James does have a little problem at the outset with his breathing but of course this isn't a song he sings on a regular basis, so to be expected. His guitar playing is exceptional and his voice that mellow tone. What you also need to listen out for is Jimmy Johnson's Base playing in the background - superb!!
Unlike so many comments, I love this! One of the magical characteristics of songs written by the mystical Leonard Cohen, I've found, is that no matter who sings it, or how, the song is a living thing.... an exquisite prayer that needs no religion ... it provides a connectedness ... this particular studio track is so humble but screams LOVE and DEVOTION (to my heart and ears anyway). I definitely go thumbs-up, 5-stars, and thanks to JT for providing this intimate glimpse into his heart.
The first time JT sang this song in public was at a concert in the summer of 2008 in Montreal -- where Leonard Cohen comes from. It was the last song played, JT coming back onto the stage with his guitar. Full house, last song, yet when we heard the first cord you could have heard a pin drop. Now that's class.
@BigBoiJC I could add a few more: his vocal tone, like unvarnished timber, curled and cured in shipwright's yard; the subtle vocal embellishments that fall like shavings of cedar onto a caressing bottom sound; a minimlist guitar style that belies a lifetime of execution; and finally, an ability to reach into the heart of a great ballad to find it ts mystical qualities.
@kingfisher44 i've heard nick cave and he is no treat to the ears for me. btw.....the breathing ccomment...only a total FOOL would say "the breathing is all wrong" there's no set rule on taking a breathe.
Like Neil Diamond, he omits the chorus between the first two verses.
Unlike ND, he does not begin the third verse with the first two lines from the first, and unlike ND he ends with the chorus. At least he's covering the original and not ND's cover.
Off to listen to Nina Simone's version! Neither ND's nor JT's matches the original so far, but then neither ND nor JT actually knew Suzanne. (Neither do I, BTW).
I want to travel with him and I want to travel blind. I will lead him by the water and I will wear rags and feathers from Salvation Army Counters... heros in the seaweed... leaning out for love. Thks Leonard, and thanks Baby James
leonard cohen rules and is one of the best poets ever ... but i think james taylor has the perfect voice for this. i like this cover more than the original. everyone stop whining . james taylor kept true to it.
Almost anybody sings Suzanne better than Leonard Cohen. Just because he wrote it doesn't mean he can do justice to the song. Cohen, in my opinion, is tone deaf.
Spectacular...almost spiritual. James at his finest, so subtle, beautifully presented in every way. His has a way of putting his own stamp on great tunes and covering in that rare way that results in a version every bit as good as the original...and often better. Quite a gift. Aren't we lucky to experience it? I think I'll watch it again...
i love this song, beautiful lyric-writing by leonard cohen... plus i've been attached to 'fire and rain' since i was young, so its cool that its james taylor covering it
I love James Taylor

Suzanne... his first love that has never died, and all the wives since have had to live with her. What's a soul to do?

One of my favorite JT songs. It's trance-like. Even though he didn't write it, he occupies it. You know that there was a "Suzanne" in his life.

Yeah, a little breathy early but really, who cares. A wonderful song, sung beautifully (the best version by far) and better here than on the CD.

@mariegau He can tame thousands with just four things (besides himself): A stool, a guitar, a mic, and a sound system.

why do all his songs have to sound the same? and why can't even his cover versions differ from that rule?

Great, exact the same intro as in 'Caroline I See You' and that feels a bit poor.
