Here is a nice trick l use when l do that, keep it away from your tounge, chew fast but don't chew alot like 3 minimum and 5-6 maximum then swallow fast, but don't rest, because it lets the wasabi settle in....and if you wanna know why l know this.....I'm japanese.....

Wasabi is not an equivilent to horseradish. Even in Japan it is hard to find 'real' wasabi that is not imitation loaded with horseradish 'filler'.

Besides armoracia rusticana and eutrema wasabi only share the mustard family, nothing more.

The strength of wasabi isn't consistent. I can eat whole gunks of it in certain sushi restaurants in America, but eaten a smidgen of it fresh from the waterfalls in Shizuoka does way more damage. Most Americans don't know the strength of real, fresh wasabi.

Most wasabi in America, and even in Japan, is actually fake wasabi, an imitation made by mustard, horse radish, etc. They use added colors to make it green, too, so that wasabi that was easy to take was probably just imitation wasabi as well. Real wasabi's pretty expensive.
