I witnessed this the other night and I live in Iowa. It looked like lightning to me at first, but then the sky seemed to lit up like it was sunrise for a few seconds and then it went back to black, night time.

There was NO clouds in the sky, just stars. I had a feeling that it could have been a meteorite. The next morning I learned that it was. I was excited that I got to witness it. :-)

@bionicbongsmoker actually its a meteor- ball lightning though similiar in appearance is more eratic and doesnt follow a downward arcing path- it usually will jump up and down - the path of this object captured on film and the fact that is was filmed across a great distance makes you incorrect here. Ball lightning is real but never lasts for this long( a few seconds at best) and with the trajectory caught on film - and to add that a piece of it was found this morning

@Ettenyl56 hey im with you that we are not alone and we do have secret weapons etc but this is a classic small meteorite and nothing but- as far as lightning is concerned it is not uncommon to have flashes of lightning when a fast moving superheated object (meteor)enters into a colder airmass it will cause flashes of lightning type pheomonon. Its been documented many times!
