Eight Track Blazing Radar Love As The Montana Blue Continental Races Down West Bound US #2 From Spokane...WSP Troopers In The Distant. Another Day In Traffic Court
Saw Golden Earring and Robin Trower in Charlotte during Earring's Switch tour. I was 19 at the time, it was my first concert. Other than the great music I remember being deaf and high as a kite afterwards. Oh for the good old days!
@theDeckisStacked The drums are definitely taped. He's doing a great job faking, he's obviously a good drummer. But he also looks like he's not hitting too hard, and you can see he has a rubber practice pad/muffler on the snare drum. Yeah, disappointing, because a lot of these old clips really are live...
This isn't completely live. Look for the horns, second guitar and back-up vocals that aren't present in the video. I would say all of it but the vocals are synced. They just couldn't pull it off on TV like the record without extra instrumentation. Even the drums are on the track, but he does a good job of faking it.
@Tickbryan Yeah, they definitely can't reproduce it live, lol. Here they are STILL crushing it live over 30 years later. Don't blame the band for the foibles and shit budget of music on TV back then.
There was also "In Concert" if you remember.... This was pretty cool although it's not live they lip syched this song with some dubs & mixed in tracks but it's still cool....
Wow! People playing instruments - a drums, guitar - and actually singing. I'm loving this! Such a shame the days of talented people being promoted to the public are long over.
Drummer has a Gladstone practice pad on his snare, which virtually silences drum. I'm sure they were playing in the tv studio (quietly), but what the tv audience heard was pre-recorded, apparently. All that said...
Nope-u are wrong. This is a LIVE performance. Yes, that's a Gladstone pad on his snare-right next to a bullet microphone. He used the pad/mic combo to come up with that muffled snare sound-the one that gave this song it's "driving really fast at night" feel. My band played this song and it took us forever to figure out how to recreate that snare sound. I ended up using a banana skin! (there was no you tube back then). If I am not mistaken ALL of the Midnight Special Concerts were LIVE!
@bobwogan you are correct sir!....definitely hear those high vocals, when just the two are singing the chorus..and its not from the drummer or bass either....alittle surprised this was allowed...
I LOVE this. Such memories. Sneaking into the house , stoned, trying to avoid the rents. But having to get home to watch Midnight Special. They had everyone on, live....
I am in the TV business. It was common back then, as it is nowadays for a band to play to a pre-recorded track when performing on live television. This is done for a variety of technical and timing reasons. The lead vocals are typically performed "live".
lead singer Barry Hay is singing live, the rest of the band are playing to the record. it's obvious. too bad as Midnight Special usually presented ALL of the acts live.
@donedave Yeah, I caught this when I was trying to find out where the other guitar leads were coming from. Aside from that there horns and/or keyboards going on in the middle of the song. Too bad. Why would they not just preform it live?
MTV does suck. Midnight Special was cool because back then good music shows were very limited. Don Kirshner's Rock Concert is the only other one I can think of.
I dont care what anyone says, we had some great fuckin music back in the 70's. Jesus this song brings back memories of drivin back home after droppin the GF off after a nite after the Drive Inn. God those were great times.Great Bands, and great friends.
something about this video was definitely off at 4:40 he is supposed to be playing lead but clearly is not. Then at the end the drummer is doing a dive yet is still playing. So yea there is something off... I still love Golden Earring tho
I am too lazy to see if anyone else noticed this but, um, does anyone else notice that the dude on the right at 5:21-ish was the inspiration for Joan Jett's outfit on the cover of her "I Love Rock & Roll" album?
this band has stayed together all these years since they were teenagers, that's a rarity, check out the video of theirs "Dong Dong Diki Diki Dong" from 1969, they look like babies.
80's MTV was good now horse shit TV shows about nothing worth watching ,HEY does anyone remember on Friday night in the 70's there was a rock show on late night on ABC it had Calif. jam one and other rock groups on?
You´re not so right in this case, because British MTV between 1990-1996 was another case with one of the highlights "120 minutes" the best alternative music show i ever watched in my life - presented by Paul King (former lead singer of "King"+their world success in 1985 "Love and Pride").
MTV in general was wrecked by cynical stock market managers by VIACOM since1998 who turned it to silly dating show formats for hysterical girls with guys suffering it with "bearing grins".
@pantyhse There were a few shows on. Another weekly was called "In Concert" which was better than Midnight Special and much more so than that other Kirshner show.
@crossafix: i "wouldn´t have" noticed that this is lip sync....LOL....but Little Richard at the beginning is indispensable....people always complained about Boy George´s outfits but what is he wearing here in 1974 ?
Golden Earring is one of the greatest bands out there. George Kooymans is a amazing guitarist, also they put on one of the best live shows around. Real talented musicians. Also all original members still together since the mid 60's,how many bands can say that. George has to sing the chorus here because Barry Hay shredded his voice from the concert the night before. George is playing rythem live along with some licks, drums are partial live and bass I can't tell, rest is backing track
Little Richard! Haha. Golden Earring was a great band. Very cool ending. They were not a one hit wonder they had two hits. This one in the 70's and Twilight Zone in the 80's.
Its called a backing track for a reason, some songs were too complicated to sound good live so they played it behind the band to fill in all the little bells and whistles ,OR its used for a band that just plain sucks live epsecially in a smaller venue where its hard having the fans so close nothing gets lost in the crowd,This no way a reference to Golden Earings ability to play live. They were one of the founding progressive bands around before it was nicknamed progressive rock.
I don't get it. Is this a partial playback? The drums are definitely not live (few extra sounds here and there, plus the obvious fact that the guy has a practice pad lying on the head) but the guitars and vocals seem to be.
Past that, I didn't realize this song was that old. I thought it was from the early to mid 80's.
I remember the later appearance as well. They did a great version of 'Grab It For A Second'. Loved the glowing golden earring that rimmed the drummer's bass drum on that show. Very cool. I loved the Midnight Special, lots of great live music on there. Today's rock, if you can find it, doesn't approach the bands of those days. Very good on their instruments, wrote great songs. Now, appearance and hype is everything. Also saw Be Bop Deluxe, Thin Lizzy, Cheap Trick, Cars and more on the MS.
They were on here in 1978 too but I cannot find it on Youtube. They did Grab it for a second and they were on there with Cheap Trick, AC DC, Nugent, Aerosmith, and REO Speed Wagon.
yeah but if they brought this back today it wouldn't be the same because most hot acts now can't sing or play instruments they make it on their looks, having a kiddie show or scandals.
Yeah, MTV sucks. Agreed. Used to not suck. Midnight Special only sucked when they'd try to make us think the performance wasn't pre-recorded by having the singer do his vocals live. This is not cool.
@supergordon24fan George is playing rythem live to a recorded lead track and horn/organs. George is also singing most of the high lead because the singer shredded his voice
@tatethompson1234 hhmm i never even noticed on the high parts that the lead singer isn't really singing it as loud as the guitarist ...shreded his voice permanently ?
@supergordon24fan Golden Earring just got off a major US tour then they had todo this show after 3 shows in 4 nights so I read. Hes a great singer, they still tour alot and all original members still, also they are the longest band to stay all original in the netherlands, they started in the early 60's and been going strong since.
@Zedsdead1968 Eh, not really. If they did Midnight Special today, it would inevitably get loaded up with all the "R&B" crap we have today. Shame, really. It's such a pleasure to hear real live music that isn't auto-tuned.
