Wow, you have totally opened a new door to me. Totally worthy the subscription. I had no idea the situation was that bad. Anyway, I have never been a fan of fandoms, and even though I am active in two or tree at the time, I always act as the "outsider" after making a few friends.
I'm totally gonna do something :P
I'm not a competent arranger of fan work, but I try :)
@HijoozuRakoi And then you go on to shit out even more bad arranges of mainstream themes, with untagged videos to boot.
DID YOU EVEN LISTEN TO ME?
There are ENOUGH INCOMPETENT PEOPLE IN THIS FANDOM. Incompetent arrangers, incompetent translators, lazy hackers (Still no TH13 English patch? How pathetic!), the list goes on.
YOU MAKE IT EVEN WORSE.
What Touhou needs is AWESOME PEOPLE. But oh... They all went off to the My Little Pony fandom! Which did everything right from the start.
If you want to make arranges, then do it well. Look at which arranges exist, and make something special.
Ideally, that would be a vocal arrange in a non-Japanese language of something obscure (Seihou, ZUN's Strange Works, related games, or rare PC-98/side game/music CD themes).
Bonus points for lyrics about how much the fandom sucks.
And don't upload them now. Wait for Distant Phantasm's 3rd move, and submit them there. You want to reach the fans, don't you?
I suscribed for your enlightning discussion (touhou needs more of these) on the state of touhou. Honestly, I believe (based on my experience) many people have great ideas, thoughts and opinions about touhou that never are spoken, for lack of a medium. If only one thing, I would change that. Thank you for all your contributions and efforts; best wishes to you!
@Roflcopter147 Argh. Confound these subscribers, they drive me to create an epic 10-minute Herselves vocal arrange with lyrics full of rage and insults!
That would in fact be an excellent medium to spread these thoughts, if only for the sheer irony of it.
Seriously, why don't you subscribe for the music? That's what will continue to appear here. Not "even more Touhou discussion".
Well, if you think Touhou lacks such a medium, then why don't you go ahead and do something about that yourself?
@Roflcopter147 Really, all this lethargy, all this whining about "yeah, I wish the Touhou scene would change, that's how I'd do it, but I don't think anyone cares or supports this, let's continue sharing the latest cosplay pics and pirating the new album from circle XY hurr durr" is exactly what brought us this misery in the first place. The fanbase is smaller than you think. When spammed in the right places, new mediums can quickly reach the people who care. That's what my experience tells me.
@Roflcopter147 You just need to do it the right way. Like my Herselves arrange idea. That will even reach people that usually aren't interested in drama.
For more on "the state of Touhou" (or, at least how it was in May 2011 when I stopped caring), check my talk page on the Touhou Wiki (User talk:NamelessLegacy), for even more arguments. Also, I just updated that Western arrange scene document in the description with the newest state of the rage.
The reason that TH6-8 arranges are so popular is because simply those games were as well. And that's what a lot of circles want: popularity. Why else would so many cutsy bullshit high pitched Touhou tracks be made? Because it's cute and a bunch of people buy into that crap. Apparently the same with techno (which has been more popular as of late vs piano/real instrument arranges).
I'm not too deep into this yet, but I'd probably be in your shoes after all that time. And pressure from idiots.
@ToL1337 Sounds so cruel. Yes I do know that most people are like that but I believe some people make arranges just because they love the music. They don't chase for glory nor popularity but they just enjoy making music, even if it's just an arrange, no?
@GrtrThnClnD I said a lot of circles, not all. There are the few out there that like the music for the music, what you say is absolutely true and sorry if I implied that I was referring to all circles
@ToL1337@GrtrThnClnD I might add that is probably seems easier and more motivating for many to just pirate FL Studio and immediately start producing something sounding halfway decent, especially with the help of MIDI files and the countless tutorials out there. Compare that with having to sit down, learn to play an instrument and then recording it properly.
And about popularity: Wouldn't an arrange get even more popularity if it were one of only a few arrangements of a certain source?
@NamelessLegacy Well going down the hard lane learning how to play instruments has it's own benefits. Such as..... you can just play the songs to your friends instead of playing it through your phone and claim that it's yours, anyone can just do that.
And about that popularity... Well it just depends on how good that arrangement is. It already has the X-factor (Am I using the word right? @_@), so you just have to make it awesome to make it greater. Otherwise it's just a lame song.
It feels like I'm reading my own feelings exactly on this matter, since I went through something all too similar. Shame on those who label you for being "emo" without taking your perspective to heart, having seen the things you saw. Just goes to show that your points are absolutely correct.
I also understand why ZUN stopped including MIDIs along with the recorded wavs - too many "musicians" these days are just copypasting segments to capitalize on ZUN's work.
You're a great arranger, and yes, it's really sad that most circles only produce arranges of TH6-8. Considering the mediocrity of most of those circles, perhaps it's better that they neglect the PC-98/side games and the music CD.
All of the SRN/YD tracks are/will be a re-contextualization of their original themes, and are not really aimed at fans of the originals. (I'm just stealing the melodies, so to speak). Besides, I really don't want to work on any music-related side projects for the time.
But yeah, maybe I'll do this eventually. After all, they do everything right the Touhou fanbase (especially the Western one) still does wrong.
This is pretty fantastic. A shame you're being emo for.. some reason. Better luck elsewhere, and please do keep making music. As a touhou fan, I will subscribe, and hope for anything that comes from this channel, under any subject. Fav'd too.
Well, thanks! Uh... I think I explained it pretty well. But in short, being a super-primary with picky tastes surrounded by a bunch of egoistic morons sure is painful. Now, I can safely say that secondaries _are_ the happier Touhou fans after all...
I think I spoil what's to come. For the next months, it's self-sequenced Shenmue II MIDIs/keyboard covers. Then it's more SRN/YD tracks. I prepared one boss battle track loosely based around one theme from Donkey Kong Country 2.
why don't you try doing remixes for game's sound tracks and post them on OCREMIX.org <=- this place where all the hobbyists/professional remixers gather.
You have skills don't waste them, just my two cents, love your work. :)
1. I'm afraid that I can't really meet their standards. I only accumulated those skills in recent years and I'm still not feeling pretty secure in doing arranges. Still learning the basic workflow...
2. I don't want to subject my arranges under their guidelines. For example, they don't really like medleys like this. (continued)
You´ve stated your opinion, which is absolutely nothing bad, if people can´t accept it and want to consider themselves satisfied with stereotype stuff, it´s their problem.
I can totally understand your point and wish you fun and succes with your ongoing projects and ideas. Thanks again for all the criticism you gave me, I hope you might give me advice from time to time. But of course only if you want. ;)
you should make a medley in gxscc and let people dislike it and make a protest or something

@NamelessLegacy Hehe, yeah, I should have expected this kind of reaction ;)
Anyway, if the best thing I can do for now is to avoid arranging touhou stuff, then that's what I'm going to do.
Thanks for the feedback :)
