. Randy.

  • license for what?

  • They are referring to an Amateur Radio License or "HAM" license. Check amateur radio on wikipedia for basic info. Waaa-aaaay too much to talk about on here. Lot's of fun if you are technically and/or community minded. 73 de Jim(AI4FU)

  • K7AGE de G6PBS tnx fer demo. 73 de G6PBS

  • not boring, extremely interesting!

  • Excellent demonstrating and teching skills Andy ! Great video and ufb station ! de SP9TTG, Peter.

  • Very cool, Even though i do not have a Ham Operators License Its videos like this that entertain me. Radio has always caught my attention. i just dont have the time to go out and find someone authorized to issue me a license (Or have the time to even take the test(s))

  • I hope you find the time and get your license and join us on the air. Randy

  • Very interesting Randy, I'm not a digital guy, but it looks cool! 73

  • hello, great video i watch allot of k7age videos and allot of great interest,73s from william.

  • IZ8BLY, search for his web site

  • Once again, a masterpiece of the visual arts. Sure do like that conversation with K7TP.

  • The highlight of my 13 QSOs. Randy

  • For some reason today I am getting RF into my mixer. That is what when I transmit you hear that low frequency distortion. Oh well, where is my maintenance man?

    Randy

  • Thanks Randy. Another fine demonstration.
