  • #54(Tie)

  • I remember seeing this live about 1972! Have had an earring ever since! GREAT group ... GREAT tune ... GREAT video!

  • Eight Track Blazing Radar Love As The Montana Blue Continental Races Down West Bound US #2 From Spokane...WSP Troopers In The Distant. Another Day In Traffic Court

  • The 70'were fuckin awesome!!!!

  • I imagine this being every pole-dance strippers' anthem.

  • Was this included in VH1's 100 greatest hard rock songs ? I don't think it was although it should've been....it's a classic

  • Saw Golden Earring and Robin Trower in Charlotte during Earring's Switch tour. I was 19 at the time, it was my first concert. Other than the great music I remember being deaf and high as a kite afterwards. Oh for the good old days!

  • @theDeckisStacked The drums are definitely taped. He's doing a great job faking, he's obviously a good drummer. But he also looks like he's not hitting too hard, and you can see he has a rubber practice pad/muffler on the snare drum. Yeah, disappointing, because a lot of these old clips really are live...

  • I dont remember the guitarist singing the chorus!

  • This isn't completely live. Look for the horns, second guitar and back-up vocals that aren't present in the video. I would say all of it but the vocals are synced. They just couldn't pull it off on TV like the record without extra instrumentation. Even the drums are on the track, but he does a good job of faking it.

  • @Tickbryan Yep, it's the recorded backing track with live lead vocals.

  • @Tickbryan Yeah, they definitely can't reproduce it live, lol. Here they are STILL crushing it live over 30 years later. Don't blame the band for the foibles and shit budget of music on TV back then.

  • he's like a luuded out Jagger!

  • Definitely a backing track with live overdubs - backing vocals, second guitar track etc. Still it's better than what kids get served today.

  • There was also "In Concert" if you remember.... This was pretty cool although it's not live they lip syched this song with some dubs & mixed in tracks but it's still cool....

  • lovely song.

  • Wow! People playing instruments - a drums, guitar - and actually singing. I'm loving this! Such a shame the days of talented people being promoted to the public are long over.

  • I always thought they were saying "red, hot love"...

  • Drummer has a Gladstone practice pad on his snare, which virtually silences drum. I'm sure they were playing in the tv studio (quietly), but what the tv audience heard was pre-recorded, apparently. All that said...

I miss real music being the mainstream.

  • Nope-u are wrong. This is a LIVE performance. Yes, that's a Gladstone pad on his snare-right next to a bullet microphone. He used the pad/mic combo to come up with that muffled snare sound-the one that gave this song it's "driving really fast at night" feel. My band played this song and it took us forever to figure out how to recreate that snare sound. I ended up using a banana skin! (there was no you tube back then). If I am not mistaken ALL of the Midnight Special Concerts were LIVE!

  • The Reality Showsof my era: Midnight Special...........Don Kirsherner's Rock Concert........ABC's In Concert......Night Flight.......etc

  • OMG I LOVE IT!!!!!

  • I can't believe I missed the 60s 70s and 80s

  • @bobwogan you are correct sir!....definitely hear those high vocals, when just the two are singing the chorus..and its not from the drummer or bass either....alittle surprised this was allowed...

  • This was my and 2nd ex wife's song, riding around in my 1974 CJ5 I still love this song, can't say that about her.

  • I LOVE this. Such memories. Sneaking into the house , stoned, trying to avoid the rents. But having to get home to watch Midnight Special. They had everyone on, live....

  • Barry Hay is fucking ridiculous. I love it.

  • What!! Live Music!?!?

  • Wish they would make a show featuring great talent from today's top groups and individuals great music still abounds keep on rocking.

  • BALLROOM BLITZ, ANYONE?

  • I am in the TV business. It was common back then, as it is nowadays for a band to play to a pre-recorded track when performing on live television. This is done for a variety of technical and timing reasons. The lead vocals are typically performed "live".

  • they cant perform live? good song tho. course im a serious RUSH fan just visiting

  • Where the heck is the slide guitar coming from? Vocals sound live but the rest?

  • shut it...UP

    lil richard brings it..

  • Comment removed

  • I am going to download this video and re-upload it, deleting Little Richard... he is just so QUEER!!! Fucks up the presentation...

  • Little Richard is really fucking high.

  • It's a shame that mtv moved away from the music just to be like any other tv show.

  • We have the equivalent of this already, but you retards are too ignorant to figure it out. Ever heard of the BBC? Jools Holland, bitches. Look it up.

  • one year before i was born:)

  • Hey MTV was good when it first came out ( I wouldn't watch it now) but your right todays music BLOWS ... LONG LIVE THE 70'S & 80'S :-)

  • I'm in love with the drums

  • one of the kewlest tracks ever, made me want to take up the bass when I was a kid.

  • lead singer Barry Hay is singing live, the rest of the band are playing to the record. it's obvious. too bad as Midnight Special usually presented ALL of the acts live.

  • @donedave Yeah, I caught this when I was trying to find out where the other guitar leads were coming from. Aside from that there horns and/or keyboards going on in the middle of the song. Too bad. Why would they not just preform it live?

  • gear yaaaaaaaaa what the hell? Why is he sounding stupid? Great song

  • That intro by Little Richard was just frikkn HILLARIOUS!!! LOVED it!!! 8^D

  • MTV does suck. Midnight Special was cool because back then good music shows were very limited. Don Kirshner's Rock Concert is the only other one I can think of.

  • @browsemusicvideos But good music shows are still very limited!

  • @browsemusicvideos There was also In Concert that was aired on abc

  • I dont care what anyone says, we had some great fuckin music back in the 70's. Jesus this song brings back memories of drivin back home after droppin the GF off after a nite after the Drive Inn. God those were great times.Great Bands, and great friends.

  • How on earth can there be 3 dislikes???

  • @LJW55 because their `radar' is messed up and they ended up in the `twilight zone' ?...lol....

  • Great song but one lousy performance of it......

  • something about this video was definitely off at 4:40 he is supposed to be playing lead but clearly is not. Then at the end the drummer is doing a dive yet is still playing. So yea there is something off... I still love Golden Earring tho

  • another great road trippin song

  • this is greatt - even with the backtrack....

  • 3 people are mentally retarded!

  • this is real music , far better than today's stuff.

  • With special guests, Igor the Invisible Slide Guitarist and Larry the Transparent Keyboard Guy!

  • OH THE UGLY PANTS THEY WORE BACK THEN! NEXT CAME PARACHUTE PANTS THEN RIPPED JEANS ON AND ON...LOL.....OBTW I LOVE THIS SONG TOO!

  • @skyfire62 AND WHAT thAt FUCK UR WEARING NOW? im naked if u want to know nigga

  • Can I have the Les Paul pleeeeaaaasssseeee?

  • Wow I Love the practice pad on the drummer's snare drum.

  • @frbugbee Damn..you're right! The vocals appear to be live though...??!

  • @frbugbee Damn you are right.

  • Ladies 'n gentlemen, that's is called a strong left hand hit...

  • The perfect driving up the highway song

  • wow - them some tight hot pants! :) awesome tune!

  • Video killed the radio star...you had to be there.

  • M is supposed to stand for MUSIC and there hasn't been much MUSIC in MTV for a long time.

  • I am too lazy to see if anyone else noticed this but, um, does anyone else notice that the dude on the right at 5:21-ish was the inspiration for Joan Jett's outfit on the cover of her "I Love Rock & Roll" album?

  • Classic

  • Together with Bat out of Hell, best car crash song of all time. My god, this is live. Barry is slecht bij stem, George klinkt als een (b)engeltje.

  • Yep!! It's still 5 star all the way!! :)

  • the dude has the gay ear pireced lmao

  • @mrlocojoe4173 what the hell is a gay ear?

  • @LifeSoulAz thats when you have just ur right ear done lmao

  • @mrlocojoe4173 they're Dutch and it was the seventies... I'm sure it meant something different.

  • Nice pants!

  • Best driving song of ALL TIME!!!

  • cool..bad ass drum solo, james bond guitar thing...

  • this band has stayed together all these years since they were teenagers, that's a rarity, check out the video of theirs "Dong Dong Diki Diki Dong" from 1969, they look like babies.

  • @tonlo92 Dong Dong Diki Diki Dong

thats in A Ministry song "Jesus Loved My Hotrod"

    didnt know that at all

    Thanks

  • not lip syncing. sounds like they're using a backing track.

  • 80's MTV was good now horse shit TV shows about nothing worth watching ,HEY does anyone remember on Friday night in the 70's there was a rock show on late night on ABC it had Calif. jam one and other rock groups on?

  • @pantyhse:

You´re not so right in this case, because British MTV between 1990-1996 was another case with one of the highlights "120 minutes" the best alternative music show i ever watched in my life - presented by Paul King (former lead singer of "King"+their world success in 1985 "Love and Pride").

MTV in general was wrecked by cynical stock market managers by VIACOM since1998 who turned it to silly dating show formats for hysterical girls with guys suffering it with "bearing grins".

  • @pantyhse There were a few shows on. Another weekly was called "In Concert" which was better than Midnight Special and much more so than that other Kirshner show.

  • I dont care if they lip sync, whatever - this was awesome! I wish I was there!!!!!!!

  • Lip Sync.. Look at the rubber practice pad on the snare. I have one just like it....from the 70's.

  • @crossafix this is live. Listen to the original recording.

  • @crossafix: i "wouldn´t have" noticed that this is lip sync....LOL....but Little Richard at the beginning is indispensable....people always complained about Boy George´s outfits but what is he wearing here in 1974 ?

  • Golden Earring is one of the greatest bands out there. George Kooymans is a amazing guitarist, also they put on one of the best live shows around. Real talented musicians. Also all original members still together since the mid 60's,how many bands can say that. George has to sing the chorus here because Barry Hay shredded his voice from the concert the night before. George is playing rythem live along with some licks, drums are partial live and bass I can't tell, rest is backing track

  • I remember going to see the babe and this song would come on... Sound turned up, windows down and my own personal karaoke.

  • MTV VH1 AND BET SUCK BIG TIME. A WASTE OF TIME . THEY ARENT MUSICIANS, ESPECIALLY THAT RAP CRAP.

  • Little Richard! Haha. Golden Earring was a great band. Very cool ending. They were not a one hit wonder they had two hits. This one in the 70's and Twilight Zone in the 80's.

  • @michellesupport89 Actually 3 hits ..."Bullet Hits The Bone" was a hit too.

  • @airshotsphotoco that song's called Twilight Zone.

  • Its called a backing track for a reason, some songs were too complicated to sound good live so they played it behind the band to fill in all the little bells and whistles ,OR its used for a band that just plain sucks live epsecially in a smaller venue where its hard having the fans so close nothing gets lost in the crowd,This no way a reference to Golden Earings ability to play live. They were one of the founding progressive bands around before it was nicknamed progressive rock.

  • I don't get it. Is this a partial playback? The drums are definitely not live (few extra sounds here and there, plus the obvious fact that the guy has a practice pad lying on the head) but the guitars and vocals seem to be.

Past that, I didn't realize this song was that old. I thought it was from the early to mid 80's.

  • mtv ruined the music industry, just imagine if the midnight special was on today it would be crap with the likes of lady gaga and bieber

  • Great driving song

  • This is a great driving song

  • I remember the later appearance as well. They did a great version of 'Grab It For A Second'. Loved the glowing golden earring that rimmed the drummer's bass drum on that show. Very cool. I loved the Midnight Special, lots of great live music on there. Today's rock, if you can find it, doesn't approach the bands of those days. Very good on their instruments, wrote great songs. Now, appearance and hype is everything. Also saw Be Bop Deluxe, Thin Lizzy, Cheap Trick, Cars and more on the MS.

  • The drummer in my band (a hot blond!) has been bugging us to work out an arrangement of this song. She loves the drum solo.

  • hier zingt george nog het refrein te gek

  • Golden Earring! One of my all time favorite rock bands.

  • There is nothing like Midnight Special, MTV when it first started, and I really don't see anything these days that can touch it. I really do miss it.

  • They were on here in 1978 too but I cannot find it on Youtube. They did Grab it for a second and they were on there with Cheap Trick, AC DC, Nugent, Aerosmith, and REO Speed Wagon.

  • yeah but if they brought this back today it wouldn't be the same because most hot acts now can't sing or play instruments they make it on their looks, having a kiddie show or scandals.

  • Awesome Drummer!!!!

  • Yeah, MTV sucks. Agreed. Used to not suck. Midnight Special only sucked when they'd try to make us think the performance wasn't pre-recorded by having the singer do his vocals live. This is not cool.

  • this is sadly missed, true musicians, trying to make it,rock and roll legends,BUBBA CROCKETT

  • Ha ha ha, where's the "horn" section on stage....lmao

  • @farfromarz who or what is playing guitar at 4:49/4:50 ?

  • @supergordon24fan George is playing rythem live to a recorded lead track and horn/organs. George is also singing most of the high lead because the singer shredded his voice

  • @tatethompson1234 hhmm i never even noticed on the high parts that the lead singer isn't really singing it as loud as the guitarist ...shreded his voice permanently ?

  • @supergordon24fan Golden Earring just got off a major US tour then they had todo this show after 3 shows in 4 nights so I read. Hes a great singer, they still tour alot and all original members still, also they are the longest band to stay all original in the netherlands, they started in the early 60's and been going strong since.

  • @farfromarz their playing half live and half to recorded backing track so it would sound the best

  • Comment removed

  • killer bass

  • put them in the rock hall

  • George is a great guitarist,way underated

  • lil richard loves golden earring

  • Comment removed

  • love this can`t get enough

  • Little Richard must have had a bad hair day damn man

  • Funny (and probably a big honor for them!), the way Little Richards announces the band, calling them Golden Earrings, which was their original name.

Barry Hay clearly shot his voice (intensive touring?) and George Kooymans sings most of his part. Only (part of) the vocals and guitar are live, btw.

  • Golden Earring rules!!!

  • Yes they certainly do.........................

  • Bring this Midnight Specail back and do away with MTV I will take this anytime and anyday over the crap today

  • You got that right MTV sucks....

  • @Zedsdead1968 Unfortunately they'd have to re-animate the dead to get enough talent to put on a show.

  • Comment removed

  • @clessa4 Too Bad, But True.... But they could do Band Reunions, too.....

  • @Zedsdead1968 Hell yeah!

  • @Zedsdead1968 Hmmm...two guitars, and one guitar player? Looks like live vocals over a playback!

  • @Zedsdead1968 Ditto bud..."crap" is spot on

  • @Zedsdead1968 Eh, not really. If they did Midnight Special today, it would inevitably get loaded up with all the "R&B" crap we have today. Shame, really. It's such a pleasure to hear real live music that isn't auto-tuned.

Thank Heavens we have YouTube and access to these vids.

  • @CheshireCatFun fuck rap man

  • @CheshireCatFun dude R&B means rhythm and blues we dont have that anymore and thats a shame

  • @nicholasomesfilms I thought the quotes around R&B suitably made the demarcation between the real Rhythm & Blues of old and what passes for "R&B" today, which has no real rhythm and no blues to speak of.

  • @Zedsdead1968 ...Mmm'...Your dead right there'....Bloody Crap nowadays'...These guys really did rock..!!

  • @Zedsdead1968 seriously... nice shirt little richard

  • @Zedsdead1968 Yes, we used to stay up for this and Don Kirshner's Rock concert
