This is excellent advice. My sister's computer had a VERY nasty virus. Whenever the computer went into XP the monster took over. I went into safe mode, did a system restore which got rid of it and then loaded some serious anti virus software. Job done.

@lego6789 It just removes all of your files, and reloads the ones that the computer came with, so that it will seem as though you just bought the computer, and it wasn't even used.

Just reinstall your "Operating System" disk (XP Reinstallation CD). That does the trick. It happened to me last night too for the first time and I put the disk in to "repair XP" and it worked.

for all those people who don't know, SOUND DOES NOT WORK IN SAFE MODE. What safe mode does is it loads up the extreme basic components needed to start your windows. Things like the keyboard, mouse, etc. Since sound is not a necessity, it does not load sound.

then for that kind of virus you need a recovery disk. they normally come with your pc but if u lost it then u can buy it just make sure that the recovery disk you buy is exactly right for your pc
