There's really not much of a purpose at all. You just get a set of everyday tasks each day to complete the way you want to. You can go through the game as a psycho (like me :P) or you can go through as a pacifist, without killing a single person (which is pretty hard to do for some tasks).

I might go through the game again in the future as a pacifist. It's pretty challenging.
