An excellent example of how interesting, involved & compelling Larry Colmus as a race caller was at Suffolk Downs, in that era.
Only in the ensuing years would the boredom of the Monmouth grind reduce him to a cliché-enunciating robot:
"Welcome to Monmouth Park... Welcome to Monmouth Park... Welcome to Monmouth Park... Welcome to Monmouth Park... Welcome to Monmouth Park...”
ALL day long…yeeeeecccchhh!

This was an extreme pleasure being part of this FOX Sports Net telecast as a production assistant; Everybody was a real pro to work for. What a great race indeed that went right down to the wire. Thanks to all who made it possible!

Running Stag looked very awkward in his action in the wrong lead in midstretch...I think Shane Sellers was a poor jockey selection for this horse.

The trainer of Running Stag actually got a better ovation from the fans than the winning trainer!
Read T.D. Thorton's Not By A Long Shot (2007).

@7855waldo great book...reading it currently
@ivy7496 - Glad you like it – splendidly written, it is.
God Bless Jorge Chavez, by the way.
When you’re done with that, try “Drink To The Lasses,” by Mary Beth Ellis, who’s been writing hilarious satires about the Triple Crown Races.
Hook up with her site, “Blond Champagne.” You can buy it directly from there, instead of forking over the inflated prices on Amazon.com Books.

@7855waldo (Continued)
Incidentally, I’ve had some luck with Running Stag’s babes at the race track. Stamina-character seems to be in their DNA.
@7855waldo Thanks for the recommendation! I will look up Ms. Ellis.
exciting finish!
