  • When your hair is really dry and not detangled, it will loc. Even relaxed hair does this because the water hitting extremely dry hair is like a shock and there is almost nothing you can do at that point.

  • Everything is trial and error. You may not be able to keep in protective styles like that and constantly wash/rinse/wet them because your hair seems like it can matt easily. If I were to wet my twists every other day or even every week for about a month and a half, they would probably be turning into baby locs. No fret, at least you still have most of your hair. Trial and error is all, just trial and error. It's not lack of caring, it's experimentation. =)

  • @moonsmoothie9 Thank you! Lack of care by a** I've had braids in my hair for months and nothing like this has every had. I tried a new method and it didn't work for me so yeah trial and error.

  • Not to be rude or anything, but what do you expect to happen when you don't comb your hair for a month??? It's not the products fault, it's your fault. The detangling conditioner is meant to simplify the task of detangling. It doesn't mean it detangles it for you...

  • @Tiffakasia That's the funny thing about the word but anything you say before it is false u ment to be rude. Also, some naturals detangle weekly, daily w/ or without tools there are different hair care methods and this 1 was a bust for me.

  • @Kinksgalore Actually.... I didn't mean to be rude. I don't know you. I meant to be honest with the hopes of not offending you.... But I don't retract my statement or question, I meant it. I didn't say anything offensive, just informative.

  • @Tiffakasia I agree with you you completely. Definitely not the products but lack of caring for the hair.

  • @Tiffakasia I agree with you on that one! It's one thing if you're a new natural and you tried to do this (happened to me after I BC'd). But with the length she has, she should have known to detangle.

  • Omigosh, that same thing happened to me!!! Luckily I was at the African hair braider when I started shrieking "just cut it off!", which they would no tallow me to do. They ended up rewashing it, then pouring on a whole bottle of a 'cone conditioner, then combed out the tangles with the conditioner in. I never want to experience that again!!! I feel for you, girl!

  • If you don't detangle shedded hairs, it will cause the hair to lock together. I attempted to only detangle my hair with my fingers, but it was a mess, plus it took eternity to do versus doing it with a wide tooth comb.

  • hope this helps. I most certainly wont be forgetting this process in case it happens again it really works for me and looking a your hair it looks very very similar in texture to mine.

good luck anyways and happy hhj x

  • I had a similar thing just 2 days ago, and it took me 2 days also but what worked for me was a half mix of hairvedas whipped ends hydration and water which i sprayed onto the matted roots then smoothed down my shaft. I then added a small amount of herbal essences red bottle leave in creme and smoothed that down. then finally adding some coconut oil and smoothing down.transitoining and being natural they say dont use a fine tooth comb but thats the only thing that detangled it! i barely lost hair

  • Have you flat ironed yet? I wanna see your hair flat ironed one of these days:D

  • @wataki2 nope! not interested . . . i'll just get a straight weave

  • I had a similar experience twice during my transitioning journey (I am still transitioning).. The first time was taking out braids & I didn't debt angle before showering which was stupid. The second time was after taking out a weave... Those were very horrible experiences, I totally understand. Detangling in that situation is like ripping out your hair :(

  • I feel your pain! This happened to me a couple months ago. Honestly, I was being careless with my hair. Now I detangle extremely small sections at a time with my hands and coconut oil. I keep them in medium sized two strand twists. I use a fair amount of oil when twisting them so they do not tangle. I rub an oil serum through them daily. I keep them in a week at a time and the night before I untwist them I french braid the twists down with leave in conditioner. This seems to be working for me.

  • @DefinePrivacy Thanks for the tips . . . . I can't french braid. =/

  • So its not just my hair

  • @melodyroop nope! lol

  • Maybe you needed to trim your endes OR comb it more often.

    Good luck on your journey!

  • I had the same thing happen to me.... all I did was take my time with hair and started wearing braids for a shorter length of time

  • @ChristinNachelle123 Thanks for the tip!

  • my daughter and I have coily hair and I personally think our curl pattern and thickness isn't condusive to finger detangling but more power to those who are able.

  • @naturallocksdvm Amen.

  • =O

The SAME THING happened to me on the SAME DAY.

    I cut it all off.

They were relaxed ends so it didn't hurt that much but my hair is like 2 inches long now.. LOL.

  • Your hair looks long and thick. how long u had in the braids? how often do u trim ur ends?

  • This happened to me when I washed my hair while wearing it in a protective style. In my case, I think it was caused by the shed hairs being trapped, and not being released combined with the water making my hair shrink and tangle around each other. I don't really protective style anymore. It did more damage than good for my personal situation.

  • @rockthenatural Oh Lawd I felt like changing my whole routine.

  • We have to go into what causes this natural hair horror since many of us were confronted with it. Products can be the cause, but also the wrong techniques e.g. not proper detangling and leaving the hair too long in twists and braids. What some can do may not work for another because of the difference in texture and the use of certain ingredients. I am sorry you had to go through this.

  • I can def. relate my hair strands want to fight each other too.

  • You are not alone!

This happened to me when I left twists in for way too long (a little over a month). Detangling was HELL! The comb, conditioner, and finger detangling weren't helping, so I had to take them out strand by strand. It took DAYS to get those things out! My hair looked so raggedy, damaged, and broken.

I think for me, the combination of shampooing while wearing the twists and keeping them in for way too long is what caused that mishap. I haven't put in two strand twists ever since.

  • OMG to the "civil war" in your hair. I know you can fix your hair *hugs*

  • @thecurlycamshow thanks! <3 *hugs*

  • Cheer up , your hair looks great anyway! I had to cut out a small knot today, as I took out my twists, sometimes you have to cut it out-no other choice. Still, patience is important, and you have that.Celebrate this obstacle as another chapter in your growth journey! Good luck...

  • @melsue40 thanks!

  • Sometimes its the products that can make your hair do that. This exact thing has happened to me before...only I tried to do the conditioner again, and that made it WAY worse. I had to CUT the dreadlocks out, like you did! A lot of them! And it took me over 2 weeks to get the rest out! My hair knotted, matted, and shriveled into a brillo mess that shrunk into my head! I know what your going through! The product did it to me!

  • @Raijay888 What product did you use?

  • @Kinksgalore unfortunately, I don't remember. When it happened I was taking out braids and thought I didn't detangle enough. Then one day it happened again. I didn't put more conditioner in but I combed out a 1/4 of my hair trying to get the tangles out. My hair is STILL thin from that. What I do know is it usually won't do that the first time you use the product (most likely its conditioner). Carol's daughter Black vanilla smoothie matted out my hair after the 3rd time. I have 4f-4m hair

  • Yeah, really sorry that happened to you! My hair tends to try to dread up too if I'm not detangling on a regular basis. As the other ladies have said, chalk it up to a lesson learned on your journey. Best of luck in the future sis!

  • @Paintedmyst75 Thanks and lesson learned!

  • oh my goodness, always ALWAYS A-L-W-A-Y-S detangle FIRST! No matter what. I'm sorry for your set-back.

  • OMG!!!! Natural hair is a learning experance!!! Don't get down just learn from this!!! Wow

  • @MooreTina11285 lol WOW!!! Was how I was feeling when all my hair came out.

  • AWWWWWW!!!!! OMG girl I am sooo sorry!! D: However your hair has GREAT length :) im sure you will be able to recover in time

  • been there.

  • next time please turn-down the music...was unable to hear what u were saying

  • @mickeysmiles1 sorry! =/

  • Hey Girlie! You really do have beautiful hair :) How long have you been natural?

  • Wow.....how long did u have the braids in? I think it was due to the time you left your baids in. Too much new growth will cause your hairs to start mingling together which is how dreads are created.

  • @ShaykeepJesus1st true but also the buildup from the leave-in . . .I think.

  • That's why detangling your hair daily is important

  • @DayeDayeX usually weekly not daily for my hair texture

  • I'm sorry you had to go through that experience. :-( But a lesson well learned: always stay on top of detangling!

  • @Tangerinesorbet thanks!
