I can still recall the very first time I heard this song somewhere in the 70's. It was the early hours of the morning when I was driving from Oregon to Nevada. Art Garfunkel was the artist and I always considered his version to be the best until I heard Johnny.
Magnificant......i was blessed to catch his performance on PBS last nite...love this version..Gil..u r remarkable..wat a talent u both are....i couldnt get enough of this song..watched the video over and over....Johnny you are simply getting better...continue to bless us with your incredible voice....wat a God given talent..amazing..totally AWESOME!!!!
This song is SO COOL! 99 miles from L..A.........I LOVE when I'm only 99 miles from Los Angeles as I LOVE L.A. ! Reminds me of trips to Los Angeles this song! CLASSIC Mathis!
Royallas: I assume the road sign is still up? I haven't seen it in 30 years, but also always enjoyed seeing it. And this song brings back memories, some happy, some bittersweet.
I just posted a text on this song from the Merv Griffin show in '82. This is the version where I first fell in love with this song and I am grateful to find this on YouTube. Well done Johnny Mathis. You are indeed a treasure and I appreciate your musical gift very much.Thank you,for you!
I'm not a huge Johnny Mathis fan, but when I caught this special on TV and heard this song, I thought it was an absolute masterpiece. M y only negative comment is, who the hell put on Johnny's makeup before he came on stage?? Jeeeez, he looks like a ghost. Anyway, great post either way.
Albert Hammond was only a co-writer. The great Hal David co-wrote this song with Hammond. If Hal David isn't a familiar name, please look him up---you'll be surprised at all the songs he's written that I'm sure you'll know.
It is a matter of personal taste but Johnny Mathis' version is my favorite.
My husband and I and our son, went to Johnny Mathis' concert in Las Vegas, in 2006, for our 52nd anniversary. It was his 50th anniversary. We have been to many of his concerts, and they are always wonderful. His long-time guitarist is Gil Reigers. He was in the movie, "Yours, Mine, and Ours," with Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda, as the 2nd oldest teenager. He carried his guitar around in that movie, too!
one of the best singers of all times..no gimmicks-studio hypes. this is how it used to be "back in the day".. and by the way he is in his 70's..is this talent or what? not to mention the guitar..great!
fantastic, as aways, i love every note
