So one day, Peter Buck got bored and decided to write the dumbest guitar riff he could. Michael Stipe heard it, and decide to write the dumbest lyrics he could write. They put them together, thought it was funny, named the song "Stand," and put it on their next album.

They weren't too happy when the record company decided to release it as a single.

They were kind of pissed when it became their biggest hit at the time. Probably made them appreciate "Losing My Religion" more. :-)

Actually Peter Buck later said that "Stand" is the stupidest song they'd ever written, and apparently they put it on Green as a time-filler! Just shows you what happens when you think back and put things into perspective. There are probably many other stupid hit songs out there that people love, lol! I happen to love this one :)

I think they do appreciate "REligion" a lot; they actually do divide their career into "Pre-Losing My Religion" and "Post-Losing My Religion"

Wasn't this the theme song to a sitcom starring Chris Peterson who played the part of a 31 year old paper boy who lived with his parents, rode an old Schwin two wheeler and lived net to his best friend who was married? As I recall it, the last few shows got quite bizarre. This one on Fox channel - 5 in our area.

Also looks like the dancers in the video were doing a middle 60s dance called the "Monkey."
