I have been to belgum and the killing fields and to the memorials and I have to say that words cannot exspress how gratefull I and how we as civillans should be to brave heros like harry patch a truly great man a man Rest in peace harry you and all vetrans of war shall never be forgotten
RIP Harry, we shall always remember you, Nobody would know what it would of been like to fight in WW1, and the saying "Sometimes it is hell, trying to get to heaven" is absolutely true in this war
Every time I think of harry...I absolutely cry..I don't know him, But hes the last Survivor?...Its sad.. I'm 15..Yet It breaks my heart to see him as the last...The one who carries the only memories of the First World War.. When WW2 Veterans all die...I shall cry harder, and give my blessing to them into the beyond...Because they lived through hell...Its time to see heaven..
You are braver and more royal than any of the royal family; and, more respected and more revered for who you are, what you do and how you live. You remain and will always be the best that Britain has to offer, and for those of us who were the beneficiaries of your efforts, and those of your fallen comrades in arms, we will always remember you, and tell this generation and future generations to come of your unique life. If only our leaders possessed half of your courage...oh well.
Western European culture's noble dead are never forgotten. From the United States. I will visit you all in France when I make my way there. God bless. Pray for us, and may God have mercy on us.
i am 13 years old and i would just like to say that evan though i still play cod and war games this stuff really effects to and it hit me hard to know a great man like that has died and i would like to say god bless you and it really makes you think about the things you do i life and what if my younger brother was there and he died what would i doi coulnd live without him and thats all i have to say
Imagine what it's like, being the last survivor of WW1, i wonder what it feels like to him to see the world change over more than 100 years, knowing you were a soldier of WW1 and you've seen all these horrible things in that uniform with your rifle, knowing that you were one of them and the one and only one of them left.
Mattaboogum- Don't you fucking dare insult those soldiers who were forced to fight. All of them were brave enough to say that they had been to war. That to me is more than enough.
dang! 6 months of training at that age and he was on the frontline!! omg he is one brave guy... rip mate, one day ill get to rub shoulders with the greats such as people like you.
well i dont know if he was drafted are he volunteered. If i was in a war, i would fight too survive not fight for a country who thinks i am an expendable person.
depends how you feel about your country really, in that war they were forced but as he was under age he had some guts signing up when he didnt have to. but back then people believed in there government and had more faith...but nowadays we hate ours because they just want to screw us every chance they get.. if you ever go to war, think of it like your fighting for the men either side of you rather than the ones in the suits back home.
@Mattaboogum don't for get back then people have a lot of respect for each and the reason some went to fight for their country is because they felt horrid, as young men dieing and yet they sat at home doing nothing
Myoxylite grow the hell up, get a life, after all he went through losing mates in the war and everything he deserves respect whilst you deserve to have your teeth kicked in you piece of shit.
im only 14 so there is a good chance we will see the last suvivors of world war 2 die aswell so much is going to change now R.I.P harry patch and anyone that served in the great war of civilisation.
mroxylite - you should be ashamed of yourself, belittling this seriously brave and courageous man. Perhaps you should read some history and find out exactly what those poor men went through in WWI to ensure idiots like you lived in a free and democratic country. It saddens me that people like you can comment so glibly on one of the most horrific wars history has known.
What makes me proud is the sheer respect and admiration most people give our world war veterans.
The minutes silence, the poppy's it all makes me very assured of our lack of tolerance for bloodshed and war. I've visited the battlegrounds of belgium a few times and the respect even school kids pay when they walk around the superbly maintained cemetry's makes me pround. I only wish we could feel the same for modern conflicts, and demand there be no more war in the name of Britain.
I watched the documentary on last few veterans of the Great War again - The Last Tommy broadcast by the BBC and I am hoping someone will be able to shed light on the brilliant piece of music that is throughout the film. You can also hear it as the final credits role. It is such a fitting piece of music with the sole violin/viola playing and it enables to stir emotion whilst these brave men recount their sad memories. I look forward to a reply. All the best.
i would like to see oxylite go over the top . a very brave man has left us . we should remember this country would be a very different place had tommy and others gave their lives for our forefathers and us all to live the lives we live . this would be typed in german if not for HARRY and friends . may god rest your sole FINE MAN and take away all those painfull memories you endured for us R.I.P TOMMY
and so a part of our great nation has died, but enevr evr forgotten, nore will every single one who thought in that bloody war, and the second and the one we are right now, love, respect, and peace upon every soldier alive and dead, god bless britain, god bless our soldiers...and god bless Harry Patch, we will always remember you...always xx R.I.P
totally agree with you but why are you typing like you're mums going to walk into the room, see you're computer screen and taser you to death. It's the internet it's ok to swear at the brainless zombies on the other side of a phone connection.
...what? the only 2 meaningful wars in history and he is a discrace to his country? you are propably a fat fucking chav who lays in bed untill 3 in the afternoon smoking various things, claiming disability benifits when there is fuck all wrong with you, staying up all night playing shiti techno music with all you're stoner friends watching a strob light and series 4 of the mighty bush whilst working people pay to keep you. So maybe it is you who is the disgrace to you're country.
I'd love an explanation to that. My instinct is that this comment is a troll. A bad one too. For even being able to write something so mindless, you're a disgrace to your family and humanity. Harry Patch never asked for the honours given to him because he was the last Tommy left. I'm sure a full military funeral would have not been the way he wanted to go out. He was vehemently anti-war and refused to speak about WWI until recently. You, mroxylite are a troll and a disgraceful waste of oxygen.
Everyone should visit the Killing fields of Europe and also pay their respects at The Menin Gate. The silence of Tyne Cot is deafening....you can almost hear the artillery, and then thank God you weren't there.
RIP Harry. A Gentleman, A True Hero, An Unflinching Tommy.
@seamusmcmad I went to the Menin Gate at the time of the annual ceremony they have there. the atmosphere in Ypres at that time is like nothing I've known before

He was the last person alive to have gone over the top in the trenches in WW1. He saw awful things. You only have to look at his face to see he is remembering his friends both from his village who died and his gunner team who he was with when they too were killed. Thank you Harry for telling us your story. One amazing man. RIP.
