To realize how quickly conditions can deteriorate during wartime, I can advise to search for informations about "the Minnesota starvation experience" and to look how much weight the experimented men lost in a "starvation" condition of 1,600 calories a day during 24 weeks. If you add typhus and a diet much lower than 1,600 calories a day (because of the Allied bombings of German communications), the scenes seen in the nazi camps are not surprising at all... ;-)
