  • ANY 4.3 OR 5.7,ANY YEAR WITH SPIDER OF COURSE. Its just a two prung plug like the manual poppet spider, but this spider is SMARTER : ) ! Your ecm will reward you with advanced timing and better fuel mileage. (YOU ARE TALKING TO A TECHNICIAN).

GM knows about these crappy things, along with a few others. A permanent resolution

  • I see some improvemts that can be made.

    1. Upgrade to the electronic FUEL INJECTED spider and not the MANUAL POPPET that you had before. NOTHING IS REQUIRED, DIRECT BOLT IN, NO ECM MODS ETC AT ALL.

This will improve gas mileage 21% MIN ! ! and add above 12 HP ! !

2.REPLACE THE O2 SENSOR, ITS SOAKED IN GAS AND NOT WORKING CORRECTLY.

3.CHANGE THE OIL, ITS FULL OF GAS AND WILL WIPE OUT THE ROD AND MAIN BEARINGS-DESTROYING THE CRANKSHAFT AS WELL.

"1. Upgrade to the electronic FUEL INJECTED spider and not the MANUAL POPPET that you had before. NOTHING IS REQUIRED, DIRECT BOLT IN, NO ECM MODS ETC AT ALL."

Do you know if this will work on a 1994 Astro Van as well?

  • How long did this take aside from filming? Have to do this exact same thing to my 95 Astro.

  • @DawgcityClev

If nothing is seized up, I would say one to two hours.

Watch the front center upper intake bolt that's right behind the idle speed controller. It may have a lot of carbon build-up on it from the EGR system, and could strip or snap. Take your time. (Mine seized at the halfway point)

  • Speedo gauge

  • Good news and bad news. The good: installed pcm, engine purrs like a kitten.

The bad: Trans wont shift and speedo guage not operating.

Defective pcm, should have a replacement by friday.

    Always something

  • thanks for this useful info. i love it!

  • Picking up the pcm today.

Woke up this morning thinking about the situation, if I have a short in my injector could that be why the pcm got fried? I could fry the new pcm . I'm going to see if I can ohm out a new injector before I plug the old one in.

  • Hi 701, went to the auto parts store where they tested my ignition module 4 times, they say it's good. looked in a Haynes repair manual and it states the pcm controls the injector. Advanced Auto Parts has a PCM for $56, I'm ordering it today. That would explain why the fp keeps running, PCM triggers the fp relay.

I'll let you know how it goes, I'm in too deep to give up now.

  • Hey 701 put a test light on the connector to the fuel injector, cranked it over, no power :(

I was told to replace the ignition module if I had no pwer to the injector, I do have spark though.

  • @tinacay

The ecu does get the signal to fire the injector from the distributor.

In the past when the module went so did the spark. Should only cost around $30.00 and it can't hurt having an extra one if it's not the problem. No injector needed.

  • Thanks 701, I hope to look at it today or tomorrow. Any Idea why the fp would keep running? (it's not the relay, I switched it around)

  • Hey 701, finally took the top off.

I have fuel (64psi) to the injector but nothing coming out of the poppets.

Fuel pump never stops running in the run position.

took ohm reading at injector, got 0 (direct short?) I don't have any blown fuses

Do you think I have a bad injector or a bad computer? I'm stumped

Charging battery for next day of troubleshooting.

  • @tinacay

You have two of the big three(Compression, spark, but no fuel) that are needed for your car to run. Your lack of signal to the injector could be a few things. I would test the injector harness for voltage while cranking. You should have some sort of reading as the engine cranks. If voltage is not getting to the injector, trace the wires and look for bad spots. If you are getting voltage at the harness then it is probably the injector. It should ohm out around 1.5. Good hunting.

  • I got a 2k astro and I replaced the plugs , wires and the cap plus rotor also the injectors now I have a back fire is my timing off please help!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks local 701, I will check it out today.

is it the computer that tells the fuel pump to keep running if it does not have the 55lbs? or is there a fuel pressure sensor somewhere?

btw, im local 399 in chicago

  • @tinacay

It takes that amount of psi for the fuel to get past the poppet valves. Anything less and they will not open.

    The poppet valves are mechanical.

  • awesome vid. I have a 95 astro that won't start I have spark and good fuel pressure, fuel pump and filter was replaced about 3 years ago. One thing I find strange is my fuel pump keeps running when I turn the key to on position ( I thought it was only suppose to run for a few seconds and turn off)

I sprayed some carb cleaner into the intake and it fired up. I am assuming I have a bad injector.

Any thoughts before I tear it apart to replace the injector?

  • @tinacay

I think the regulator has to have a reading of at least 55 psi for the injector to fire. Your fuel pressure may not be enough.

  • SO glad they moved past that design..

  • Got a 94 Astro did the tune up and all that stuff on ly problem has to be the spider or the regulator. Shops want to much money to repair and i was hesitant thinking it was a hard job being i am mechanically capable of doing odds and ends your video made it look like a walk in the park will let you know how it goes had sitting for like 4 yrs or so. Thanks from Hawaii (this is my sons screen name)

  • @808hatem

It's not that bad of a job, just take your time and don't rush like I did.

    Good luck.

  • So my 1999 astro van is leaking oil in a monumental way. Basically pouring out when the engine is running. I think it's probably a valve cover gasket, but I've never gotten into the engine. Is this going to be doable by a guy with basic "replace the parts" ability or should I pop for the repair shop to tackle it?

    Thanks for any advice.

  • @JayDanYell Just take the doghouse off and have a look with the engine running. If your van is leaking that much oil, you should be able to see where the source right away. It could be anything, oil sending unit, oil filter, valve cover, timing cover, intake manifold. Good luck.

  • Sounds like my problem too. I'm only getting 9 MPG, missing, rough idle, strong gas smell from exhaust, and sometimes no start (like today). It tries to run, but seems to be flooded. Strong gas smell and white vapors coming out of air cleaner when opened. Wait a while and it will start, runs really rough at first. I guess until excess fuel clears out? 01 Astro 127000 miles. Your reply is greatly appreciated.

  • @metalmoto Sorry,The 96-02 Astros used the sequential (CSFI) SCPI. The video shows the 92-95 multiport (CMFI) version of the CPI unit. The heads and intake manifold are very different also. You could have a bad fuel regulator or even a stuck open injector dumping fuel. The next time it floods pull the spark plugs one at a time. The plugs that are soaked in fuel indicate bad injector or bad spark to that plug. If they are all soaked look towards the regulator or lack of spark to the plugs.

  • is this harder to do on a jimmy?

I have a huge power problem I have done a full tune up new wires and plug(foweld) intake gasket cleaned the intake K&N air filter and i even replaced the exhaust assembley (cat was plugged) i have gained some power back but its still shy ! could it be the CPI

  • @kkool1984 Once you remove the retaining bolt from the fuel line, the job will go a lot quicker on s-10s.

Raw fuel, or black smoke from your exhaust could point to a bad CPI system.

  • I replaced the fuel pressure regulator, it can be replaced by itself and sea foam in the gas tank will keep the poppets from sticking again.

I used carb cleaner to clean and free up sticking poppets, and clean the inside manifold.

For those experiencing a rough idle and fuel being used, also be sure to spray a lil carb cleaner to verify you don't need intake manifold upper or lower gaskets, that may of been eaten away by normal wear and tear or the fuel unit dumping raw gas, soaking them,

  • Thank you for your help.

My chevey drains lots of fuel through EXHAUST and I can smell it.

Could you tell me if that was your problem too?

    Kind regards,

    Arif

    arifmbutt@yahoo.com

  • @ThePakPatriot My van had good days and bad days. On the good days the Astro would run great, but on bad days I would get the raw fuel through the exhaust also.

This would happen two to three times a week, and only on the first start of the day.

  • Thanks for showing this. I think I have to replace the one on my Astro Van. Helped me out a lot. Thanks.

  • hey where did u get your new gasket that goes around the manifold?

  • @ben2317f

    rockauto.

    Everything came from rock.
