It's kinda sad that Evelyn Glennie is deaf. She cannot hear the wonderful music that she is playing. But she indeed is one of the best marimbaists ever.
Glennie has been profoundly deaf since age 12. This does not inhibit her ability to perform at the international level. She regularly plays barefoot for both live performances and studio recordings, better to "feel" the music. She contends that deafness is largely misunderstood by the public. She claims to have taught herself to hear with parts of her body other than her ears. AMAZING!!!
I didn't understand either. She can only hear sounds louder than 190 decibels. A jet engine registers at about 140 decibels. So it's pretty safe to say she's rather deaf. I think she says she "hears" by feeling vibrations.
YES! I just noticed that after reading your comment. The best I can discern is that it either 1) Helps with making the rhythms speak clearly or 2) is an attempt to keep her hands from falling off by the end of the performance, basically by evenly distributing things? Your guess is as good as mine.
hard to imagine those puny little wooden sticks are not cracked or bent by the end of the performance. and lawwl 80's hair, i bet she can hear extra more betterer because of the massive hair vibrating on her skull.
May be she as great solo performer... but ensamble on this video not best ( she as playing alone and orchestra plaing not together with her) its not professionaly !
Deaf is an exaggeration... more slightly hard of hearing.

hard to feel sorry for her deafness when she cheated on her husband and humiliated him publicly the way she did
