nice. i have a portacolor that is from i think either 1968 or 1974 but it works still beautiful. suprisingly i found out they made these sets untill atleast 1980 because of the cost and they were all tubes minus 1 transistor in the uhf tuner. keep it looking nice. though it uses compactrons(last attempt to use tubes in mass produced goods) its still a tube set:)
@Tonklimak maybe it was me...see my page for MY porta-color...it's for sale! 1st 100.00 takes it! ALL original...MINT & works like NEW! I'm MOVING on the 3rd, though, so if u want it, I need to hear from you ASAP! :)
I had one of these.when i was a kid the inside had to have a few tubes to replace.but get the tubes it needed and got it to work.but traded for a different tv.
Very nice! Does it use the large capacitors inside like most older TV's do (or all of them)?? I know a place to get the capacitors replaced-- they're about to need it.
Nice!! The oldest one I haev is a 1986 Quasar, not very vintage but still neat. Plays my Atari great. Do you have an Atari that's newer to go with it?? I have to ask:)
Why is it that these old tube tvs has such a nicer, more fuller color picture than todays modern LCD/Plasma/HDTVs? I was born in 1969, so I grew up in the 1970s-80s watching alot of tv shows, movies and cartoons on the family 25 inch color tv with wooden console (I have long since forgotten the brand name of the set). As a result, I may be biased towards those old tube tvs due to my nostalgia, but judging them by these kind of youtube videos, they have an oh so nice picture.
this coming from someone born in the 90s, id rather watch on a tube set any day than an hdtv. people whine too much about picture quality and "definition" these days but howabout reliability?
back in the 60s, things were made in America and made to last. And they were GOOD LOOKING. That is, products had nice, contemporary styling. Look at the crap that comes from china these days in comparison. The stuff doesnt last, its got very ugly styling, and is all plastic shit.
That's a beautiful 1968 color tv. I remember seeing advertisements for GE Portacolor sets in magazines back in '68. The design is very clean and way better looking than the junky looking televisions on the market today.
Quite a find. I "inherited" 7 of the sets (various configurations) including a 1966 original "H" chassis.from a local repair shop when they closed in 1983. They considered them junk, but when repaired, aligned and slightly modified they are very good. Shortcomings are Cheap capacitors and the early sets had a wax covered flyback that required a closed HV box which led to overheating. Later runs had fireproof FB and no door on HV box. Only one vid stage (11bt11) which has to be strong for contrast
Cool. I know exactly where that TV was made. I saw the Portsmouth address on the return card. Back in high school, I had a friend who's dad worked there making TV's They stopped making TV's there in the mid 80's but GE still owns the pant. My friends dad lost his job when they shut down but he went into business for himself and was OK. I don't know what GE does with the plant these days.
I'm going to need another comment window as that cable box brings back such memories. Anything connected to equipment I really can remember well. The song I heard playing was "Giving you the best" by Anita Baker and the cable service was TCI in Pittsburgh (their house was in Green Tree Borough)
And I know what you mean about the smell too of the tubes, particiularly when it's not an old nicotine odor but brand new tubes.
Oh yes, mint in the BOX! That picture is just beautiful. I have this same model, not quite as good of shape though! I will make sure and do a video of mine soon but it's going to need repair to the power supply. That cable box is totally awesome. I remember going to my grandparents house on my dad's side in about 1986 and they had this same box hooked to an RCA CTC-71 set. I tuned into the community information channel and can still remember the song that was playing.
So cool. :)

Do these old TV's have any value? Even if NIB, how much can they be worth? Just curious.

Nice!! I hope that TV lasts for years!
eskiewolf76 2 years ago
@eskiewolf76 It has been in the box since I've moved 2 years ago.
I will keep it mint. Though I will take it out and power it up once every so often to keep the original capacitors formed.

Thats a nice TV!
Does it have composite video input?
Jonhny2 2 years ago
No it doesn't.
Just 300 ohm twin lead inputs for VHF and UHF.

That'd be a great 1968 movie prop.

Awesome TV. I would looooove to have a Mint in the box electronic device from that long ago.
In the video it looks as if it needs to be degaussed.
Trance88 3 years ago
It did need degaussed.
This TV has a manual degauss button on the rear of the set. It is not automatic. I forgot to do it when I made the video.

Also, where do you get all this awesome mint in the box stuff?
Also, if this was uploaded today, why didn't it show up in my subscriptions section? I saw that retrochad rated this, it was under "friend activity".
wilkes85 3 years ago
So far I've been lucky and all of this mint in the box stuff I've gotten off Ebay.
I love the graphics on the box!
Not sure why it never showed up in your subs...
