@alohachristine its not, it doesnt matter wether you do or dont, only when you are cutting more than one at a time then you should, but it doesnt matter if its one piece which most of the time it is
@alohachristine If you bring the blade back up when it's still spinning you are likely to lower the quality of the cut as the blade catches parts on the way up and risk injury if it really catches the wood that's not supported at all.

I wonder why you did not demonstrate to use holddown fasterners. If the piece was ripped, your fingers or palm may be parted.
