My father was on the Blue Ridge 78-82. We lived Yokohama, and i went to Yo-Hi there on the base. I heard the Honch is basicly gone. But there are good time everywhere.
@topgun0964 Haha my father was on Blue Ridge too, but not at the same time. If im correct he was in from 87- 91. Im not sure but he was there for 4 or 5 years!
My daughter and I visited Yokosuka last Oct. for 2 weeks since my parents live in the retirement home now. Somehow it was still hot and humid in Mid Oct. and Yen rate was so bad, $1 was only 80 yen. We got lost in Yokohama Station, lol. I enjoyed all the food I love at Daiei and Mores?, my daughter loves Coco Ichibanya and enjoyed shopping at Exchange. I met some old friends after 19 years, I plan to visit again this Oct.
What do you do in the navy? Because i want to actually visit and possibly move to japan and being in the military would probably be the best route for me because i grew up into a military family and thats just what i want to do, anyways if i wanted to live there wouldnt the airforce be the best choice?
WOW, what a change! I know this video is from '09... wow. I was in Yokosuka from 98 to 02 as a brat, hoping to get stationed there when I become active duty. Thanks for sharing.
I miss cherry blossoms in spring and great fire works in summer. However I don't miss rainy season in May, hot humid summer and cold winter there. My husband stationed in Yokosuka for total of 10 years. I'm his best survenior. hahaha!!! He misses drinking beer in a hot bath.
I just wanted to respond and say thanks for the video. I was stationed in Yokosuka / Yokohama for quite a few years. Last command there was the USS Independence. Have not been back to Japan since Indy pulled out in 1998.
Just wanted to say thanks for the video and it doesn't look like things have changed all that much.
Nice to see Yokosuka again. I was there back in about 1985-ish ... aboard the USS Bristol County LST-1198 ... I remember this HUGE Buddha statue close to there or maybe over in Kamakura? Did you go see that thing? It's HUGE! Nice Video! Anchors Away! (aweigh?) former GMG3 Fallin
I used to wait for my husband at the main gate when we date back in 1980-1981, my husband was on USS Midway then. We got married and our son was born at Yokosuka Naval Hospital in 1982. Our 2 kids went to pre school, kindergarten and Sullivan elementary there. My son is now on USS Nimitz, his ship pulled in Yokosuka last summer. He had a good time, I'm so happy he was able to visit my parents in retirement home in Yokohama. So many memories there, thank you.
I really enjoyed your video. My son just touched down in Yokosuka this evening, and your video put my mind at ease. He is assigned to the USS Stetham DDG63.
Again, thanks for putting your video online for worried mothers like me to view.
First thanks for all the kinds words and support. I miss Japan badly now too. I was just TDY there until November. I will keep the video blog going on DC if there is demand. Long live BLUERIDGE, the honch, and YOKO!
Great videos, It is very nice to see the sights again (liked the cheerleaders), I also wanted to say thanks for being a great representative for the Navy. Very refreshing to see a squared away Sailor on YouTube, keep up the great attitude and best of luck in your career!
I used to work on the Tugboats. I had so much fun in Japan. I was there for 4 years. Best time ever! I miss it very much. Can't wait to go back to visit.
How about a shot of the main gate? Was a Marine MP on the gate from 1978-1980!
Loved Japan!! Remember the book Shogun? The real life Will Adams character's memorial is a little park above Yokosuka. A must see! One of many nearby! Thanks for the blog! The Oklahoma City was the flagship then!
Wow, I've walked past you many times. Lived off-based in Hayama from September 79 to Feb 81, then moved on base. Husband was Blue Ridge, I worked at Thew Gym. I got there while the Okiboat was still the flagship.
On Uss francis Hammond 76-78. midway was there as well. Ranger,etc..Saw video of Honcho ,Looked the same. Dark Days. God Delivered. Life is much diff, like your video. Place had a distinctive smell. Can't capture on video, Great memms though.
I used to be stationed on the USS Midway which is now a Museum in San Diego. The Blueridge was there when I was there too. My buddies and I would go to Shinjuku and Harajuku and Ropongi a lot. We would Skateboard all over the place. We had a favorite skatepark in a place called Kiyose which was a station just from Shinjuku.
I was there 1981 to 1985. When I left they had just switched from F-4's to FA-18's
I shot it on a Cannon Elph SD850, 8MP, 4xzoom. Nothing earth shattering but a really durable camera that takes great shots and video. It also is very water resistant as I found out at the top of Mt.Fuji.
Great video!! My application for the blueridge was just approved this week. Looking foward to getting out there. Stationed out at NASWI a RAG command. Also, great camera!! What kind? I am looking for one.
I'm going to be pissed if my wife gets stationed here

I was homeported at Yokosuks for 2 years, 1966 to 1968 and I didn't see anything that looked familiar. It has apparently changed a lot in 43 years.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do the videos! I was born there, but have never visited, though I was stationed at Kadena AB for a time.
Could you get a good shot of the Hospital while you're there? lol
Safe sea travels, Sailor!
