This is actually the most placid John Lydon I have ever seen. Normally no one will manage to get any sense out of the fukker. Somehow Tom Snydon appears to completely disarm him!!!
Tom Snyder is a moron. and doesn't seem to have ever encountered British humor. And not open to letting his guests reveal themselves. Trying to get a limited narrow response from someone like JOhn Lydon. idiot. It could have been so much more interesting. "I'm sure it could be," John says. hilarious!
Just a few quick questions... did these guys ever end up doing a soundtrack for a major Hollywood movie and did they ever make thier own film in England? I can't really find much of anything. The closest I could find is the movie "Order of Death" and the song of the same name used on "Miami Vice".
Also does anyone know any specifics behind "Carter not being able to land his boat"? He was in Venice sometime in 1980 but I've never heard of this incident.
Snyder doesn't get the fact that Johnny doesn't like to label music, I mean I have a lot of respect for Snyder. But Tom fails to look outside of his own views in this video.
Back in high school all these scrawny little white punks used to go around saying "anarchy dude"and spray painting the symbol everywhere. I always said if we really had anarchy they would be the first ones to get beat down by all the blacks and rednecks !
And, some rockers did commercials because they needed money for thier next album. Johnny did it, so what. He did a commercial so then he could make an album the way HE wanted to do it. Lou Reed did a scooter commercial, so he could do an album as he wanted. Selling out is compromising the work of an album, in essence letting the studio do it. NOT just doing a commercial. I couldn't care if he did a butter commercial. Just play the music!
@JackM2409 When I was younger, I was just getting into Lou Reed and heard his "Velvet..." stuff on MTV. When I saw him on the scooter commercial....and the wild side music played, and he said "don't settle for walkin" I was so in awe of him...as I still am.
I have always appreciated Johns work in the past, and in the present. I know its hard for most people to get along with him, because he exhibits views that are misanthropic. Some of us do. He hates the status quo, and hypocrisy. So, most people think he's an asshole. Whatever. But Tom Snyder is a raging alcoholic. He drinks just before interviews and then he gets mean. Expecially if you're young, and different. Tom Snyder was the status quo's uglier side.
1:41 "It doesn't need a bracket, a category, or any of those things." This is like those wanker bands who, when asked what genre of music they play, insist that they won't say because they don't want their music to be pigeonholed, as if their music somehow transcends genres. Lydon's just being pretentious, just like other entertainers have before and after him.
@zzzzzzozz the only reason he sold butter was to pay for the PiL tour...... he was never involved in a music managment company, that's why he says they're corrupt, thus he was always struggling for money and needed somewhere to get money for a tour. how the fuck is that selling out?
I'm not even that big of a Sex Pistols or PIL fan, and I do think Johnny Rotten is kind of a dick, but his basic message is great here. Rock n Roll IS too structured, and IS too often associated with labels rather than creativity and humanity.
@chillepalmerz hes trying to be a dick thought thats the funny thing hes a punk us punks keep people pissed, ex. the whole reason im replying is to piss you off and bug you
@chillepalmerz But you are forgetting unless the members of a band are already rich, someone has to pay the bills, its called life. I think Tom is great.
@chillepalmerz He's a total dick but he's also has lots of redeeming features and he's always interesting and thought provocative unlike the irretrievably stupid Tom Snyder.
Tom Snyder was smart, literate, and very well prepared for his shows. Lydon is also smart, but he made the fool's mistake of thinking Snyder was as dumb as he looked.
It would have been hilarious to see Lydon in a panel discussion with real thoughtful musicians, like Weller and Strummer. They'd thoughtfully talk about their craft and he'd sit there with his thumb up his butt trying to get attention by acting petulant.
@mvonwahlde You may have a point here, but I'd like to see it another way: This appearance by both Lydon and Levene was a show, put up to create a public image (there's my sound bite...) of PIL. Keith Levene as being the depressive yet creative kind of guitarist and Lydon as being the obstreperous, cheeky and indifferent band leader. And Tom Snyder totally fell for that. That's the way I'd see it, what do you think?
@WhenWorldsCollide91 While I'm not sure about Snyder "falling" for anything (he'd seen an awful lot by then and he didn't have many alternatives other than to sit there and play the hand he was dealt), I agree with the remainder of your post. I don't see Lydon as particularly thoughtful as an artist, though. As an entrepreneur, though, he's very good.
Am I the only one that thought lydon was completly full of shit and up his own arse? I feel sorry for the interviewer...if they actually stood for anything they certainly aren't capable of articulating it.
@TheBlackWelshman that "approach" is standing for something you twit. You can't me that militant and say it's for no reason because that just makes him a massive cunt, juvenile or both.
@sacredgeometry standing for nothing is not standing for something, nothing is the absence of something but i won't have a silly argument, if you don't like the guy then why are you watching the interview and bitching about it boo-fuckin-hoo, happy new year
@TheBlackWelshman Its still a stance. I don't dislike him, i've never met the guy. I'm just saying his attitude was puerile and completely promoting the kind of bullshit he was against promoting. Punk meant jack shit unfortunately, it was just another group of angsty teens finding a way to counter this disgusting mainstream culture we have created for ourselves.
Segregation is never the answer which is exactly what most people did to themselves with this kind of stupid attitude.
John likes to challenge people. He's a tough interview. He makes good points, he just has a different approach in making them. It's obvious Tom was frustrated by not getting the answers he wanted, but I think he could have handled it better by preparing more.
and to imagine that many years later they sold out to "GUITAR HERO"! so much for the bad boy in them dont ya think? i guess the company eventually needed some money. pretty funny when you think about "now" vs this little "show" they performed with snyder back then. these guys made very cool music but in their day but
@DuLeth91 Letterman would have called them out on their little childish "above it all" attitude. dont get me wrong i still like the band but they were stupid on the Snyder show. now to see rotten on just about every ding dong show...he looks silly to me.
@formattester6 I agree with you on that. I would like to have seen this interview in the 80's with Letterman interviewing, because, like you said, he would have called them out, but at this time in his life, Lydon was pretty hard to mess with, and I think one of them would've walked off had the interview happened.
@DuLeth91 i agree that they wouldnt have stood for it if letterman had done and interview and called them out on their prickiness. would have been cool to see though. most people were intimidated by these guys when it came to an interview in those days. now howard stern would have been an interesting interviewer! its hard to say who would have been more raw.
Yeah, great how Snyder played right into Johnny's little play there. Rotten and Keith were going on and on with their nonsense and instead of letting them do the lifting and enjoying the cir he keeps acting like a sarcastic jerk off. Embarrassing.
@MillyVanillification he's being sarcastic when he says they're a company.... he's trying to show that companies are corrupt, as most are. they were just trying to expand rock and roll. punk was the death of the hippies
@jokamachi i don't understand how you can say he hasn't done anything.... Johnny Rotten was the progenitor of punk in the UK. let's see you do something like that......
music should be about whether you like it or not, whether it sounds good to you. it shouldn't be about what genre it is, who's playing it, what they look like or what their motives are. this applies more than ever with the bullshit disney factory produced 'music' with no real soul going into it. johnny, you're fucking right. even if you are sort of being a twat about it.
"Company" my ass. C'mon John. You play music in a band. Your statements don't make you dark, mysterious and deep. Why don't you just say you are a company AND a band. Holy shit. ALL bands are! They are there to make money AND music. I've always liked his music but his attitude is utter shit. He does not stand out as far as he may think. Maybe they should do an interview between Johnny and Jello Biafra. Now Jello is a man with plenty to say that actually MEANS something!
@zzzzzzozz Ehm..He always has been obnoxious, rude and self absorbed..and YOU just don't get the point He never said anything about sell outs.. In this interview he states that his band is a COMPANY. Do you even know what that means? He IS being honest to you.... So if anyone is qualified to do butter commercials..It's Lydon.
sex pistols were great but this guy is ridiculous. he uses his little band to get in the spotlight and then acts like a total weirdo and bad mouths everything. he tries to be all badass but looks more like a toddler throwing a tantrum. he's lucky to even be selling butter with that attitude.
"Not a packaged image"...LOLOLOL. Pil, music for the clueless...led by the biggest ripoff of all. At least SID was real in his ignorance. Johnny is consistently ignorant within his psuedo-intellectuality. An inside joke in New York was that interviewers pre-rimmed Johnny's drinking cups with Jewish dong...LOL That's why they all smiled when he took the first sip.
you could cut the atmosphere with a knife. I don;t think Lydon had a clue what he wanted back then. I get a feeling he was pissed off with everything, the media often spews out bad news and it affects people, overwhelms them to the point where we really don;t know how to get out of it. Of course throw in some bravado for good measure
@PresidentGackt being punk? John hates punk and has said so many times. He can actually be okay in interviews so long as he doesn't see the interviewers as being patronizing. I must admit, I understand that mindset. It has to be so frustrating doing the same interview every day but with different people.
@FreakBoi2008 I reckon the frustration is the fact that these categories e.g punk etc exists. He just wants his music to be appreciated at a deeper level not for its outward shell. The sex pistols following is ridiculous but following because it was cool and because these where figures that stood out in media totelley wrong reason. i would be pissed to. The cure dissociate themselves with Goth
he is promoting them on his show. He may have known the bands backgorund, but was giving them the opportunity to let the people hear about them. This is typical Johnny being a snot, as he says. Attacking Tom from here makes no sense.
I love the look on Keith Levene's face. He looks completely stoned.
I think the best part is when Tom finally sarcastically tells Johnny that it's "Unfortunate we're all out of step with you. Too bad". Tom saw through Lydon's bullshit. It's too bad there aren't more talk show hosts like him today.
Tom Snyder was a twat. A piece of the sick machinery that still exists today. If you're doing anything different from the mainstream, you're not one of us.
@katich5 Yeah... I watched both... thought the two were a royal pain in the ass. I'd likely not give Johnny 1 min of my time... arrogant little weasel.
the blond guy had the most interesting expretion on his face, particularly when the guy asked 'what do you like?'. He seemed to really be thinking about it, I wish he told us what he liked....Pizza prehaps?
since part 1 I get the feeling that in the break some one told him to 'pack it in and find his manners or he'll be embrassed on national tv and told to leave'. you can see it in comments like "can I have a cigaret again please, this won't cause a argument then?' or 'you had a tantram as I like to call it'.
As much of a fan of the Sex Pistols that I am, I think Lydon is a narcissistic douche bag and LIMITED as far as talent goes. Woman beater, little man, piece of shit.
Who are you replying too? "way to take that woman case out of contexts" it's "context" but anyways google search it like someone said, the guy was like 53 & punched a woman in the face because he didn't like his hotel room? I've read his biography & how he says "words are my weapons" blah & he doesn't "fight" ya anyone that can beat is arse back he has to go around beating on women? I'm really losing all respect for him.
maybe thats why he wants the fans to treat him like another person and not a music god so i dont think john or anyone else really gives a shit how you feel or who you have respect for
@hillelslovakrip um ya well obviously YOU do give a shit what I think & who I have respect for because YOU are the only one that replied to my comment made a week ago, hypocryte..
how does that make me a hypocryte im sorry im the only one that calls you out when your making an ass of yourself some one needs to shut you up when you talk like a fucking cunt i really dont give a shit how you feel but when you put your dumbass opinion on the internet ill call you out on it fuck you and goodbye douche bag
Once again proves my point that you are the only one that cares replying back to me AGAIN don't come back at me spewing profanity just to make up for your inadequate penis size loser get lost all ready (see if you can get an implant) don't take it out on me man.
i think what he ment was a band on a local level but stripped to just pure enjoyment of performance or he just could be prolonging his money streams.a local hometown band?but at as a national image level. but touring in a van is not comfortable..
John is so right about Rock and Roll. Most of the most famous rock songs are 12 bar blues or a very short takeoff from that format. You know 12 bar blues is fun to play with your friends when you're just screwing around but it really amazes me how much money some people make from just playing that and looking tough and people act like it's all new. I also don't like how people put everything in the rock and roll genre. I like Radiohead and Floyd but people put them in the same genre as shit.
Pretty naive of Lydon to think that one band could annihilate the rock 'n' roll industry and arrogant of him to blame the public for not "getting it." Fortunately, Lydon seems to have lightened up since then, found a sense of humour, and doesn't take himself so seriously!
I can appreciate that john and keith obviously believe in there own opinions but there just damn right rude and arent nice people. Someone asks a simple enough question and they cant answer it without being wankers

what movie is John Lydon talking about?

compare this with snyder's clash interview and tell me which was more entertaining?
kudos to both of them. 2 ppl from different generations on totally different wave lengths going at it hammer and tongs.
loved it.

Xcorgi 1 year ago
@zzzzzzozz Ehm..He always has been obnoxious, rude and self absorbed..and YOU just don't get the point He never said anything about sell outs.. In this interview he states that his band is a COMPANY. Do you even know what that means? He IS being honest to you.... So if anyone is qualified to do butter commercials..It's Lydon.
Oh and by the way...what do you do for money?

jamesbullet55 1 year ago 2
sex pistols were great but this guy is ridiculous. he uses his little band to get in the spotlight and then acts like a total weirdo and bad mouths everything. he tries to be all badass but looks more like a toddler throwing a tantrum. he's lucky to even be selling butter with that attitude.

"I only know what I DON'T like": that's 'philosophizing with a hammer', as Nietzsche put it (the philosopher who invented punk).
sartrekk 1 year ago
Snyder and Lydon didn't understand each other, but John was clearly the most rude of the two.
Also, Snyder didn't appear that pissed off at all. Lydon was clearly more angry and hostile.

Lydon's acting like a freakin' idiot. Being punk doesn't mean being rude for no reason.
PresidentGackt 1 year ago 2
@PresidentGackt being punk? John hates punk and has said so many times. He can actually be okay in interviews so long as he doesn't see the interviewers as being patronizing. I must admit, I understand that mindset. It has to be so frustrating doing the same interview every day but with different people.
FreakBoi2008 1 year ago
@FreakBoi2008 I reckon the frustration is the fact that these categories e.g punk etc exists. He just wants his music to be appreciated at a deeper level not for its outward shell. The sex pistols following is ridiculous but following because it was cool and because these where figures that stood out in media totelley wrong reason. i would be pissed to. The cure dissociate themselves with Goth

he is promoting them on his show. He may have known the bands backgorund, but was giving them the opportunity to let the people hear about them. This is typical Johnny being a snot, as he says. Attacking Tom from here makes no sense.

Thebibs 1 year ago 3
Honestly Keith looks so uncomfortable here ..
how he tells Snyder "I'm an easy going chap" while John is
blasting away lol.
and his reply to Snyders comment at the end "One of the most interesting
moments of my life". Keith: "I'm sure it could be".
I don't think he was agreeing with John in this interview, just seems
he wants to have a decent convo with the interviewer. Just how I see it.

On the latest Kimmel clip Lydon actually said when he went back on show later he liked Tom Snyder.
punkit743 1 year ago
I love the look on Keith Levene's face. He looks completely stoned.
I think the best part is when Tom finally sarcastically tells Johnny that it's "Unfortunate we're all out of step with you. Too bad". Tom saw through Lydon's bullshit. It's too bad there aren't more talk show hosts like him today.

since part 1 I get the feeling that in the break some one told him to 'pack it in and find his manners or he'll be embrassed on national tv and told to leave'. you can see it in comments like "can I have a cigaret again please, this won't cause a argument then?' or 'you had a tantram as I like to call it'.
65nerak 1 year ago
As much of a fan of the Sex Pistols that I am, I think Lydon is a narcissistic douche bag and LIMITED as far as talent goes. Woman beater, little man, piece of shit.

Who are you replying too? "way to take that woman case out of contexts" it's "context" but anyways google search it like someone said, the guy was like 53 & punched a woman in the face because he didn't like his hotel room? I've read his biography & how he says "words are my weapons" blah & he doesn't "fight" ya anyone that can beat is arse back he has to go around beating on women? I'm really losing all respect for him.

PBANDSNOW 2 years ago
Pretty naive of Lydon to think that one band could annihilate the rock 'n' roll industry and arrogant of him to blame the public for not "getting it." Fortunately, Lydon seems to have lightened up since then, found a sense of humour, and doesn't take himself so seriously!
gorillabelly1 2 years ago
This is all calculation. No different than when Lydon was in the Pistols. It's all about a reaction.
